Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed When I do get the time, I'll catch up on the readings and race reports. Past week I've been battling tummy troubles. I would be cramping, not feeling really well, etc. I did get in a trainer ride on a day that I felt good, then I felt bad the next day. Waited a few more days, and did a short 30 min ride, I couldn't wait to get off the bike. Then I decided to do a tandem ride with a friend on Sunday because the cramping went away, but I still felt bloated, heavy. The last 5 miles (this was SUPER easy, flatish 26 miles, and Z1-2), was really painful. Then I realize that it's because I'm bending at the abdomen area, and cycling, so it's "jiggling" the intestines and whatnot. UGGGGGGGH! So, I am going to try to do a couple rides this week in the trainer and see how I do before Saturday's ride up Mt. Potosi. if I have to bag it, and just turn around (avoid Mt. potosi), I'll be fine with it. All the money is donated for Pedal to the Medal (Special Olympics), so I'm not disappointed. I signed up for Pumpkinman HIM Relay....guess who's doing the bike! I have the hardest leg because of all the climbing, plus the last 9 miles climb with over 1000' of climbing!! I'm really looking forward to that. I have a month and half, so I'm not worried. I just want to get my tummy troubles over with. Meanwhile, with the downtime, I feel like I'm in a slump, icky, fat, just bleh. I'll get over it, and get back into cycling in no time. Meanwhile, I'll start catching up on posts!! |

I hope you get feeling better DJ! I know you would rather be riding than dealing with that!! I wondered if you would get a bike specific computer to replace your 305. Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed DJ -- feel better....that doesn't sound fun! I treated myself to the Garmin 500 for my birthday this year..I love it! It's just so easy to use and upload. I like how easy it is to customize the info/pages. I'm thinking about switching to the Garmin 10 for next season -- I have the forerunner 405 but it's so twitchy! Almost all my races it goes dead or berserk for a good part -- doesn't like any water/humidity coming near it. Shaking the dust off IM and headed to the pool for an easy 2000m this am. A little boring but good to start getting back to it. |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Way to go Becky!!! It's amazing to me that you can function well in the heat & humidity!! It's been terrible here, & I spend my training focusing on cooler weather! Jamie--how did your race go? DJ-hope your stomach is better!! That's one of my concerns for IMWI. Hey all- busy over here with school & soccer starting, my daughters birthday last Thurs, & getting everything ready for IMWI, this Sunday!! I'm alternating between "OMG I'm doing this!!!" (super excited) & "OMG I'm doing this!!!" (super nervous). Right now the super excited is winning out. I think I finally found success seat wise! (Selle Italia Diva Gel Flow) the fitter was hoping with the adjustments, we could make my other seat work, but it was not the case. I've been plagued with flat tires the last couple weeks (10 maybe). The good news is I've got complete confidence in my tire changing abilities! The bad news is I've spent a fortune on tubes, CO2, & tires. Including buying a brand new pair ofContinential 4000s, only to have to replace one if them after a 10 days. Oh well! Regarding Garmins, I have the 310xt. I really like it for the info it provides on the bike & run. I agree with Ken though, it's got a lot of features I don't know about or use yet. I'm always asking Kathleen questions about it! It is a little bulky on my wrist, but that's more of a personal issue with not liking to carry anything while running! |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Hi All! I am enjoying my IM recovery time, though I did catch a head cold that is lingering...I guess that happens with a compromised immune system! I'm just happy I didn't get sick during training. I managed two 40 mile bike rides this weekend, and though I could tell my legs and cardio are still in recovery, I felt really good. Also finally got a deep tissue massage, and I'm happy to say that I did not have too much lingering tightness or soreness from the race. Going to the pool for a swim tonight, running for the first time since the race tomorrow morning, then getting my tattoo tomorrow evening! So I'll have to take a little time off, whatever is recommended, to let that heal. I'll post pics when it's done. Also, I know I already posted my race report, but here is my post-race blog. It is VERY long, longer even than my usual posts, which I know are quite lengthy. But if you have a rainy afternoon, here you go... http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-recap.html And for those who are getting ready for your first IM, I found so much great information online, including YouTube videos about preparing your bike and gear bags, that I created my own. So here's what I did for my gear bags: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjsrDzdBsXg Happy training all! |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Well, my first foray into the longer distance went fairly well. It was a mile swim, 40 mile bike, and 10 mile run, which I realize is NOTHING to you ironmen and women out there, but was very long for this sprinter. I was definitely a bit undertrained (my HIM isn't until Oct 27th), so I decided to approach the bike VERY conservatively. My plan was to watch my HR and stay in Zone 3, and I stuck with the plan, even though it meant watching all the competition blow past me early in the bike leg. I also stuck very carefully to my nutrition plan (which has been a big challenge) and that went well. I finished the bike feeling really good and even though the run was hot I stayed pretty comfortable pouring water on myself at the aid stations and had a fantastic run. So, I executed the plan and finished with a big smile on my face. Now in hindsight...I feel like I paced the bike TOO conservatively and I certainly finished well back from where I usually do. Usually I really attack the uphills but my HR shoots way up, so I backed off a lot during this race. I have 8 weeks until my real HIM, but won't have any opportunity to ride the course prior to race day. How do you pace the bike leg in your half ironman??? Jaime |

They will tell you to stay out of the pool for a couple of weeks, maybe 3. Otherwise just keep it dry with an ointment like aquaspere over it. I am glad to hear you are recovering well!! I just got back from my ever 2 or 3 week deep tissue massage. It helps with the IT and shoulder issues as well as the recovery. |

One question (and obviously it may depend greatly on weather and when one finishes), but what does one typically put in the morning clothes bag for after the race? Like sweat pants to just throw on over or do people completely change into street clothes? Thanks, Todd |

I think you just keep pushing the effort on your long rides to see how you feel with a transition run. With another 8 weeks of training, 6 if you take out the taper, you should have some opportunities, but going from 40 to 56 is not a huge jump and if you feel you had some left in the tank you need to use that knowledge to your advantage. Congrats on the race! |

Thanks, Todd Depending on the forcast, but I just have my wife bring a hooded sweatshirt and if warranted, warm up pants. Then I wait till I get back to where I am staying to clean up. One thing to keep in mind when packing for a fall race (or late summer) is that things don't always go according to plan or schedule. Never a bad idea to have a cycling jacket in the bike special needs bag or a long sleeve running shirt in the run special needs bag. I needed the shirt in FL as it cooled off faster than I expected, even though my race went fine. In 2008 I had a cycling jacket in my room, but the weather called for only a low percent chance of a late afternoon shower. It started raining during the swim and never stopped till after 9. |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Great job, Jaime! That should give you some confidence for your A race. I would think if you felt like you could push it more on the bike, then go ahead and do so, especially during a long brick training day. That will give you an idea of how you'll feel coming into the run. But great job on the race! Todd, I didn't have to use the morning bag much because I just handed it off to my husband, and my hotel was right at the finish line. But if I could not get to my hotel immediately, I would have put dry shoes (whatever you find comfortable after a race) and loose, dry clothes in there. And I would expect it would be based on weather and what the temperature might be like at the finish. In Louisville, it was still hot when I finished, but I got the chills when I was done and took a while to warm up (it took a hot shower, coffee, and wearing a long shirt for a little bit before I was warm). I think the most helpful peace of mind information I incorporated from others' suggestions was (1) using some brightly colored identifier (I used yellow duct tape) on the top of the bags (I wrote my number on mine) to make it easy for volunteers to find, and also it helped me to know they handed me the correct bag because I saw my tape at the top, and (2) I used small zip lock bags with my number on them to separate the smaller items in my bags into categories (food in one, lube in another, extra stuff if needed in another), and since my number was on them, if something fell out while volunteers were moving bags around it would be easy for them to return it to the correct bag. Hope this helps! |

Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Jamie - you're definitely headed in the right direction. Just keep working on the bike...easy, but push yourself out of the comfort zone for small intervals...just to see how it feels. You got plenty of time. Gear bags- I did the same thing as Becky ...put food in one small ziploc, vaseline/chamois cream in another...makes it much easier to find things. It is a completely different experience from other distances...having just a 2x2 space but all your stuff is laid out. You have to try to mentally focus on what you need in grab it out of this bag. Volunteers were really great about asking what I needed and getting it out while put on my shoes, etc.... Jealous, but content to sit Chattanooga out this year. After much debate - decided to hold off on signing up for another 140.6 till I know if we're moving to Cali or not. Figure there's plenty of really good races here in the Northeast that doesn't require early signups (looking at Patriotman, Mussleman and possible full at Cedar Point) and if we do move...well that's whole other area of racing! |

Why were you getting flats? I have Continental 4000s as well and I've used Vittoria Rubino III. I have found that I had super tiny wire in one of the tire, and the other was a tiny thorn. There's always a reason why there's flats. Have you done the find the hole in the tube and find the source in the tire? Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQU5Na9asiM. I tried Selle Italia Diva Gel Flow for a while, until the leather started to show defects within a couple weeks, so I returned it (I was actually very shocked my LBS was willing to take it back). It was nice and okay, but just slightly too hard for me. I now have Selle Italia Ldy Gel Flow (I don't know why they removed the A in Lady), and I LOVE it. If you have wider sitbones, this is PERFECT. It's pretty wide, compared to the others, but it has a little bit larger sit area, so there's room. |

Veteran 385 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I know that I have discussed my energy issues on here but I wanted to give you an example... Last week was a recovery week. Few shorter workouts etc. I went out for a run on Thursday and felt horrible. I had to walk at around 3 miles for a little bit and cut the workout short. The rest of the weekend felt like I could nap all day and was just tired. Monday I went for a swim and still felt weak and yesterday during the day I felt OK. Last night when I got home I went for a run. Planned 8 miles and as soon as I took off I felt like it would be a great day. Ran 8 miles in what for me around my neighborhood is a fast 8:42 mile (somewhat hilly area). It is strange to feel such an energy low for three days and then be on it the next. Life and training gets interesting this week. My son starts soccer and he did not want to play unless I coached. So I am coaching for the next 9 weeks which will tie up Saturday mornings for the build up period to my race... Oh well, got to take care of the family first. I am thinking of doing double workouts on Saturdays. So I can go out for 40 or 50 miles, be back for the soccer game and then go for a 2 hour run after lunch or something... Any thoughts? |

Have you tried tracking your nutrition (not training specific, but every day meals/snacks) and your sleep patterns for a couple of weeks? Maybe a change in diet or the make up of your meals, higher protein on good days or something like that is having an impact. The amount of sleep may make a difference as well, not to mention caffiene consumption. I would track it for a couple of weeks and see if you notice any patterns forming. As far as your Saturday double discussion, I guess the question would be; what is the purpose? Don't get me wrong, there is training value in both sessions, but typically if I had 2 work outs in a day, I would have a 2 hour bike and maybe an hour swim or run later in the day. But on the weekends, it would be a long bike, with a short (ok coach told me I have some 80/8's coming so maybe not real short) transition/brick run. The soccer game would eliminate the run off the bike value. Also, what are you planning on doing Friday and Sunday? My point is, are these going to be your long bike and long run for the week? If so, you may want to consider a plan B and have both sessions on Saturday be the bike and find another time to get the 2 hour run in on another day of the week. Otherwise, go ahead and try it and keep the effort reasonable so you don't have too much of a recovery time problem. |

I think I did, my browser timed out after hitting submit, but I got both an e-mail confirmation and a notice from my CC that the charge went through. There seems to be some confusion on the speed of the sell out and the apparent crash of the server at Active (which is not an unusual occurrence for these things!)The Challenge event could offer some interesting competitions, but I still think if REV3 isn't giving WTC the push then I don't know if Challenge can. |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I can't believe Chattanooga sold out so quickly! I am considering another IM for 2015 and thought that would be a good one, but now of course it looks like it would be really hard to get in! Still will consider it, but wow... Got my tattoo yesterday and I LOVE it! The main part on my outer ankle is awesome, and I have the swim, bike, run figures continuing around my ankle in a band. Those are solid black and look great, though they don't show up very well in the photo. The tattoo artist said I should stay out of the pool for 3 weeks--does that sound right? I thought it would only be 2, but of course I don't want to ruin it. I think I'm going to do another tri in October, an "intermediate" that has a 1.24 mile swim, 38 mile bike (somewhat hilly, in Clermont, FL), and a 15K run. Is anyone here doing Augusta 70.3 this month? More than 20 people from my tri club are going, so my husband and I are going to make the trip up there to spectate and support them. Let me know if any of you will be there so I can cheer for you, too! Finally, my uncle put together a video/slide show of my IM experience, it's cool...see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LALbeUsg30 Happy training! We haven't had a lot of rain, so the debris that would normally get washed off the road, has been building up on the shoulders. I guess I've been doing my part to "collect" it in my tires. I always find something in them that caused the flat. A couple lessons I learned...First, don't just look on the outside of the tire, but the inside too! I got one flat 5 min after the other that way. I had pulled out a small piece of wire, thinking that was it. Turns out there were 2 more pieces I didn't see until I turned the tire inside out. Second, if it's a good size tear/hole, put a patch over it on the inside of the tire. When you inflate the tire, a tiny bit can squeeze into the hole and cause a flat. Jamie-Great job on your race!! I knew you could do it. Ken-Way to pull the trigger on IMChoo!! Glad you got in! Leaving today for WI after school. Trying to get all packed and squeeze in a quick 30 min run before. Hoping to me some or all of you doing IMWI! Are you all going to the Athlete Dinner (I'm going, but without my family)? Looking at the race calendar, I forgot IceMan was doing the race too, but he hasn't been around for a while. Looks like we've got a couple more people racing other races this weekend too---Good Luck!! |
