BunnyB - 2007-12-02 4:38 PM I have no idea what you're talking about, Cat. Smileys? Me? Helllllllo fellow Reindeer! My name is Melissa and I live in sunny southern California. I'm a bit late joining the party because I just got back from vacation. I'm new to the tri world, but hope to do my first event in either late 2008 season or early 2009. My goal for this challenge is 4 hours in the pool. I've just recently started swimming again, so I went for time instead of yardage since I'm still working on the basics. Beth - it's great to be on your team, girlfriend!!

Welcome Melissa!  Warning: These team threads can become HIGHLY addictive.  We take no responsibility for addictive behavior.

Happy swimming...

Addictive?????

I'm sure I have NO idea what you are talking about - LOLOL

    KathyG - 2007-12-02 6:00 PM

I learned a lot a the CAAN Sports clinic today. First I understand how all aspects of swimming interacts and doing one thing wrong/right makes a huge difference on other aspects of my stroke. Secondly so much of what I learned from TI (total immersion) is wrong to being able to swim fast so I have many bad habits to relearn.

Here are the key points that I need to work on (ie mostly everything)

    1. My head position needs to be looking down BUT forward so water is near my eyebrows/forehead. TI taught me to look straight down. This causes huge issue with breathing current way when I turn to breath often my mouth is underwater. Head down but looking forward makes me a upside down V like any type of boat designed for speed vs.straight down more water is displaced and I'm slower.

    2. Correct head position allows me to breath much easier and what I need to get is to sort of move my mouth to catch air..much smaller movement than old way.

    3. Next need to in recovery keep elbow high and as my elbow moves forward keep arm pit open..doing this keeps me on my side and again displaces less water and I'm narrower in the water.

    4. Hand needs to drive forward and aim 6-8" down below the surface which actually starts the rotation to the other side and gets my other arm in the proper recovery position and on my side ie more narrow.

    5. Need to work at extending my legs from my hip and kicking from my feet/ankles which helps all the above body position.

I have a DVD of dry land drills to do so I can try and retrain my brain/nerves to move properly and it also has the water drills.

Step one to improve and get technique right is understand what it should be. I have that now I think now learning to do it. As we swam I could feel when I did some things right and also wrong. Awareness of my body position and what feels wrong/right is key. Good thing by swimming this way I should rotate from side to side more using my lats which is easier on my shoulder that tends to hurt (it was the one I seperated in the bike race crash) as I have been swimming flat.

Need to work on all this before doing bilateral breathing. Plan is to drill/swim 2-3x a week by myself locally and Saturday's go to the Master's program they put on to have them keep watch of me and encourage me in proper technique. My big issue is I can't see myself swim so how do I know what I do right/wrong. Having good coaches watching over me should help me keep focusing in on what needs improving. I think practicing in a group I will learn to push myself more...need to train to swim faster so I swim faster.

I am so tired of being BOP swimming after swimming 3x a week for 4 years. I want to have a break through winter and I hope this challenge helps me get off on the right foot.

Sorry this is so long...trying to remember what I learned.

Kathy, awesome notes.  I started out in T.I. because of my non-swimmer background.  It was the best thing for me at the time.  Allowed me to swim without panic and swim comfortably and for long distances.  Now that I was able to swim an open water Olympic distance, it's time for me to start working on speed.

I would highly recommend T.I. to non/beginner swimmers as a way to feel comfortable in open water.  It served its purpose, but I agree with Kathy.  It's time to move on.  I can hit high 1:40s/100 yds on some of my speed training, but have never been able to break the 1:40 barrier.  Hope to do that by the end of the training season.

It's GREAT to have so many experienced swimmers on this team.

    Hey fellow RR's,

My name is Doug and I live in the mountains outside of Colorado Springs.  We're up here at 8500 feet and we've already had several snows (and there's still snow on the ground)!  Last year was my first year in the tri world and I completed 2 sprints and 2 oly's.  At my last tri (Pacific Grove) I won a slot to Alcatraz, so I really need the swim focus!!  I'm also planning on a HIM this year.

I'm a lousy swimmer, but I've come to really enjoy it.  Living up here, the closest pool is down the mountain, 15 miles away.  It can be a tough drive sometimes because of the snow, so I don't want to hear any excuses about not making it to the pool!

Awesome Doug! Sounds like you're in the right place for some swim motivation

Welcome Doug!  My family and I were out in CA this summer, and as I looked out into the bay from the Golden Gate bridge, I thought 'I wonder what it would be like to swim from Alcatraz.'  That tri is on my tri 'wishlist.'  Good luck with training this year.  I'm planning on my 1st HIM in June, and yes, I too consider myself a 'lousy' swimmer...

Yes.  Very relaxing.  I have 2 boys (and a girl).  The older one (17) can run the snowblower, and the younger one was shoveling cleanup.  So didn't have to touch a shovel this weekend.  It was great.  My son had a part in the HS play 'James and the Giant Peach,' so we went to see his play this weekend, but other than that, it was time in the house with the family, playing cards and watching DVDs (and the Ironman World Championships on NBC ).

Uh...it's just a trial separation.  We have other methods by which to communicate.  But I'm sure she'll get caught up in the thread which is 'The Evil Elves' and will ignore other aspects of her daily life, like remembering we were once on the same BT mentor group together.  She was the first.  Heh.
