Got my workout in this morning, which is a good thing since it's been raining here for most of the day now. This morning really kicked my butt; I'd have to check my logs, but I think it's the most I've biked on a day when I also swam/ran. It's been awhile since a workout got me this tired; I'm glad it's a rainy day and I can just sit at home and relax.

Came up with a clever way to get some exercise and family time in today.  Took my niece and nephew on a hike up to Humpback Rocks.  Fun and a decent workout.  We all had a great time (though my niece almost did a faceplant on a rock on the way back down... fortunately, just a skinned knee).

Mark, my main instruments are guitar and octave mandolin right now.  I'm taking classes in tenor banjo, singing, and guitar class in a different tuning than I normally play.  But just being immersed in something you love for a week with friends can't be beat.  Do you play as well?

Being a tourist sure is tiring!  Lol.  We spent most of the day doing a cave tour.  We plumped for the'adventure tour' which had us squirming through some pretty tiny openings, but also trekking through some pretty amazing caverns, lots of incredible rock formations, etc.  In the late afternoon we went to Rock City.  I was verrrry leery of it -- I always thought it must be a totally kitschy tourist trap.  Yes, there was some kitsch, but actually it was quite nice, and very well designed and constructed.  I was impressed.  And we basically had the place to ourselves because it was raining the whole time.  We just put our shoes (and in my case, glasses) into plastic bags and walked around barefoot in the rain while everybody else apparently stood in the gift shop.

Here is the newest addition to my home massage and trigger point therapy collection. It should be here in Thursday. I'll let you know how it stacks up against the Grid.

I had a really good run last night.  During the run, I experimented with focusing on stride length.  When I felt fatigued I focused on a shorter stride at an increased frequency and noticed I was able to keep my pace and avoid slowing down.  I have never really thought too much about the length of my stride.  So much focus has been put into strokes per lap while swimming, yet I don't ever hear much about running.  Would love to discuss this.  Jim

Sorry--need to take pics of the bike and get them on here. It will happen, just maybe not today.... Need to put the race wheels on and make it really pretty. Don't know if it is psychologic or physiologic but this bike feels faaaaast! We subtly tweaked my fit and I am very comfortable on the bike. I think I am going to have to change my saddle over from the old bike to the new. I wanted to see if I could get away with the stock saddle but last night's ride resulted in some numbness issues.....

Rene--No name yet. Thinking about just calling it "the Beast."

Nate--Welcome to the group. A really nice bunch of folks with some really good insight into triathlon and other things

Jim--I have a very short stride. When I count strides/minute I am close to 100 at almost every pace. Several years ago I had a period where I really concentrated on short strides/fast cadence/midfoot strike. It took a long time (maybe a year) for it to feel natural but now it is just how I run. It seems to be working. I had pretty well destroyed right knee wrestling. All of the above changes were done in an attempt to be able to run without worsening my knee issues and it has been a success. When I started working on short stride/high cadence I was almost immediately faster without any appreciable change in physical effort--but it was a mental challenge to run differently. I did a lot of the initial work on a treadmill where I could just set the speed and fiddle with subtle form changes to see how different things felt at the same pace.

I play mandolin.  I'd love to pick up an octave.  They sound great.  What kind do you play?

From what I've "read", it's a lot about stride length. The longer your stride, the more impact you're going to feel when your feet hit, so apparently a shorter stride is better. I've never measured my runs, but I have tried running with a shorter stride and it at least hasn't hurt my time or knees.

What I have noticed is a tip I got from Zen Tri that was talking about speed. He said that most people, when they want to go fast, open up their stride, which apparently is wrong. He said that your foot pushing off the ground is like your pull in swimming, that's where the speed comes from. He said imagine trying to crush an aluminum can (in my case it would be Diet Mountain Dew, love the stuff) and that the more force you're putting your foot down and pushing off, the faster you'll go. I've tried and he is definitely right. When I focus on pushing off harder, and keeping my stride short so I can do so more often, I definitely speed up.

Absolutely not an expert, just stuff I've heard...

Stu:So cool that you're a musician! Nice to see you getting a little work done while you play. Enjoy your family time!

Michael: The spelunking sounds like such and adventure.

Whoa, Rene! That looks like something I can defend myself with in a fight and do some damage! Can't wait to hear how well it works on you.

Got in a run while the kids ran amok in the kids area, but right when I dove in to start my laps, lightening struck and they had to close the pool. Will try again tomorrow.

Have a great day!

New question for the group. Who runs in the rain? Not sprinkling rain but pouring rain.

I will run in the rain if it starts raining while I'm out there. But I will not start a run workout when it is pouring outside.

What do you think about running in the rain? It has been raining here for a week. We've gotten over 5' of rain in the last few days. We're under a flood watch. I'm afraid of slipping on slick oil or getting blisters from running in deep water. Isn't this what treadmills are for?

This morning I've seen 4 posts from tri friends on Facebook (bragging) about their "awesome" runs in the rain.

Opinions?

And while we're at it what do you think about people who posts all of their workouts on Facebook?

I enjoy running in a light rain in the summer.  Otherwise, it's adjust schedule (preferred for long runs) or treadmill.  I really hate doing more than 5 miles on a treadmill (and there can be some conflicts b/c of 30 minute max if it is crowded).  I'm just not that hard core.  (see recent article by Scott Tinley)

I've never posted a workout on FB.  I did post my HIM, HM, and Marathon finishes.  FB is for politics... ooops... I mean pictures and fun stuff :-)  I don't have any problem with people who post their workouts any more than the politics, tune of the day, etc.  FB means different things for different folks... one can always hide 'em.

I love running in the rain and playing soccer in the rain! it keeps the body cooled down and I usually have my best runs when that happens. So far here in Dallas we have not had much rain so far this year!

Here in South Carolina, running in the rain has never been a problem, what with our decade-long drought. I've only ever had to once, and that was because it started pouring on a 7 or 8 mile out and back run. If my training plan called for it, I would do it.
About the Facebook posting, my wife and I were just talking about that! I think that most people don't want to hear that you exercise more than them. I post my race times bc they matter to me, but most people don't care if I rode my bike 20 miles, nor can most relate to it.

I pretty much post to Facebook every day. It's my payback for the political posts the rest of my friends make. Tongue out

As for the rain, I'll do it as long as there is no lightning and it's the summer time.

I like running in the rain.....assuming it is warm outside.  I will head out if it is a light rain and there is no severe weather in the area.  If its a heavy rain or there is severe weather I'll head to the gym for the treadmill.  I'm with Stu that about 45-50 minutes is my max on the treadmill despit the fact that the ones at the gym each have there own TV. Still get bored!

I don't post my workouts on Facebook.  I doubt many people are that interested in my exercise routine other than the wonderful folks in our group   I really don't post much on Facebook anyway.  Occasionally, Team MPI, the group that coaches me will tag me in a race related picture and that will show up on my FB page which is fun.  I never post that I am at "Ruby Tuesday" or just checked in at Express Lube or anything like that. I don't have a problem with folks doing that its just not something I keep up with.  I also don't post political stuff.  My views are inconsistent with approx 99.5% of other Alabama residents so I just ignore most of the political posts from my FB friends.  Even if I did rebut some of the political junk that is posted it's  certainly not going to change anyone's opinion.

I don't mind workout posts. Few things have bothered me enough to hide them. Daily angry rants, negativity about friends and loved ones, those make me uncomfortable, especially if it's someone I see IRL often.

My own posts are mostly humorous. Funny stories about my family and pictures for our family who live far away. If I post something about my workout, it's usually to share something funny or neat that happened. Rarely do I post really personal, of the heart stuff. Even my happy anniversary one for my husband was more like "I cannot believe he's put up with me this long".

It rains here a lot. I've had to start runs in pouring rain, and it's not the most fun thing for me, but I'm used to it. We have a wet season (we don't do four seasons here, we have wet and dry) where it rains pretty much every day. One thing I do to make it easier is wear the least amount of clothing possible and keep a full change of clothes and a big towel in the car to change right after a rainy run or soccer game. I will change in my car in a busy parking lot if I have to.

Thursday morning here. Weekend in sight. Yay! Dental appointment and hopefully a run/swim on tap.

Thanks for the replies! I post pictures from "A" races on facebook. The few times that I post is it normally bragging about our kids. Which I guess could be considered in the same light as posting your workouts on facebook.

Got in 3 workouts today just to see if I could. This is the first time I did all 3 tri event workouts in a day. They were spread out over the day which made it easier.  Not sure it will become a habit, just because I'm not a fan of waking up super early to get to the pool!

Thanks to Jamie for joining me on the ride! Gonna let my rear end rest for the next 2 days, so no biking. Really hoping I build some sort of callous or extra muscle or whatever so it won't be so sore after being on the bike. Laughing

Race is on Saturday!

Yep, that was a great ride, Nate! I went for a short run after the ride, which, coincidentally, was in a light rain. Funny we were just talking about that. Can't wait for the race this Saturday!

Stu

I play mandolin.  I'd love to pick up an octave.  They sound great.  What kind do you play?

Mark, I picked up a Trinity a few years back.  Like you, I played mandolin and drooled over the octaves for a long time.  Now it is my "go to" instrument for sessions as it works well for both melody and rhythm.  I've been really happy with the Trinity... bought it just to try it out figuring if it stuck I'd eventually upgrade, but never felt the need.  What kind of mandolin do you have?  Mandos are great for air travel :-)  Any particular style of music you play?

Okay, off for a morning run before a 2 hour training seminar.

Stu

Good Morning! Yes, I have a sprint this weekend. Hoping the predicted rain will hold off during the race. Weather forecast shows rain for another full week. So far I've been able to plan my run workouts in between rain showers. We're still under a flash flood watch.

Bike and run workouts on the schedule today.

Well, since finishing Chattanooga on Sunday I have been trying to figure out the rest of the season.  After a couple of days of eating too much and minimal activity I NEED to put a race on the schedule to have something to work toward.  I had thought I would do a few sprints and maybe another olympic......just didn't want to ramp up training for a HIM like Augusta. Looks like now I'm strongly considering Augusta at the end of September.  I have only done one other HIM (Ironstar..north of Houston....Rene's stomping grounds) and that was in Nov. 2010.  Really enjoyed the race, the HIM distance and had a solid race finishing in 5:27.  Given how well my training/racing has been going this year I figure this may be my best chance to try and break 5 hours.  I'm not getting any younger (turned 50 this past Tuesday) and at this point don't have any injuries that would derail my training.

I may pull the trigger tonight...guess I need to talk with my wife   My coach says we would likely bump up 2-3 training hours a week to add some longer rides/runs. Augusta swim is downriver and has been wetsuit legal so no real advantage to bumping up swim training from current levels.  It will be a HOT time to bump up training but what the heck....it will give me something to worry and b*tch about.   Anyone out there, with the voice of reason, see why I should not give it a shot?

We're both doing the Tri the Swamp rabbit here in Greenville, 250m pool swim, 16m bike ride, and 5k. I'll take 85 degrees over 105 degrees for it!
