Happychick - 2010-03-17 6:23 PM one last thing...has anyone done P90X? I've been debating about getting it since all I can do is sit on my arse until this shoulder thing decides to stop friggen killing me! Anyway, I figured since I'm concentrating strictly on running this year(K, I'm not reeeeally sitting on my arse, it just feels like it since I still can't swim or ride!) I would focus on strength training as well and thought I'd ask if anyone has any experience with this program.

The only disk I tend to follow is the Yoga.  Otherwise, I prefer Crossfit.

May I ask why? I know very little about crossfit ~ is it something I can do at home and while travelling (during our upcoming move we will be in and out of hotels.) For some reason I have it in my head that crossfit requires a gym?!

I've never followed the program but I have done a few workouts here and there when I have visited my family (who were following the program).  From my limited exposure I remember there being a focus on pullups.

I'm not sure how bad you're shoulder is feeling but I'm sure you could skip exercises that were bothersome and still benefit.  other than that I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Hopefully someone else with a little more experience can chime in.

x2

It's a lot of explosive movements.  I can't imagine how it would be easier on your shoulder than swimming, biking, or running...but I'm sure you could adapt some of the workouts.

OK, I had gone into this big long explanation and in doing so made me realize that I'm just a whuss and have been partially kidding myself! My shoulder is doing tons better but still bothers me almost on a daily basis. However, with that being said, I realized that I am just afraid to get back in the water and even test it since the last time I did (a few weeks ago) I lost all feeling in my arm and couldn't do normal everyday functions for several days ~ how pathetic is that?!

Needless to say, I'm thinking I am going to have to at least try, right..even though i've already committed myself to focusing on running and strength training this year to 1.make things easy and less stressful during our move by focusing on ONE event and 2.strength training with very light weight is part of my PT/rehab and i'm gradually building.

Now that I have had a heart to heart with myself (and the rest of you...thank you Jay! ) do you think P90x would be doable with modification if necessary?

tri808 - 2010-03-16 7:23 AM Ok...just got up...after hitting the snooze a few times

Jay, if we lived closer I think I would have to force your arse out of bed in the morns by making you my running partner! There have been a few days here lately that I seriously could have used the push! I don't know what it is about this cold but it sure is lingering!

LOL...I find it so much easier to sleep in when it's "cold"...keep in mind that we're talking about temps in the 60's =)

Oh I totally hear ya!! This morn was OH SO DIFFICULT to get up and it is still "FREEZING" out there (at 72degrees)

Paul.....you need an avatar!

Yes I do. I have one in mind but don't know how to write the code for it. I was hoping for a cool moving avatar like yours.

You don't need a code...you can shrink it using paint (although I have issues getting it small enough for an avatar using that) or you can use a site like this one!

I meant I don't know how to write the programming code to create a moving avatar. I also don't have any pictures that I want to shrink down and show the world.  I'm still considering my options.

Aaaaah! After writing that I kind of chuckled since you seem to be a guru when it comes to this stuff!

Crossfit is gym based.  However, all there information and workouts are available free.  Crossfit was founded on the ideal of free dissemination of information.

I prefer Crossfit because its structure more meets my needs and the demands of my job.  That is, all out effort for shorter periods of time.  Many of the workouts (WODS: workout of the day) can be done without weights.  In fact, body weight works well for my exercises, think burpees, squats, lunges, pull-ups, jumping rope, etc.

Checkout www.crossfit.com and www.crossfitnsc.com  There is a plethora of information available.  I will try to answer any of your questions.

Hey Michelle -
We did P90X for a few weeks - I have yet to get through the whole 90 days. We seemed to like it but it is an hour a day if you do it and then they do ab ripper x for 15 min 3 times a week on top of that. I found that especially in busy periods for work it was a struggle for me to get motivated to do the hour. I think it really works and have heard great things about the successes people have had with it.  One thing though - it might be tough to do it all with your shoulder hurt but I guess you could not do weights with it. The lean program we did had a shoulders day that was nothing but pushups and pullups - but I think the programs are different based on the version you do.

Yeah I was thinking I would have to modify it when it comes to shoulder stuff...I'd have to play it by ear and maybe just go through the motions to see how I fair the first time or two. An hour? Really? I didn't realize it was that long every time...hmmmm, I'm going to have to think on this one...

You're doing Waterfront this weekend, aren't you Jay?? Are you linking up with any of the other BTers?

Crossfit is fantastic!  I've done their workouts off and on for a few years.

My new "weight training" workout of choice is TRX.  I have a bad shoulder, too.  I worked with a trainer at my gym who modified some of the exercises to take into account my injured shoulder.  It is feeling very good right now.

Both Crossfit and TRX can be completed in less than an hour.

Yup...waterfront.

They didn't provide a swim cap...so I had to buy one.  The cheapest one they had was hot pink...so of course that's the one I got.  I buzz cut my hair...so I don't use a swim cap during training...LOL.

Not meeting up with any of the other local BTers...because I don't know any of them.  Besides you, I only converse with Shaved_Wookie...and he's not racing.  I've only been active in BT since about mid January, so eventually I'll cross paths with the others.

So after packet pickup, I decide to go for an ocean swim...basically the first time I've been in the ocean since learning how to "swim".  I kept telling myself I would go back into the ocean, but I kept going back to the pool.  I guess it was my comfort zone.  Anyway, so I jump in and start going along.  I'm a little nervous, because the water isn't exactly clear, and can barely see the bottom.  But after a while, I get used to it, and I figure out how to sight every 6th to 8th stroke.  Surprisingly, even though I couldn't really see anything in the water, it was much more fun than swimming back and forth in a pool counting laps.

The sprint I'm doing this Sunday won't be as calm as where I was swimming, but at least I got a feel for the salt water.  Living in Hawaii, you would think I'm a beach bum...but really, I'm a land dweller...LOL.
