swbkrun - 2009-05-13 9:06 AM Holly when I first started swimming I found that if I opened my eyes I could see a lot better !!!  Just playing.  If you are swimming in murky dark water they have different goggles that actually help out a lot for that....

As for the "race" I would be interested, it may be fun, but keep in mind this is something that needs to be done over a span and what I mean by that is that some people are following a schedule for training, and I would hate for them to go out and blow up one day because of this little competition.  It will/would be fun but set it up over a 2 week span.

As for flat vs. hilly I am with Matt on this one.  We live in a pretty hilly area, but I do have a conversion program that I can use that says if you ran 5 miles with 1000 feet of climbing at an average of 10 min. mile this equates to a 9:30 pace.... etc... So if you have a way to keep track of your elevation gain/loss then I can figure it out.... Spin class, or stationary bike... No way!  Treadmill---ok... Pool vs. Open water (wetsuit/non wetsuit?!).... I vote pool....

Little competition? Little competition? I think you are underestimating what Tony has in store for us. We should gert NBC out to video all of us. This is going to be huge.

LOL!  my goggles broke halfway across the lake sunday, so i did have to swim eyes closed.  i was even more scared than normal.

ccol to get that first one in Holly.  the more you do it, the easier/more comfortable you get.

For Trevor I would like to see the video because we know how shady those Canadians are...

Couple of questions.

400M or 400Yards, not sure what most have available to them, I have my pool at work which is 400M, I swim significantly faster at the local HS's which have 400yard pools.

For Run and bike, I think we just do it outside, pick a spot and go with it, some will have hillier routes some like me are going to a pancake flat PR heaven called Haines Point that is a 3.5 mi pancake flat loop that is usually closed to cars.

Thats why we will average out times.

And I agree with Steve, I figure once we get everyone that wants to do it we have a week or so to complete, we can decide.  Doesn't have to be done all at once either, Swim, monday, Run Tuesday, Bike Friday, all are good.

Trying to keep it as simple as possible, maybe we can do some weekly or monthly things like this if it works out, I tend to have race pace workouts every so often and always looking for motivation.

You have a 400m pool at work? Wow, we only have 25m & 50 m pools here. HA! I agree with you on the process though.

Suzy, now that you are into the commando thing are you also going to start running in skirts?
Steve carries a Murse Surprised

Steve, concerning your good workout/bad day.  My best workouts are usually on horrible days.  The badness of the day usually distracts my brain during the workout so I just bust thru it.  Got a great workout and my brain is clear when I'm finished.

I like the virtual race idea.  I'm in.

Splitting it up over a week makes a huge difference.  I thought this was a brick event.  My prediciment was that the lake was recently described as slightly warmer than "needles in the face" cold, so swimming in the pool will be nice.  I was going to do the lake thing because riding from my pool is not an option - way too much traffic and lights to get to the open road.  I never ride on that side of town.

Yeah a brick would be nice but I figured that would be a logistical nightmare for everyone.

I will put up an excel spreadsheet for each team on google/yahoo, kind of like the challenges do, each person on the team will record their times for each event.

Again for our first try at this lets try to keep it as simple as possible hence not a brick, just do your 3 workouts at the correct length and enter them in the spreadsheet.

I want to play too.  That means hook me up with the virtual sprint.  I know a great hill that I can run on that is about 3 miles downhill, a river that I can get my downstream swim in, and I am working with my son on my drafting technique behind his SUV.

each team does a 400M swim, 12Mi Bike and 5k.

For those with pools in yd vs meters should we do 400 yds and then do some simple math to extrapolate the time to meters?

That works also, lol, I will go swim in a fast pool also.

Looks like all the regulars are in.

I will just include everyone that posts regularly.  I will use a dice roll website that I use for running Fantasy Football, you put in my e-mail address and it will send me your random number and will put the closest numbers on the same team.

Wow gang. Too much to catch up on. I'll have to spend half a day just getting caught up later. Got home from Cuba about 4:00 am this morning. Already been out and mowed the lawn. You we do have lawns up here and not snow all year round. Anyway my training is going to have to be put on hold for another few days as I developed a very bad rask while in Cuba. (I know no sympathy while on vacation). Unfortunately it covers my upper thighs all the way around my leg. So even just wearing pants is very uncomofrtable never mind running or biking. Going to see the doctor tomorrow. The doc in Cuba thought it might have been from all the chemicals they put in the pool water. Damn swim up bars. Had a great time with my family from Alberta though. Other than my legs I came back feeling rested and confident.

Oh yeah on another note I accepted a new job today in Toronto. Good job, bad travel time about 1 1/2 hours each way. That's going to put a cramp in my training plans. Now we'll see how much I really want to reach my HIM goal. I guess this will give me time to read more about nutrition, cycling, swimming, running. You know all those things we need for tri's.

Hope everyone is doing well and has had great success in their races.

Rob, I told you to stay away from those Cuban women. They are bad news.....Let me check my medicine cabinet. I may still have some ointment from when this happened to me a few years ago. HA
