Since we don't have a monthly challenge on the boards I'll toss out the 28/31 for anyone that wants in. I'm at 2/31 as of today. Lets get some!

Hi friends,

It's been far too long since I last came around here. I'm back in school now which leaves me with little free time. I finished up my season a few weeks back with a centurion race. I was dropped from the main field because of a technical issue but i connected with a smaller group and finished in a decent time.

Last week I took part in a study on the effects of endurance training on fat metabolization. It was fun and I got to do lab testing to determine my FTP, LTHR, CP, and VO2 max. Expensive tests done for free! I posted a picture of me getting prodded and probed by scientists below.

Other than that I've been doing mostly unstructured training. I hit the gym next week to start my 2015 training plan. I've decided to give up triathlons for next year at least. I'm going to get my UCI license and devote my time and efforts into moving up the categories of road and criterium racing and try to get a on a team by the end of next season. My body didn't do so well handling the run side of tri training this summer so I'm going to go back to basics next year with short distances frequently to build up my bones and tendons and perhaps try for another Ironman in 2016, depending on how racing goes next year.

Cheers all. Glad to see everyone is still training and racing.

Hey Everyone... My apologies for my absence... Life has been busy with the new job and the longer commute. But I got up this morning and got in a 3 mile run. I'm gonna try to do 3 or 4 this afternoon before football starts. 11 weeks until my 50k run and I've been eating like crap (candy corn is the devil) and drinking way to much beer. I had a Gose yesterday that was out of this world. Sour and salty - anyone else like that style.

Thanks to Alex for keeping the lights on while I was gone. Way to go Nancy Boy!

I will catch up on last weeks posts this afternoon but it looks like the Auburn fan kicked a little butt last Sunday. Too bad the Auburn player who returned the kick during last years Iron Bowl didn't run as slow

I'm an unfortunate member of this club too.

Oh well, time to get serious. 8 weeks to the Schaumburg turkey trot half marathon, so let's make it a good 8 weeks.

I'm going to finally take my own advice and jump on the Galloway run/walk bandwagon, run a whole bunch, at 3:1 run/walk ratio, and see if I can't click out a 1:50 HM.

What the F*&K is wrong with me???I run once maybe twice a week, ride only on the stationary bike and swim???What is that...yoga once a week. Eat poorly for the last two weeks...and feel like I need to start over every week! Ha and my family is pushing me to do a half IM next year...it is my goal but I have slacked so much the past year it will be difficult.

AAAnnnd who knew growing a garden would be the death of my healthy eating...i make salsa each week " to add to my egg whites" yeah well chips get most of the salsa. Beers? yes please!

Ok, lets try it again...pack a lunch each day, plan meals, train according to plan...pack for the week of training!
I am in on the challenge...heart and soul...no half ! 1 & 4...a little catching up to do!

I had my first day at the track today. It's the smallest Velodrome in the world at 138m. The bank is 55 degrees. It's a ton of fun. I wish I had done it earlier. It's going be a great break from the turbo trainer this winter. (pic below)

Speaking of trainers, I picked up a Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll used (along with the pro-flywheel). It is amazing. It's expensive new ( approx. 650 CAD) but you can pick one up used for 350 CAD. It has a thick piece of rubber sandwiched between two plates that acts as a pivot point allowing the trainer to sway from side to side slightly. Not only does this (plus the flywheel) simulate real riding really well it also takes some of the stress off the frame (for those worried about their carbon frames on the rigid trainers). If you're like me and don't have a power meter, Trainer Road has the power curve of this trainer programmed in and gives a pretty decent power estimate based on speed. (pic below)

Finally, I turned the guest room into my winter training room, complete with record player, lol.

I'm off to a slow start for the October challenge however I do have a half-marathon this weekend. It will be the first anniversary of my first HM, a distance I thought was unfathomable when I first started running a few short years ago. Since then I have ran four other official HM's and plan on running them as long as my legs can hold up! Back on the topic of training, I have my second Oly coming up over the first weekend of November so I need to keep myself in race shape.

Mark, that's great!! I am envying the fact that you have another tri race! Everything is starting to button up here with colder temperatures coming in.

I like the 28 challenge! Thank you for continuing this, I desperately need it. I looked at my log and it looks like I'm doing a bunch of stuff...but there's a TFW class, rock climbing, a spinning class (does this count for biking?), kayaking - none of which "count" toward the 28 - but that's okay. I went out for a bike ride yesterday, took my bike down in the garage and bam - flat rear tire. I grab sneakers, jumped in the car and just made it to a spin class. Tire is now fixed so here's to hoping for a few more nice days to get a few rides in. I did swim last Monday or Tuesday but it doesn't count for this month. So with mountain biking I guess I'm only 1/28 - but if spinning counts, then 2/28.
Beer is good.
Press on, friends!

Oh!! I can't remember if I mentioned earlier but between mountain biking and kayaking on Friday I enjoyed some west coast libation!! Sandi, you will probably know all of these! I'll see if I can post a picture! i had a "Day Hike" by Two Beers, a "Field Pale Ale" and a Harvest Ale by Fremont Brewing. (glad the beveraging happened after biking....lots of switchbacks on the mountain trail we took).

If you like forested southern country side it is pretty.  I would not call it scenic like some of the mountain races probably are, but it's a nice course.

Did my Oly this weekend (Marbella, Málaga, Spain) - beautiful weather! Unfortunately, my swimming glasses broke just before the gun went (I had read about it, but never though it would happen to me....) so I started asking around for a spare set and a nice mother gave me her little daughter swimming glasses, tiny pink (better than nothing...). Out of the water in 33min, then beautiful and fast bike ride at 36km/h (never been so fast) that I paid off in the run (56min for 10k). Great experience and huge confidence for my goal 2015: HIM

Love the SEattle beer trio! We have visited Two Beers a bunch of times and Fremont Pale Ale is a staple.

I'm in for the 31 and god knows I need the motivation. 4/31 today, two months ago I'd be at 7/31, so let's get to it! For me this is the equivalent of the weight loss challenge, as long as I put in an hour at least five days a week I can do decent with my weight. But am willing to support Dave with a weight loss challenge too...I HAVE to drop a few pounds this month!

Well aren't I off to a slow start. 3/31. Need to get in gear. Since I'm not running for 3'ish more weeks I am going to try and get in some more bikes. I know it won't count but some strength and mountain biking will get tossed in there as well.

Mental note for myself: If you have an injury and do PT to fix it and it works don't stop doing the PT just because the knee feels better. Lesson learned. Back to square one with the run. At least I can walk 50 feet now and not be in horrible pain, well most of the time anyways. It seems to hurt first thing in the morning before I'm loosened up and before bed when I've been on it all day. Back to stretching, foam rolling, and strength exercises.

Tri-gear on sale:

http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=3fa6bc5213&id=db02c357fa

50% Desoto clearance stuff. I just bought another pair of tribibs (the same ones I ran IMWI in) for $45 plus $9 shipping. The same ones I paid $90 earlier this year.

Desoto makes some of the best trigear on the planet. If you ever go to that den on iniquity called Slowtwitch, you'll see Emilio Desoto post there himself. They stand behind their gear. And it's phenomenal stuff.

DeSoto is amazing! I own a pair of the 400mile bibs and the new Riviera 7mm tri shorts. Both of which were bought at full price and I still have no regrets. I plan to pick up another pair of shorts on this sale. Great prices. I wish they had more colors in a medium. I need some all black If you are a size small the Forza mystery kit is only $30 now. That's for a tri top AND bottom! Charles was lucky enough to snag a set last year.

Have a short sprint this Sunday, then the HIM on the 25th. I am taking it easy with my back and just biking and swimming for now. I'll jump back on the challenge next month as I switch gears to working on a HM in Jan.

That transition sucks. I'm still not running right after IMWI. Going from tri-specific to run training is a lot harder - swim/bike is so minimal in impact, that getting used to the pounding again is hard. Also, the 15 pounds I put on during the last two weeks prior to and the four weeks after IMWI probably don't help.

*****

In other news, my wife and I booked our vacation! 7 nights in Cozumel, Mexico, 12/27/14 to 1/3/15 - New Year's Eve (which is also my birthday!) in paradise! We're also taking SCUBA lessons - the last set of lessons this year, for the next three weekends.

Let's see if I can find some abs between now and then!

hahaha....first freezing, cold local beer (Victoria), but then, for dinner, wonderful local fried fish with marvelous tempranillo, could not be better! But I have to say since I joined this great group, I am extremely curious about beer, and every city or country I visit, I try local beers, still learnining.
