charlotte hobbs - 2012-01-14 11:18 AM Day 7/14 of carbohydrate test.  I think there is no question i am carbohydrate intolerant but i will complete 14 days.  how have others made transistion from 2 week test to new nutrition plans?   I hope my weight loss will continue.  i feel great!

Charlotte, start by introducing very high quality carbs into the diet slowly. Those could be brown whole rice (better if organic), an incredible amount of non starchy vegetables like eggplants, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. and then some starchy stuff like sweet potatoes. I'm glad that you are feeling great too. Smile

ernestov - 2012-01-14 4:18 PM Today I put a hilly ride, 76.95 miles in 4:55'54". Leg crushing hills, a new route that I haven't done before. I can't believe it, we have "Texas Mountains"! Very choppy hills, with some serious grades (up to 20%) but none of them longer than a mile. I suffered, exactly what I needed.

Today was a recovery day.  Slept in until 7ish, 30 minute spin on the trainer, and a walk in the sunshine with my hubby and dog.  Not counting the walk in the totals, but it sure was nice.  Was supposed to be in pool school for 1.5 hrs today, but that has been rescheduled for tomorrow due to a swim meet.  So swim and run on tap for tomorrow, but may have to throw in a bike ride because it is just too beautiful outside not to!

Decent 2+ hr ride on the indoor trainer today.  32.88 miles in 2:09:33.  It's interesting to note that of the last few times I've done the same Spienrvals workout, my average HR was the lowest today but my avg speed was the highest.  I think that might mean I'm starting to see a little bit of improvement.

I love to see so many of you still getting your days in, 14 days into the challenge. We all have our own struggles and it becomes difficult to put the workouts in the bag, so my respect to each and everyone of you. We're growing as athletes and I believe as individuals too. The sport of triathlon as I have experienced grounds people to reality and makes life so much more enjoyable.

Today as part of the route I rode through downtown Dallas. I drove it a million times and NEVER enjoyed, until this morning it is. When you're running or riding a place you soak it in.

I love you guys, I never thought this thread would become what it is. Thanks for being here, the enthusiasm and the commitment.

Keep having fun! Cool

Last night when I updated I didn't change my days from 9 to 10.
Just now I finished on trainer for 1:15:00. Plan was for 1:30 but my son needed attention.
I used trainer road for first time but definitely missed something on the setup. I think Im missing virtual power (note I don't have a power meter). All I had was HR and the system wanted me to ride some intervals that were way too high for my HR.

Can someone look at my data and let me know what is off (I feel like everything is off)? It's seems like another graph band is missing (maybe power).
Btw where you see big HR drops was due to my 4 mo old son crying and my need to pause and stop. So I wasn't really able to get full focus.

On a three-day mini vacation in Wisconsin. Not following the Don't-Eat-Like-A-Pig diet. But I am running in the really pretty Wisconsin countryside. 8.4 mile run. 1:16:33. 15 mile run tomorrow. (That was my excuse for carbing up at dinner.)

Question.I have run 13-14 mi 4 times over the last several weeks. HM is two weeks away. On Monday, I have the opportunity to run a hilly 8.5 mile route or go on a long easy bike ride. My left knee is a little sore from my long run on Friday and I would prefer to ride. But I want to know what is best for the race. I think 8.5 hilly run might be too much. Thoughts?

I got in a swim. Oldest didn't get home until 12:30 from work (still can't sleep when the teen age driver is out) we were up at 5:30 on the road by 6:30. My son had an 9:00 AM basketball game in a city 2 hours away. Then another 1 1/2 hour drive to Michigan State campus. 3 hours of walking around campus on tour, church, dinner out, and I still pulled off the swim. So first swim since October and I still swim like a barge, I over rotate and kicking drills stink! So 30 minutes swim, 400 warm up, 400 drills, 200 warm down.

Ride! no run while in pain Jackie, ever. Swim too. Make sure that you have some play in your cleats (about 10 to 15 degrees) because speedplays are great pedals but somewhat stiff, and they need to be greased periodically, cleats oiled every two rides.

The play will allow for the knee to heal faster. Also be careful, maybe the bike created the problem but it surfaces while running.

This is where it starts to get tough for a few days. Between now and maybe day 20 you will struggle a bit to get your workout in, the solution is to take it easy especially if you're not used to these volumes.

Use the weekend to sleep more, eat well and make sure you back off the pace if you're tired. Thirty minutes does the trick, never forget that. The real benefits of this challenge are yet to be seen for most, they are evident in the last few days.

I read this and wanted to laugh.  This is the worst weekend in my shift pattern.  I'm on late shifts, which are usually 2pm-midnight, however on Friday and Saturday nights we drop back to 4pm-2am or 5pm-3am.  This weekend I got the good option and am on 4-2.  That still means that it's nearly 3am, I've just got home from work, and I have to be back there in 11 hours to start my 2pm shift on Sunday...  Sleep is definitely a luxury at this point.

So my workout for Saturday was a 30min easy spin on the turbo.  Legs are tired and it's all I had time for before work.  Sunday will be similar.

Oh, and just to improve my mood for the weekend, on Friday night we were all told that our rest day (which is what we call days off between shifts) has been cancelled for 29th January (there's a big local soccer match).  I only get 2 weekends off out of 5, and due to working overtime over christmas I haven't had a full weekend off since November.  Now, apart from next weekend when I'm doing the HM, my next weekend off work will be March.  I'm most gutted because I was planning to find some friends to go out for a long bike ride that day.  Now I'm going to have to plan to do it all on my own on weekdays, which just isn't as much fun.

(Chris, I've corrected your number of days)

Banner day I don't know it will last, I ate an ice cream that has such a high fat content that it cannot be sold off of the Michigan State campus. Darn Ag schools. It did taste incredible, and I did share a single scoop with my wife. Just staying true to the don't eat like a pig diet.

Like Scott mentioned we did a 2 hr spin on the trainer.  This was the second time I have done that workout this month.  Comparing the two, my speed was higher and my HR was 1bpm lower.  Not much but I'll take it.  When I did this workout in November I did have an even higher speed and lower HR... However, I think that some of my issue today was that I still have not replaced my saddle and after about an hour I became horribly uncomfortable and had to slow down to adjust how I was sitting.  I was having some pains in my back and I'm not sure it was from my position or the fall I took the other night.  Also noticed some of my gears were slipping so I need to take it in for adjustment.  Still trying to get the 'new' out of it.

Jrdimaur - 2012-01-14 7:49 PM Last night when I updated I didn't change my days from 9 to 10. So I wasn't really able to get full focus. http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/14937

How did you come up with your FTP? did you get tested?

No I didn't. It said if you didnt know it leave it at 200.

I think I need to go back and do it the right way and do the test.

That's a bit high perhaps. I would lower it to 180, 190 at the most. Using 200 as a reference would make your anaerobic stuff go well into the 300s and that is hard to produce for longer than a couple minutes even for me.

Well it did not go according to plan on Saturday. Was not looking forward to swim and it showed. I already had my questions all week as to could I do it or not and I fail big time. Got about 100m into the swim and pulled out. Still not 100% sure as to what snapped in my head to make me stop. I felt fine and was not panicking but something just made me pull up and stop. I was very frustrated as soon as I was out the water for not pushing and to this piont still can't say why I stopped. Angry that I lost my 2 free days in the challenge and angry that I didn't get the ride and run I was so looking forward to. Dissappionted also to have let the family down as the kids where looking forward to see Dad(i promised them i wont let them down again).
Punished myself when I got home and went for a 80min run. This was also a struggle as I ran out of fluids and the temp was in the mid 30*c. Took good 12+ hrs to get hydrated again.

So where to now???? Going to book a swimming coach and work on that side. A few friends have offered to help so will be doing alli can to get this sorted. Have a few sprint tri comes up I will look at but only when my swimming is sorted.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement from this group. Sorry I couldn't see it through this time.
