Subject: RE: PeterAK's Group: THIS TREEHOUSE IS FULL!!!
Is the thread the appropriate place to ask random triathlon questions? This is my first tri, my first mentor thread, my first *anything* of the sort so please just direct me to the appropriate place. Thanks!

Ok, so I've recently learned I will not be able to participate in the April sprint due to a commitment that same weekend. I've found another one the end of May, but now I have my doubts this is ever going to work at all.

This sprint in May has published the course closing times. Oh goody. Let's confront this fear (DNF?), right away.
Starts at 8:30
Swim closes at 10 (.5 mile)
Bike closes at 10:30 (15.7 mile)
Run closes at 11. (3.1 mile)

First question, ok paranoia, does this seem fast? That's 2.5 hours to complete the whole thing, else they shut you down and you go home empty handed? Is this a normal course close time?

edit: I've checked the finish times of the people in my age group in a few other races. It does appear 2.5 hours is about the max it takes anyone to complete a sprint. Huh. I also note the slowest run pace is 10/min mile. I guess I'll aim for that then. Whew, seems pretty out of reach atm.

No, it doesn't take me an hour and half to swim 500 yards, so I'll have an hour extra there at least. However, I most assuredly will NOT be peddling at 30 mph so 15.7 miles will probably take me an hour, if not a skoosh more. If there are hills, the full 1.5 hours isn't out of the question. AND THEN, there is just no way in heck I'll be able to sustain 10/min miles. I can't run a 10min/mile fresh, let alone three of them after exertion.

Yes, I realize my endurance will improve between now and then. But my goal was to finish, I wasn't paying much attention to times. This was quite the wet blanket. As horrible as this is to admit, if they shoo me off a course, I will be so humiliated, I will wish I didn't start. I can handle my own need to stop, but being forced to stop...I can't explain why, but that so much worse. Perhaps I'm neither physically nor mentally capable of this in this time frame.

Excuse me but, GDI!!!!, I was doing SO WELL.

If I really do need to sustain 18mph bike, and 10min/mile, I guess I'm glad I know that now. I'll just have to keep working. (still reserve the right to be miffed though)

I kind of have the same fears, but fear is a great motivator. Use the fear to train and overtrain for the distance. Right now I know I can bike the distance and run the distance, but I can't swim more than 75 yards straight. That is going to chance since I am spending 4-5 days in the pool. The more I fear/stress something, the more I work to alleviate the stressor.

Let's just relax and quit the worrying. I know you are going to do well. We know you are going to do well. And I am sure you know, deep down, you are going to do well. We have over 5 months of training. As long as we are consistent WE WILL DO WELL.

That's the first piece of advice I got on the swim - RELAX (from Zilla and Regimom).  Then pace yourself on the bike - nice easy peddle strokes.  Then the run - it's almost over - start out and a good pace then really kick it in at the end.  I was really worried for my 1st tri too but when I was done, I reallized how much fun it was!  And that's the best part!  And the crowd.  And all the contestants cheering each other on!  What a great sport!

On tap for the weekend?

Might try a run in the morning w/ friend of mine and also a BTer - but she's gonna have to loop around and pick me up when she starts running at her 7:30 pace - yeesh.  Then I have an aquatech class at the YMCA at 8am.  Then I got nothing - maybe some more swimming on Sunday.

Hope everyone has a Happy Holidays!

I'll be out of the loop so to speak for a few days after Christmas.  We're visiting friends of ours in Ohio.  Then back in town just in time for a 5K Run into the new year race.  Free beer!  Bottle of champagne!  What could be better?   Well.....nevermind

I'm staying in the house except for maybe some swims at the gym in the wee hours of the morning.

BTW, when you guys swim, do you push off the wall? I have been swimming around at the end of the 25m pool...never touching the wall or the bottom of the pool. I do that because I'm thinking I won't be able to push off a wall in a triathlon. I want the swim part to seem easy (it will at least be straighter than the path I have to take to turn around at the end!). Anyway, I see my swim times are EXTREMELY slow compared to everyone else's that I look at. I did just learn in September, and can only breast stroke, so I know I am really slow, but it would just make me feel a little bit better if I knew the times I'm looking at are including a little "push"....: ) Thanks.

Absolutely push off walls, while you can't push off a wall in a straight swim - you don't have the constant accelerate/deccelerate cycle you are currently putting yourself through..It doesn't have to be a big push ... but enough to keep momentum the same as when you are swimming. It's not cheating

Happy holiday-last-minute-weekend-try-to-get-it-all-together time!  Yay!  I have 4 days worth of stuff to do, crammed into 1.75 days.  Story of my life.  It snowed 3 or 4 inches in my area, and it is crazy cold, but the sun in shining and I'm determined to get my 4 hour MTB ride in today and depending on snow conditions... a 3 hr road ride tomorrow.  We shall see....

It looks like everyone is focused on their swimming right now.  It's a great time of year to work on that!

Merry Christmas everyone!  Been a busy weekend.  Now sitting in front of a fire at home and not looking forward to what I accidentally allowed to be a busy work day tomorrow...

My blank post above was an attempt to post from my mom's Mac.  Any of you Mac users?  There is a new computer in my immediate future and I'm planning on going Mac.  I assume Firefox works well on Mac's with BT, is that true?  Input appreciated!

Schedule?  What's a schedule???  It's almost January and that's when the azz kickin' starts!  Life has been busy the last couple weeks.  It all comes back to training on 12/31 at 9 a.m.  Any of you guys in the MKE area want to join tupuppy and I for a ride at the DTC?

Joe's down for 5-8a. He's talkin' about a century that morning (maybe a metric century). I'll probably keep him company then. Why don't you dudes wake up a little early and join in? Would be a fine way to finish off '07 - shakin' up the status quo!
