Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED DDVMM - 2012-02-03 1:18 PM With all the talk about diet and nutrition, I have a question for you. I started a strength training program 10 weeks ago that called for no cardio for 4 weeks. I stuck to that for the most part except for 2 prescheduled 5K's. I was eating clean already so no real change to diet. During that 4 weeks with virtually no cardio, I dropped 8 pounds like it was nothing. After the 4 weeks I started back with moderate cardio and my weight has been creeping up since with no change in diet. All last year, while training for the tri's and HM's my weight was pretty stable and I couldn't lose anything even at my most productive weeks, even though I always want to lose 5 pounds. So, what is it about cardio that seems to keep the weight on? I log my food at myfitnesspal.com (Scott, anyone?)and I would love for someone to look at my food diary and tell me where I am going wrong. I try to eat at 40% carbs/40% protein/20% fat. Some days are better than others. Any thoughts? I don't know that you actually dropped fat while doing no cardio. I'm thinking you have some fluid retention issues that are related to the cardio (I find it easier to drop weight in rest weeks than in weeks when I'm doing 20+ hours). With regard to the diet, if you want to drop quickly that 40% carbs is high. The most effective way to cut weight fast is to cut out carbs (although there is a potentially adverse effect on the quality of your cardio training). Weight loss (especially when you don't have a lot to loose and are already doing most thing "right") can be a really tricky proposition particularly when you're female and getting older (none of us are 18 anymore). |

Glad you are back to training! How do you feel? Still have some chest tightness / wheezing. Going to take it fairly easy this weekend and going to skip the rest week and 20K next week so my trailing volume doesn't get too low. |

Weight loss (especially when you don't have a lot to loose and are already doing most thing "right") can be a really tricky proposition particularly when you're female and getting older (none of us are 18 anymore). Getting rid of water retention usually can be done by drinking more. My "heaviest" day of the week is Monday because its after my two longest days of training. You can also use things that help with water retention like green tea. With regard to protein-carbs-fat, I find what usually works best is having a hard cap on the number of carbs usually 50-75 grams. And tweaking it up and down depending on results. Some people need to go really low. Also your body needs a lot of water to digest carbs -- about 3 - 4 mL of water per 1 gram of carbs, so when you eat carbs your body tends to store additional water (and thus you "gain" weight). |

2 2/3 c. whole wheat flour 1 c. slow cook oats 2 c. honey 2 tsp baking soda 6 scoops vanilla whey protein 2 tsp cinnamin 1 tsp nutmeg 1 tsp cardamon 1 tsp cloves 2 tsp vanilla 1 c. unsweetened applesauce 4 eggs 2 c. canned pumpkin Pour the batter into an 8 x 13 cake pan, bake at 325 for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Today will start with a bout of herding cats at the 2nd grade basketball games and then up to the mountains for some x-country skiing with friends. My granddaughter is playing and she is so proud that as the only girl on the team, the boys tell her she is their best player. She is about the only one who makes baskets for them. Pretty good for being taught by her granny. |

It is about guys that are in particular program (seals, parajumpers, etc) and what the program puts them through to pass. HOLY COW The one group had to do a 3 mile run on the beach in full clothing and boots under 22 minutes! And not all of these guys were 19 year olds. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED I don't really need a water challenge, but I would suggest maybe drinking water that is ice cold - lots of ice. Makes it taste better. Also, drink water with all your meals. It is hard to become a water drinker ... I can sometimes get in a slump where my body is constantly begging for Pepsi, which is like a snickers bar for me. A Pepsi fountain drink is impossible for me to walk away from. |

Regular 1779 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED G'day guys, I woke up Saturday morning feeling quite fluey, so canceled my long bike. After a very lazy day felt a bit better so got it done Sunday. Only 2 hours, but that's me done for my rest week. On the recipe front, I live on my own so eat pretty simply, but one of my favourites is a lamb and warm kumara (NZ sweet potato) salad. Like i say, I'm not much of a chef, so this recipe may not make much sense, but here goes: 1. cut kumara into 1/2 inch cubes, roast. 2. dust lamb steaks (or fillets if the budget allows) with Moroccan seasoning, grill until medium rare 3. salad is made from rocket, halved cherry tomatoes, red/yellow capsicums and raw pistachio nut. 4. Dressing is 2 Tbl spoon extra virgin olive oil, 1 Tbl spoon vinaigrette, 1 Tea spoon each: dijon mustard and honey. a sprinkle of ground paprika, salt and pepper to taste. mix it all up. 5. it all has to be timed so everything is ready about the same time, add kumara to the salad, dress and toss the salad, put onto plates. 6. Slice lamb thinly, arrange on top of the salad, and sprinkle a small amount of feta on top to finish. |
