Currently down to 162.5 from 170 right after new years. Right on schedule for 155 by race season. I wonder if there is a point where too much weight loss equals too much muscle lost and less speed or endurance??
There is. I'm personally of the opinion that the run of the mill AG'er doesn't really get there. I'm keeping a close eye on my training performance vs. weight and will definitely up my caloric intake if I see a dip. |

I am either too old for this or my body is rejecting endurance training. Does anyone else have constant issues from training? I constantly have piriformis in my right glute. Massage the cheek with a tennis ball...hard. It helps sooo much. I also struggle with IT band crap on my right side as well (sometimes nagging pain in the hip area....other times it's the outside of the knee). Knees are sore if I have big days. Getting older is so glorious. |

I'm wondering if some glute attention (strength and flexibility) would help with the issues. I am sure it would help. I really do not stretch or strengthen them. I spent 20+ years doing squats so I dont do any work on them now. I will start stretching. I started doing alot of hip exercises to help my IT issues as well as plyos. It has helped with the knee pain but I started feeling my hip flexors get tight- I thought that was good.. I would try to stretch but I could not get them loose. Then my hams started hurting when I slept so I thought I was getting out of balance, quad vs. ham. After doing some research I discovered the piriformis run around your hip and I found some exercises to stretch it and OH MY!! I hurts so bad it feels good. Anyway, I keep going from one problem to the next. |

Extreme Veteran 610 San Francisco CA | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Hi all! I've totally been MIA this week has been a bit nuts. Kelly sorry to hear about your bronchitis, hope it clears up soon! I'm getting over my cold but now the stomach flu is going around San Francisco and I'm praying I don't get it. The high school where I swim masters is actually closed today because 200 of their kids came down with the flu. Makes me SO glad I skipped masters on Monday since I was still getting over the cold. They have a team at the school doing a deep cleaning and I think they are going to shock the heck out of the pool to try to kill any lingering germs. Yuck. |

Look after yourself, and don't try to rush back too soon and make things worse for yourself. Hopefully things get better soon for you. I'm keen for the weight loss challenge, I have a lot to lose, started the year at 242lbs, currently down to 237, the goal is to be under 198 by the end of the year. I was as low as 212 last year, before my calf injury so I know I'll get there. It's just a slow and steady process right? Also, I finally did a LT test on the bike last night, 30 min TT taking the average HR for the last 20 minutes. I got an average of 154BMP which gives zones of:
Do these sound sort of right to you guys? Or are they a little low? I tried to push as hard as I could, but did have to slow for a few seconds to get around corners. Should I try again inside on the trainer for a more controlled test? |

Should I try again inside on the trainer for a more controlled test? Its tough to do a bike TT outside because of things like corners, road conditions, stop signs, etc. There is no low/high in HR -- its personal to you, that being said, you might want to confirm the results with a trainer test, where you only have to focus on riding hard. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED OK, so for the weight loss challenge here is who I have: Steve Carrie Kelly Jeremy Karen Sarah Scott?? Andrew Anyone else, let me know. We will start with a weigh in next Tuesday morning and submit weights every Tuesday morning. I will put together some sort of spreadsheet to track. Lets all try to track as much of our nutrition as much as possible (you can list in nutrition section of training log, easy and quick), for accountability, but also for suggestions or ideas of what some people are doing that might be successful. We have had alot of nutrition questions in this group. We will track for starters for 3 months or we can track through the summer. Please also send goals for the challenge, lbs or nutrition changes. For great motivation, Kelly please give us the statistic of how many seconds you gain running for every pound lost??? |

Although I have not been able to do much, ive been still holding strong with diet and maintaining 156-159. I believe I was 155 or so all summer so I'm pretty good where I am at. Good luck to everyone. |

For great motivation, Kelly please give us the statistic of how many seconds you gain running for every pound lost??? Weight loss corresponds approximately to a 0.62% (recently revised based on feedback and more recent data) and 0.42% per pound increase in running and biking pace respectfully. That works out to be about 3 seconds per pound per mile. HUGE impact. For most people that have extra fat to lose, a 20 pound weight loss is reasonable given a year's time, which results in about and hour time improvement in a full iron. An approach that includes losing weight and training can have a synergistic effect resulting in even larger improvements in performance. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED What's up, peeps???I got in an hour run this morning, and that's likely to be the only training session I'll do today. If I have time, then I may squeeze in a kettlebell session. Half day at elementary school today + 2 well child visits + errands + packing for trip (leaving tomorrow morning). Our house goes on the market the 1st of March, so we have a lot of work to do around here, too. Ladies - favorite running tee shirts or tanks? I'm in the market for some new ones. I usually run in a sports bra and shorts, but I'm not racing in that. LOL Hate the tanks I have. |

That's what I want to lose in half a year. Somehow the extra 10 pounds became more like 20 over the last few months. Where did the extra 10 come from??? (I know where it came from, ice cream, beer, candy, cake, cookies, crap!) Anyway, I'm excited for this challenge. But, a little hesitant throwing my # out there. I know the scale is just a #, but I've always been self conscious about it. I track my food on Livestrong, and when I do that I make better choices. I'll start putting that into my log on here as well. |

Makes me feel infinitely better about my swimming LOL. Will get some trainer time at lunch. BTW tried two really kick a$$ recipes this week. For those of us that have lots to lose, maybe 20 lbs or more, maybe even take a picture of yourself naked and keep that as your motivation. No need to post, ha, ha. I have heard though this is a good motivation. Take a pic monthly and watch the transformation. I have said at the beginning for 2012, this is a year for transformation!!!! |
