I won't get to ride until the weekend (at least not at a time I can be outside), and by then the weather is supposed to have turned miserable again.  But for today, I got to run in shorts.  Sure, it was only 7C, but it was great.

Fred Doucette - 2011-02-17 10:36 AM Swim done today.

More bike intervals tomorrow. Maybe even outside?

I've got the day off tomorrow, planning to ride outside for the first time since sept or oct.  I'm excited

Did a threshold/tempo run at lunch today 1 WU, 5 tempo, 1 cd.  After a couple tries, I was finally was able to do the whole workout without stopping.  I've never had a problems with races since it's a much more controlled eating environment and much less time between waking up and racing for stuff to go wrong.  It seems in the extra hours before lunch, I don't control it well.  Limited my coffee this AM (boss commented on my 15 yawns during while we were talking) and did some protein in the early AM then mostly carbs and only a banana just before going.  Seemed to work well and I hit the 5 miles at a 6:17 pace like I wanted to.  Got a small side stitch with about 1.2 to go, but a couple deep breaths and a little pressure on it and it went away.

I rode outside today and it was so great to be outside.

Shoulders are still partly covered in snow and in places some islands of snow/ice are right where I'd ride.  It made me ride near the white line more than I like. With lots of puddles I found some new potholes from this harsh winter. Need to be pretty vigilant while riding to stay safe.

It was awesome to be outside riding. I hope to get out there again tomorrow.

My clothes and bike are a mess...glad to have my old tri bike I can ride on the crappy roads. Fit is pretty close to my Ordu.

So great to have warmer weather!!!  I can't believe I am planning a treadmill run tomorrow morning, ugh!, but I have to do it so early and don't really like running alone in the dark.

Going on vacation next week... excited but training volume will take a nosedive for I guess six days... will try to run a bit and find a pool.

Happy riding/ running outdoors Smile

I thought your big race was Eagleman? If it is, the I disagree, if you have other running races coming up sooner, then no I don't disagree at all.

It is.  I have an Oly 4/17 and Columbia in May before it.  I started with some vo2max intervals and threshold runs and making my long runs progressive under the advice from my coworker coach.  It was basically because I went on a run volume mission last fall and he suggested I start incorporating these type of efforts to avoid getting stale running lots and lots of slow miles, and because as i add in more bike and swim, time becomes an issue, so building past the 40-45 mpw slow isn't gonna happen.  So i'm on a plan leading up to the April Oly incorporating these into my runs.

Joe you are younger than me and your body can take more than mine, so take my advice as just that (an opinion).

Guy's like Wiky (Rob) run fast so easily that they can pull of 6:30 pace runs in Z2 I suspect. My guess is that pace for you is somewhere near the Friel Z4. Nothing wrong with Z4 work, but 5 miles of Z4 in Feb. is where *I* would end up doing more damage than good.

I am not telling you not to do it, but I was talking with my coach ( a 9:20 IM guy) He runs only very, very easy now (Z1) and yet races fast.

Lemme know your thoughts?
Well, I'm walking to the bar now, so I'll let you know what I come up with after a few pints

I rode outside today.  What a glorious day!  The last time I rode a rode bike was 3 Oct 2010.  So this was some what of a spiritual ride for me.  I had a few cross rides on my Fuji Cross Comp.

Went and visited my old friends Moores Mt, Winding Hill and Roundtop.  They are all just fine.  Stats seem low despite over 2100ft of climbing in 36 miles.  I tricked myself into a forced ez ride by detouring and sign seeing.  This I do admit I should have plan a slightly flatter route.

Here a pic from last years Savageman Tri in Deep Creek, MD.  It really shows the struggle in my endurance with the high iron levels.

btw I did this race with Fred.  He placed 3rd in his AG.

Congrats James!  Def easier to get two hours in outside rather than inside.  Why do you say your pic shows your struggle with high iron levels?  You look focused.

I struggled very badly at Savageman with HR and endurance, and in hind sight probable at IMLP.  This lead me to believe something was medically wrong with me.  Two a month later I was diagnose with high iron levels (around 500 (normal 175)).  Then Oct-Dec 2010 I had 5 pints of blood drawn to reduce the iron levels.  Jan 1st my levels were 185 and I start full training again.  Just the other day was another blood test to see if the iron levels are increasing.  If so the tap is on me.

Hope the test results come back in range.  Your training seems strong, so hopefully that's a good sign.

Fred interesting points about your ride outside today. Nice to feel strong and ahead of where you were last year. Riding outside to me feels like almost a different activity compared to CT rides.

Keeping power even on rolling terrain for intervals or racing is always challenging for sure. Looking at your VI for your intervals if they are long enough can be interesting.

For a second there I thought Fred had brought his bike to the dinner table

I got in a nice outside ride today too - about 47 miles.  Felt great - and RPE vs power was a lot different than inside.  I also can't keep power steady to save my life!  Ridiculously all over the map, I'd look down at be at 120% on an up or 55% on a down...very little in the middle.

For those that use power - how to you handle forced stops outside (or inside)?  My software (Raceday) includes all time, even if you stop the unit (like at a light, to go to the bathroom etc) because Dr. Skiba claims this better represents what is actually happening to your body and counts zeros for power, speed, hr etc and skews the averages (if the stop is over 10 min he actually divides it into two workouts though).  It does let you delete the stopped time after and it will recalculate if you so choose.
