Greg,

Glad your visit went well.  I hope you get good results when you go back for more testing.  We know that your training has to have helped you, it certainly can't have hurt.

What a weekend for the group!

Julie (aka triathlete passing on left) - awesome race report. I hope you at least high fived on the hill! lol to the other peeps. If you want to know what I'm talking about, read the report ;-)

Emerson, I knew I smelled a PR. Way to go speed demon!

Pam, just thinking about a mile of flip turns makes me dizzy. Incredible.

Hope everyone else is well.

Greg

Thanks Greg...now how is Stef? Still having headaches? how is the new treatment? I was at work Sunday and the stupid computers were down....I could not even get wireless..so, I had no way of calling you - your numbers were stored away so nicely in my messages...SORRY GREG!...I will catch up with you later this evening.... hope things are going ok...you need to work out, you hear me!?...Good for the miind! make sure to take some time for yourself! I PROMISE it will help you sort thru things and to keep your strenth and health up!!! best thing for you! so go boy! and tell Stef I love her and that I am praying for her.

You are an amazing guy....don't you ever forget that!! can't wait to mee the kiddo's! I have already begun to contact some potential sponsors...can you tell me who you already have so that I do not duplicate any! but do this in your time frame...do not go out of the way for this info..

Take care,

Julie

Thanks Julie. Honestly, things aren't good. Last week 2 friends died - 1 funeral was Sat and 1 tomorrow. When we left the Sat funeral, we had a call from her oncologist (on Saturday with his cell number). Stef's cancer has spread to her brain and we found out today her spine. They are stopping the trial and starting radiation. We'll know more about that tomorrow. They told us today she has realistically 6 months. If she were a normal stomach cancer patient with this much disease, she'd only have 3 months.  So now I'm trying to figure out the balance of taking care of my wife, taking care of my kids, taking care of me and somehow trying to earn a living. When I train I feel guilty because it's time I'm losing with her. Even though I know it's better for us both, each moment is precious. And the balancing act get worse (because of my caregiving load) before it gets better.

This Saturday I'm racing in a sprint, then we are having a party at our house (crawfish boil!!) Regardless of the bad stuff, you have to seize life when you can.

Greg

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GREG!!! have a great sprint! and hey I missed the memo on the party! have a great boil! I love crawfish! MMMMMMMMMM! have a bunch for me!!

Sorry to hear about Stef and how things have spread! hang in there and keep that chin up! you are an amazing guy and I hate to see that you have been hit so hard with all kinds of things lately! I will be praying for you and Stef!

can you send me your phone numbers again...I was a DUMB A$$ and deleted it!

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR RACE!!!

Greg,

You cannot be the man you want to be for Stef, your kids or yourself unless you are strong!!!  You need to breaks, you need the reflection time, you need the endorphins, you need your body to be the "platform" to launch everything you do.  There is a reason that on the airplane they say "put the mask on yourself first, then the child next to you."  You cannot help the child unless you are breathing!

You cannot help Stef if you are not at your best.  Fine, skip a race or two... but do NOT skip the exercise!!  There are martyrs and marathons.  On group burns at the stake, the other manages their energy and finishes the day....  You are a marathoner who wins, not a martyr.  Martyrs are forgiven, but they cannot help those they love.

Be the best you can be... then you can be the husband, father and provider you want to be.

We are all here for you my friend.  In our prayers...

Emerson

Hi guys,

Quick check in. (No time for glitter even.) I've got a lot of work this weekend. It's going to be another crazy week ahead.... I'm still hoping that by next weekend, that things at work will settle down a bit.

This "werk" stuff is really interfering with my working out. It's not doing much for my "life" either. (What life? <-- See? That's what I mean.)

Train on.

(Eric, good luck this weekend!)

<-- Oh yeah, and the Olympic Onion Rings did not win the April Challenge, as you can tell by my new(est) avatar.

So I need to put aside my Peep staring into the light. (Remember Carol Ann from the Poltergeist?) And I'll be sporting a flower for the month of May. ("April showers bring May flowers" was the penalty theme of the April challenge.)

Hey all,

Just popping in to say hello, then gotta start working on dem crawfish. Had an OK race this morning. Swim took a long time and I'm not sure why. It was like a wrestling match in the water today - I've never had to deal with that much congestion. Run was OK but still clearly a weak spot for me. Pleased with my bike ride and transitions. I figured I'd finish in 1:35 and did it in 1:36:XX. I'll post a full race report once I get my official splits. The coolest moment was at the awards ceremony. They gave an award to the person who came in last. It is a memorial award of a man (faithful volunteer to the event) who died of cancer recently. It was the Dr. John Doe Memorial Courage Award. She got some really nice things too - I saw her carrying out a brand new Saris bike rack and an armful of stuff. Stef and the kids were there cheering me on. We had several neighbors racing as well - good times.

Eric, was thinking about you as I was racing this morning. Can't wait to hear about the HIM!!

Here's my race report for CB&I. Sadly, someone lost their life at this race. Not sure what happened but Stephanie and kids saw them doing CPR on the guy. He later died at the hospital. Threads/news stories are posted in CoJ and Triathlon forums.

Race report link: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=113230

There's a also a link on my training logs to the race report.

Be safe all!

I'M ALIVE!!!  I feel ridiculously good.  I'm a little more sore today but still far less than what I would feel after my 4 previous half-marathons.  I spent almost the entire swim and bike in zone 1/low zone 2 to save energy for later.  The heat really did me in and I fought leg cramps thru the entire run, so I walked far more than I ran.  I think it's really sunk in that I just survived 6:32 of a brutal race.  A number of guys that I know who have done HIMs before DNF'd that race due to the heat.  I was halfway thru mile 1 and my left quad locked up solid.  It was painful and frustrating.  I spent a few minutes sitting in someone's driveway trying to loosen it up.  In hindsight, that may have been one of the best things to happen to me.  I had time to contemplate what it would mean to DNF my first two races of the year, particularly one where I had invested so much time and energy.  Once I started back, the idea of quitting never came up again.  The thought that I might get carried off the course crossed my head once or twice, but I never thought about stopping.  It was hot and brutal and I LOVED IT!!  I've got my 2nd HIM in November and I'll be looking forward to that one.  Friday night I sat out by the lake sweating the race and worrying but I slept great.  Sat morning I woke up feeling great, still nervous, but ready to go!

It's a tough day but I highly recommend it....as long as you're able to train well.  I needed to do some more long rides, particularly with brick runs afterwards, and I especially needed to have a better nutrition plan in place to address electrolytes.

Glad to be back and ready to start training again.
