Ok - it has finally happened and I am stoked. Tonight after dinner the fam went to the pool. When we got there - my eldest son asked how long a swim was for a sprint triathlon. I told him and he said he wanted to do it. Being the supportive dad, I told him that people sometimes do plans that take weeks to work people up to a sprint distance swim but he said he wanted to try. So, he dove in and swam 400 yards! Then when he was done he asked how far I had gone (500) and proceded to swim another 5 lengths so he could beat me.

As we were walking home - he asked if we could do a 50 mile bike ride so he could get his 50 miler award. Scouts and tri - it doesn't get any better. Then it did - he asked if he could get a BT account. Guess what were gonna do next!

Awesome!
You pulled the trigger. Way to go. "So it begins..."

Brutal! Hope you feel better soon. Congrats on making it back to the 100's! I will get back there next month. Way to lead the way.

Even though it is the night before school starts, Eric (my oldest) begged me to go to the pool. Even though I begged him to check out a plan - he insisted on swimming another 575 today (He swam 550 last night). What? Not following a plan? I wonder if it is genetic?

Proud of him - in two nights he has swum a ton!

Thanks I think I'll put it on my bike like Jens Voigt and his "shut up legs" mantra

I need a little accountibility...

I'm at home with my youngest - so I haven't been able to get in my ride today. I would go after my wife gets home - but my iphone broke so it's off to the apple store I go. Then I have to make dinner. And then I pledge to sneak in a short ride. No reward other than the ride itself.

However - I'll be sucking down a warm coors light if I fall short.

It's hump day - how is everyone's week going? Anyone racing in the next few weeks?

Last year I for some reason got sent a bike catalog from some super schmancy shop in NYC. It was pretty funny- all of the bikes were leaned up against couches, in the kitchen etc. My husband and I were joking that when you couldn't afford a garage or closet I guess you did need a pretty bike. How they got my name or thought I bought really high end stuff is beyond me.

I lucked out! When I went to the Apple Store I was helped by the same person who had helped me last year when I killed two phones in a week due to water damage (it was brutal ) But he wasn't able to get the phone to work and luckily there was no water damage so I got a new phone since it was still under warranty! Yea. So I am sending you along my good Iphone karma. I hope you can make it that thing is going to be sweet.

Nice work on the ride. Confession time: I still don't own a cell phone.
Now that I got that off of my chest I didn't make it this morning as I was still in recovery mode. Tomorrow, one way or another, I'm getting a w/o in. I may be lifting and running, or just running, depending on what wife does. (we swap days, but she sometimes is up quite a bit with our newborn, so it puts small wrench in the schedule)
w/o or bust tomorrow.

What? No cell phone? That's old school. But not having to pay that bill (mine is almost $250 a month for our family's phones) means you can buy a lot more beer.

Better get that workout in tomorrow or it's Coors light for you

Seriously - hope your first week at school is going well.

Been a little quiet on the forum here lately. Hope everyone is doing well! I'm enjoying day 4 of the sabbatical. I did have to interview for a substitute job but other than that I've gotten to spend the day with my daughter Kate. She loves to run and just keeping up with her is a workout in itself.

Gonna get out there for a quick run tonight.

I've got two questions for the group:

1) I noticed that when I run my left knee doesn't stay inline with my thigh and calf. Instead when my foot strikes the ground, my left knee moves about 2 inches to the left away from my centerline (the right knee, which doesn't hurt) stays in line). Does that make any sense? I've got to think that this movement has got to exacerbate my ITB problems. I've got to think that its because the muscles in my legs aren't keeping it steady. Any ideas on what leg exercises I could do to build strength in order to stabilize the knee?

2) I've been rolling my ITB for about 1 minute on each leg each daybut it doesn't seem to get any better. I asked DH (a former member of the group who's got another 100 mile ultra marathon coming up. The guy is hardcore and knows his stuff) and he said I could really throw caution to the wind and grind away at it. Has any one else taken this approach and if so - how long did it take to get relief? Today I'm going to try it for 5 minutes on each leg and see how it goes. I've got an off day tomorrow so I'll have a little time to recover.

I was having some hip tensor issues before last Sunday's triathlon, so I went for a 90 minute sports massage. She spent probably 40 minutes working on my shoulders, and it hurt, in a good way. I could feel the knots releasing. Personally, using the foam roller, I've spent 10 minutes working on hamstrings and quads and calves. I keep at it until it stops hurting. And, if you're doing it right, it will hurt, but it's a good hurt, feeling the muscles release.

Besides rolling, are you doing any ITB specific stretches? I'm religious about mine before I run.

Question...What do you all know about swim skins? I have a race in October and I won't know until the race if the water temp. will allow wetsuits. (By the way, what is the criteria on this?)..Anyway, I don't own a suit and am wondering if a swim skin might be appropriate down here in the south in early fall. Just don't know how to plan for this. Thanks!

I trust what DH has said (mind you he has a very very solid base in already) but as for grinding away at a nagging injury I would solve the problem rather than make it worse. You have the same injury luck as me and I don't think I would take the chance when a week or so of self rehab can get me back on the road. Just remember how beast he is and the crazy fact that he runs with barefoot guys in the snow
As for IT exercises and such. I do the foam roll and stretch bit but Bobby tried telling me to do some strength work and I wouldn't listen. Well it flared up real bad so I added in 3 simple things...squats, side leg lifts, and single leg bridges. No equipment needed and a full set will take less than 10 minutes. I crawl out of bed and do one set then before I climb back into the sack at night I do another. It may be mental but after 7-10 days it's damn near gone. Foam rolling is all well and good on its own but as I understand it if the muscle imbalance is still there the problem won't go away just be masked, you need a healthy balance of both. It costs nothing to try so give me a solid week of honest effort, 2 sets in the morning and 2 sets at night. It's worth 20 minutes each day to fix this for good.

Thanks Charles - I don't have a lot of knots (or at least I don't think I do). My problem is that I am just so damn tight. (I've been told by trainers and by my massage therapists that I am the tightest person they have worked on) So, the pain doesn't go away the longer I keep rolling - or it hasn't yet. Last night I rolled for 5 minutes on each ITB and it hurt during the entire time. I don't feel any added pain this morning so I don't think I hurt anything by doing it. Based upon what a bunch of people are telling me - I just need to keep increasing the time until I loosen up. I've been having ITB issues since high school CC and I would be willing to roll for the rest of my life if it meant getting rid of them forever. Onward!

Bill - Yep... I do a bunch of stretches but I think I may need to change the way I go about stretching. I usually stretch at the end of a workout but I find that sometimes I have to stop 5 minutes into a run because my knee starts to hurt. I wonder if doing some light stretching before heading out the door would diminish some of the friction that I experience during my run (my ITB band rubs against scar tissue left behind from when I was hit by a car). I could always stretch again once I got home.

To be honest - part of my problem is that I not religious about stretching in that I tend to stretch a lot when I'm sore but not when I am feeling ok. I might need to change that... I'm not 15 anymore!

Alex - Thanks for the advice and the challenge. I will do the squats, side leg lifts, and single leg bridges while waiting for my coffee to brew in the morning. That way I won't wake Heidi and and hopefully it will make the waiting for the water to heat up go faster.

First off - thanks for all the help. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Yesterday, I booked the hotel rooms for Mount Tremblant. Holy cow - $1450 for 4 nights! That doesn't even include the change for the minibar

That amount of money + not having a job + a fear of failure make me really nervous. What I keep telling myself is 1) It's about the experience. Even if something happens that prevents me from finishing the race, I need to value all the other things that go into the experience each day and 2) that when my head hits the pillow after completing the IM, I will say to myself right before falling asleep, "It was worth it". Its a nice dream - I intend to make it happen.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

PS - I invited someone to join our group. She is from Sweden (think of all the beers she could suggest) and she is training for a sprint in order to raise money for charity. Hope y'all don't mind.

I'm right there with you. I've fallen off the wagon across the board lately. We got a dog this month, and that took a huge bite out of our finances, along with a bunch of other stupid stuff. My run mileage has sucked this month, and I'm 7 weeks from a marathon, with my longest run to-date being 14 miles. Next weekend I"m set to volunteer at IMWI, to register for IMWI 2014, and that's a $650 bite in the rump too.

I have no motivation right now, and a sneaking suspicion that my weight's back over 190.

And after last week's nutrition failure, I'm a bit stung right now about getting back out there. I'm not sure if it's post-tri-season malaise, or what, but I'm just out of sorts right now, and it's not a fun experience.

Hi! Thanks for the invite!
My name is Nat, short for Nathalie. I live in Sweden but am originally from France and part of my heart is still in England where I lived for 8 years.

Family: a husband (sort of, not married... Yet) and a 9 year old son. We're getting a cat soon and a dog is on the cards in a couple of years

My story: done sports all my life but ones involving balls (soccer, european handball) or martial arts. Had to give up those games due to a bad knee. Not enough stability in it and I don't want to go through a big operation. So I have to choose less violent sports. Triathlon seemed like a good idea.

Qua mentionned that I am raising money for charity. Getting people to sponsor me for my race is a great way to make sure I go through with it. I have already 8 sponsors on my page, including some very good friends I don't want to let down. At the same time I am helping a cause I believe in. It's a win win situation. It's the 3rd time I do this (first 2 times were a 10k race and golf tournament).

Training: well, not so much at the moment. Had this idea about a month ago and did too much too soon and hurt myself. Hopefully it's nothing but I am getting it checked before I start again. Much slower this time, the race is in May next year, so plenty of time.

Beer: nothing beats a nice cold lager on a hot summer evening. Carlsberg is my favourite.

That's it for now, looking forward to exchanging with you!

Charles-

Hang in there. It will Ebb and Flow.

I spent the better part of 3 yrs. training like an oiled machine prior to this last season, where I was right there where your at right now. Just now pulling out of that. My point is that you will pull out of it. It may take some time, but hang in there and it will get better.
