Well, since finishing Chattanooga on Sunday I have been trying to figure out the rest of the season.  After a couple of days of eating too much and minimal activity I NEED to put a race on the schedule to have something to work toward.  I had thought I would do a few sprints and maybe another olympic......just didn't want to ramp up training for a HIM like Augusta. Looks like now I'm strongly considering Augusta at the end of September.  I have only done one other HIM (Ironstar..north of Houston....Rene's stomping grounds) and that was in Nov. 2010.  Really enjoyed the race, the HIM distance and had a solid race finishing in 5:27.  Given how well my training/racing has been going this year I figure this may be my best chance to try and break 5 hours.  I'm not getting any younger (turned 50 this past Tuesday) and at this point don't have any injuries that would derail my training.

I may pull the trigger tonight...guess I need to talk with my wife   My coach says we would likely bump up 2-3 training hours a week to add some longer rides/runs. Augusta swim is downriver and has been wetsuit legal so no real advantage to bumping up swim training from current levels.  It will be a HOT time to bump up training but what the heck....it will give me something to worry and b*tch about.   Anyone out there, with the voice of reason, see why I should not give it a shot?

Randy

Call me the enabler.

I think you should definitely do this. HIM is really the coollest distance in triathlon Long enough to make it an epic event, short enough that you aren't destroyed for days/weeks when you are done.

With the fitness and results you have shown this year I think you will likely crush your five hour goal.

Played racquetball for 90 minutes this morning and have a slow run this afternoon. Friday and Saturday are rest days for me since I am racing the Disco Oly Tri on Sunday. I am more prepared for this Oly Tri then I was for the last one and I have lost some weight. It is going to be interesting!

I have been toying with the idea of the HIM in Austin next year but since it is quite some time away I was thinking about HIM Galveston ... still playing around with the idea!

Galveston is a great race. It would be my first choice over Longhorn/Austin.

Good luck at the Disco this weekend!

Randy- sign up for the Half. You know you want to do it!

We're both doing the Tri the Swamp rabbit here in Greenville, 250m pool swim, 16m bike ride, and 5k. I'll take 85 degrees over 105 degrees for it!

Yep! Hoping these storms passing through will keep the weather cool. Also hoping the storms leave before the race starts!

Did a strength workout today and am contemplating doing a run. I'm definitely taking tomorrow off since it's the day before the race. Should I do a short/slow run today or rest up for Saturday?

Randy, I'd definitely sign up for it. I've done the RnR 1/2 Marathon in Augusta and liked it a lot, and I've only heard good things about the HIM. It'll be hot, but we're all used to it in the South, right? Do it!

I'm reconsidering the whole post workouts to FB thing, Rene.  Perhaps the best defense is a good offense... gawd, the political posts are thick tonight.

I guess we're lucky that none of our friends post their political views on Facebook.

Hubby and I made a pact during the last election that we would not watch any politically based shows or debates. Instead we watch mixed martial arts better known as cage fighting. Basically the same premise except there is a definite winner/loser and not a lot of BS going on during the match.

Catwoman - 2012-07-11 10:57 AM New question for the group. Who runs in the rain? Not sprinkling rain but pouring rain. I will run in the rain if it starts raining while I'm out there. But I will not start a run workout when it is pouring outside. What do you think about running in the rain? It has been raining here for a week. We've gotten over 5' of rain in the last few days. We're under a flood watch. I'm afraid of slipping on slick oil or getting blisters from running in deep water. Isn't this what treadmills are for? This morning I've seen 4 posts from tri friends on Facebook (bragging) about their "awesome" runs in the rain. Opinions? And while we're at it what do you think about people who posts all of their workouts on Facebook?

Sorry I'm late to the party -- no internet, and then vacation recovery...  I'll run in the rain, but not thunderstorms (at least not on purpose).  the blister concern i rel if you go sockless.  I've not had a problem as long as I wear socks.

I don't think it is anything to boast about.  It's just running.  It does seem to me that some people are obsessed by weather and especially what they consider to be 'epic' weather-related activities, like running in the rain, but I don't have facebook and don't have a very good picture of what goes on there, so I've got no further comment on that aspect of it.

Got in 3 workouts today just to see if I could. This is the first time I did all 3 tri event workouts in a day. They were spread out over the day which made it easier.  Not sure it will become a habit, just because I'm not a fan of waking up super early to get to the pool!

Thanks to Jamie for joining me on the ride! Gonna let my rear end rest for the next 2 days, so no biking. Really hoping I build some sort of callous or extra muscle or whatever so it won't be so sore after being on the bike. Laughing

Race is on Saturday!

Nice!  In general, if you are going to do 2 or 3 workouts in a day, it is smart to do what you did and spread them out, if possible -- doing so allows each of them to be higher quality (you are slightly recovered).  It is also best (again, if possible) to make the most important or challenging workout first, so that you are fresh enough to hit your targets for that workout.

Your back side will get used to riding.  Is your main contact-point your sit bones?

Good luck to you (and Jamie) at the race this weekend.  I wish I could get up there to do it too, but IM training trumps racing this weekend.

I'm pretty sure it's my bones, that's what it feels like anyways. From the current pain (feels like a bruise) it seems like I favor (or put more weight on) the right side of my backside. But yeah, the pain is definitely where the bone is.

Thanks for the advice, good luck with your IM training!

Catwoman - 2012-07-11 10:57 AM New question for the group. Who runs in the rain?

I don't mind a medium to light rain if I'm already out.  I'll usually reschedule if it's raining before I go out.  This is because I find rain hitting me in the face distracting and I hate running with wet shoes.

If I need to get in a run workout, I'll go in all but a heavy rain.

Good luck to all of the racers this weekend.  Looking forward to updates.

Nate-heading into a race, assuming you are not training through it and using Michael's 6 hour taper plan , the conventional wisdom is to reduce volume but continue to incorporate some "race pace" intervals.  Nothing long or extreme but enough to remind your legs what it is like to work hard.  The length of your taper really depends on how important the race is for you and the length of the race.  Typically, the shorter the race the shorter the taper.  This is all very general and others may have positive experiences with other approaches.  I have been using a coach this year and I have typically had a rest day 2 days out before a race (i.e. Thursday before Saturday race) and then done a 30 min easy bike with 3-4 "pick-ups" and a 20 minute run with a few strides at the end. (Not necessarily as a brick) That may be a bit much since you are just starting out but that should at least give you an idea.

Rene-I like the MMA idea.....but I'm thinking maybe a match to decide each political race.  No ads, no debates, no huge contributions to each campaign,  Put it on pay per view and put the proceeds to a good cause. (What is a good cause would likely be debated with no agreement between the 2 parties )

x2 on what Randy said about tapering.  I'll just add that the length and need for tapering also depends on how much residual fatigue you have built up as a result of training.  If you have been training a lot and are feeling beat up, taper more.  You can also tapering differently in the three sports.  I don't swim enough, and as a result, I generally am not carrying a lot of fatigue in the swim.  I will often therefore not taper the swim, or taper it very little.  (Setting aside Randy's joke, which refers to the fact that I often don't taper at all -- but that's a strategic move, not a tactical one.  If you are carrying fatigue and you want to perform as well as possible, taper.)

Good luck to all racers!

I am in the middle of a 2 week straight stretch at work.  Struggling to keep up the training volume but am doing the best I can with what I have.  No pool this week.  Little crises around the house including one of our air conditioners breaking down, only $2000 to fix!  Water damage to our ceilings, $13K, thank goodness for insurance. My youngest is now getting invisilign braces.  Never ends!!!

Running in the rain - I have a hard time getting out to do it, but once out there I do enjoy it.  If it's fairly warm out, I love how the rain cools me down.  Running in cooler temps with rain is awesome if I have a 20 min hot shower waiting for me, followed by hot cocoa and my fireplace.

Due to limited training time this weekend, I plan to get on my bike trainer for some high intensity spin sessions, and hopefully get a long run done as well.  Jim

Jimmy-I'm with you on the unexpected expenses....seems like there are always some popping up.  Our week included $500 car repair and $300 computer repair.  Not quite on your level but geez! Keep getting it done when you can. Have a good weekend!

Mark, I picked up a Trinity a few years back.  Like you, I played mandolin and drooled over the octaves for a long time.  Now it is my "go to" instrument for sessions as it works well for both melody and rhythm.  I've been really happy with the Trinity... bought it just to try it out figuring if it stuck I'd eventually upgrade, but never felt the need.  What kind of mandolin do you have?  Mandos are great for air travel :-)  Any particular style of music you play?

Okay, off for a morning run before a 2 hour training seminar.

Stu

I've heard lots of good things about the Trinity.  I play a Breedlove Quartz OF and an Eastman 315.  I mostly play the Eastman nowadays b/c the neck is thinner and chopping is easier.  I tell myself I should only have one but, you know, MAS :-)

I find mandolins are much like bicycles. The correct number to own is always N+1.

As far as musical styles, I picked it up thinking it would be a good Irish music instrument. I play mostly Bluegrass and Old Time b/c those are the most common styles for mando.  I never listened to Bluegrass before playing mando so it was, and still is, new to me.

Are you on the cafe?

I had an eventful birthday today. Spent the day in Houston at ART, foot massage, and shopping. On the way home my son called to tell me that my father-in-law was admitted to the hospital with heart attack symptoms. We've been up at the hospital since 3. They finally discharged FIL around 9 this evening. None of the tests show any indications of him having a heart attack. I don't really trust our local hospital but my in-laws seem to like them. The hospital told him it was vertigo. Which given he had numbness on his left side, clammy feeling, dizzy and almost passed out seems a bit like heart attack symptoms to me. I've had vertigo for years without half of those symptoms. We're just thankful that he is (supposedly) okay.

I guess today was another sign of getting older. Once your kids are old enough to move out then it is time to start taking care of your parents.

Rene - Happy Birthday and I am glad everything turned out ok.

Its almost time to go to bed but I am so awake its not even funny. I always get nervous the night before a Tri ... ! I think I put the time and effort in and now its time to beat me crummy 3 hours 11 minutes from two months ago. I put in the time and I am way better prepared than I was two months ago.

On a side note ... packet pickup today was at a bike shop that I had never been to. On our way there we drove through some neighborhoods that I believe you need to be a pro athlete or brain surgeon to be able to afford those houses or should I say Villas! So when I got to the bike shop and walked in I knew I live in the wrong area. None of the products had price tags ... NONE ... not even the Honey Stinger Vanilla Waffles .... it was insane. I believe I fell in love at that store but my wife grabbed me by my feet and pulled me back down to earth! :-

I think I will wait a few more months, go their and get Retul fitted for this beautiful 2012 Quintana Roo Seduza! What a beauty!

Anyway, good luck to everyone else who is racing tomorrow. I will post the results as soon as I get some time tomorrow.

Good Night!
