Maple Grove, MN | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group - CLOSEDernestov - 2011-09-02 12:18 PM Chris, Are you icing that down? your ankle looks swallen from the picture. Also, keep in mind that running through injury only perpetuates the injury, never heals. There's ways to keep the running fitness without the impact, best one being pool running. Basically, you just get in the pool (with running shoes or VFFs) and try to run. Seems stupid but it actually keeps your fitness level WAY up there. Just time it (if you had a long run do the time equivalent in the pool). Second best is running stairs, very low impact, super high HR. You can do this to replace intervals (resting while you go downstairs and charging upstairs). Just be careful on the descent, do it at a walking pace. Best place, the bleachers in a big stadium. Currently, I'm not icing. I probably should. I don't think, other than the bruise, that the ankle is swollen. It looks the same as the other ankle. I just got back from running six slow miles at lunch (did this before I read your response). The ankle wasn't really noticeable. The bruise hurts if I poke it, but not if just run. I'll check how it is tonight - whether it looks and feels better or worse. |

THe purpose is the ease to clean road rash if you have a wipeout. The hair makes the cleaning process really painful and complicated, and infection becomes more than a possibility.ernestov - 2011-09-02 12:18 PM BTW, I see you didn't shave for the tri last weekend, unless you're a werewolf. New Orleans sells out around February, so plenty of time. Heck, it may not sell out this year with all the new races in the area. |

Good luck on the Sprint Monday, I guess by this time you drove the course and you know that the bike is tough, lots of hills in downtown Austin. Don't be afraid to fly down Congress Ave as you go Southbound, so you make up time for the slow climbs. Enjoy it!!! |

I had to restrain myself for a few days. Ernesto, I did drive most of the course last night. I didn't see any big intimidating hills. Maybe they only look like hills on the bike. I think they changed the course from Captex. There are still openings if you want to race. It looks fast and mostly flat to me. I talked to a guy at spin class Tuesday that said if I could get through the entire spin class we just did, I would be fine on the course. We'll see. At least the weather is going to cooperate. |

Went for my first 20 mile run ever and was worried about how it was going to go, especially after running hard last week on my 1/2 M. I ran at an easy pace focusing on HR (135-145) and overall it went well. I ran for 3:50 and actually felt good for most of the run, even after some steep climbs at the beginning. So this was a good confidence booster and my goal of trying to do my first marathon under 4:00 might not be so out of reach. However, we will see how I feel tomorrow, which might me another story. Jackie and Carol, best of luck on your tri tomorrow, kick some B... and have fun! To all friends in the US, enjoy your Labor Day Holiday tomorrow! |

Fortunately, I feel good today so I will have to go out and make it right this coming weekend Madonna "La Mulatona" is lovely, GREAT for climbing, stiff, fast and responsive. I never thought I would like a road bike that much. Still, my aero rig is my choice for any training above race pace (like intervals) but having two bikes (one for strenght and one for racing) is a blessing. The thread keeps getting quieter... We need some fresh blood here, I would love for you guys to show what commitment and brains will help you achieve in a relatively short period. I was thinking, you guys have reached many milestones. Just to name a few: Gabe: 1/2 Mary PR, 1/2 ironman finish. Barry: First Olympic triathlon. Jackie: Three sprints and incredible fitness gains. Chris: A superb running base and speed. Mark: First full Ironman, now AG wins. Myself: Broke 12 hours in my Ironman and had a personal record in Half IM distance (Puerto Rico) in a stupid tough course. What am I forgetting? |

Maple Grove, MN | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group - CLOSEDI want to give a testimonial to this group and its leader, Ernesto. Since I joined this thread on April 29, 2011, I did my first Olympic Triathlon in June (and got a PR!), with lots of good advice from Ernesto on how to train for it and race it, PR'd a half-marathon in May (and got GREAT advice on how to run it by Ernesto) and on my hometown sprint tri in August, improved my time from last year on the bike and run by 7 minutes (a new tri bike helped). I also did my first two 5k's, doing better than what my other race times would have predicted. But more importantly, I was seriously overtraining before my Olympic tri. I was unhappy, tired, crabby and wondering why I was doing this stupid sport. After that, I finally took Ernesto's advice and read the Maffetone book. And actually followed it, doing what I called a three week "Maffetone reboot", doing nothing but 180-age workouts. While I'm still worried about my ankle, yesterday I was able to run 10 miles at 8:50 with an average heart rate of 130 bpm. It didn't hurt that it was 50 degrees out, (yes, parts of Minnesota literally FROZE last night) but I NEVER would have been able to do a run that long at that pace with that heart rate if I didn't join this group. This group is making me think I may be able to do a full ironman in 2013. Before I joined, I would have thought the very idea was crazy. I get a lot out of hearing about other member's experiences as well. I think if Gabe (who is about my age) can do a half-IM in Guatemalan weather, then maybe I can as well, at least in Minnesota weather. (Not to mention Mark's full ironman in the town with the lovely meter maids.) I love hearing about podium placements by Jackie and Mark. (Speaking of which, where are Jackie and Carol telling us how they did today?) So yes, please keep posting everyone. |

He is very fast and needs a name. Suggestions anyone? 2) My T2 transition was very good. T1 was long for everyone. 3) My goal was to run the entire run course, NO WALKING. I managed to do that even though so many people were walking. I fought off the demons and kept a smile on my face. 4) I encouraged some participants, spectators and volunteers on the course and gave back to the sport and that was tremendously rewarding for me. 5) My youngest daughter came to see me race and I think she even enjoyed getting picked up at 5 AM. 6) Carol and I met on this forum and are developing a wonderful friendship. 7) I have actually figured out that this is racing and a few times today realized that my bike speed was in excess of 30 MPH. I know that's no biggie for you veteran masculine types, but that's a big woohoo for me! More later. I'm not done learning, so get ready Ernesto! |

Expensive, you love it, but doesn't move an inch unless you push it. Sounds like my dog. His name is Pirate. |

Master 1609![]() ![]() ![]() Gold Coast Australia. | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group - CLOSEDCongratulations Jackie!!! So good to hear about the successes of this group. So good you are happy with your bike too, this is a great inspiration to get out and ride! From my perspective... apart from the tangible achievements we can show from time to time, there are other things we cultivate that were inspired by this group and Ernesto's advice. One of them, in my case, is the nutritional side. I am more aware of the junk, sugar, yeast and wheat. This is hard being vegetarian of european origin - bread, pasta, cheese are big in my diet, but knowing I can feed a chronic inflammation in the body makes you think about it (especially these days when I feel joint pain after every run...). As far as running faster, this is another hard one Ernesto... Signing up for short 5k races seems to be a good motivation though! The last one I did felt hard, but what I didn't mention is - I ran almost all the time with a girl who barely passed me in the end. She pushed hard, so did I. What I learned after the race was that she did 7 IMs and her usual time is 11hrs and few minutes! Next time I have to kick her butt in that 5k race! Hope you all had a great weekend!
