Qua17 - 2012-06-19 6:10 AM Gentlemen - I'm gonna pose this question to our other mentor group - but I wanted to get DH's take as well...  Yesterday, on my long ride, I wore bike shoes for the first time. A pair of decent middle of the line Specialized bike shoes... And my feet hurt so bad I could hardly walk when I got off the bike. Plus, each time I pedaled, I felt the same type of pain on the outside of my right foot that felt just like PF.  Not good.  Have you ever felt this and do you think it will do away the more I ride?

I have no experience in bike shoes as I still, and always will now, have the cages on my mid 80's road bike.  It's pretty cherry.  I would think it has to do with fit, or possibly how shoe clips on and pulls foot as you pedal?  But, I have never gotten foot pain on ride, so I cannot offer any advice except maybe to drink afterwards to dull the pain a little.Wink  It seems libral amounts of alcohol can cure most pains temporarily.

Hey Kevin, does your bike have a banana seat?Wink

You should throw out an email to all your buddies that you are looking for a roadbike/tri bike. I did and ended up with my 14 yr old Carbon trek. Not the best gearing for hills but still pretty nice. I call it my Barney bike as it is a lovely purple!

David, not sure what to say on the shoes. I defer to the cycle master Darren for that question!

Saw a pic of a guy who did IM in Kona on a single gear 70's bike with ape hangers and a banana seat colored in tie -dye.  Pretty hardcore.  Probably had a styrafoam cooler full of Raineer instead of going to water stations.  Looked for the pic, but couldn't find it.

Gee, I didn't know where to post this, so I found this group, and thought I'd share it here.  Had brother in law #2 over for sliders and mirror pond (Deschutes Pale Ale, So Yummy.)  When all of a sudden, I found some Fireball on my shelf.  Priceless.

This may hamper my 3 week weight loss streak, Maybe.  Big weigh in tomorrow.

Qua17 - 2012-06-18 7:10 PM Gentlemen - I'm gonna pose this question to our other mentor group - but I wanted to get DH's take as well...  Yesterday, on my long ride, I wore bike shoes for the first time. The PF pain sounds like some flexibility or strengthening issue. But not sure it isn't caused by the shoes. I have a theory that any muscle pain caused by shoes is pointing out weaknesses in your feet and your feet therefor must be strengthened. Of course more reasonable people just go and buy shoes that don't hurt. And bike shoes are different than running shoes. I think there is far less load on your feet on a bike than on your feet when you run. Not sure what you mean by your feet hurting when you get off the bike. After a long ride my feet always hurt. Sometimes they go numb. I think part of it can be helped by flexing your ankle as you ride as opposed to leaving it in one plane. Concentrate on circles instead of pistons will help that. Also, these exercises should help. http://foothealth.about.com/od/exercisefeet/ss/FootExercises.htmbut man they take up time to do. But, your feet shouldn't hurt that much. I would get back to the store, put your bike on a trainer, and try out all the shoes.

First off - just want to give Kevin props for using the word Cherry in his last post - as in It's pretty cherry... love that expression.

Went to the bike shop for my fitting today!  I've read in several different forums about how important a good fitting is and now I can see why.  The guy spent more than 2 hours with me.  When I first hopped on my bike - the pain in my hip was a 4 out of 10 - (no pain in the shoes yet).  By the time he finished, the soreness was gone.  He was able to do a bunch of things to let me ride a little more like how I walk - like a duck.  I hope to take the bike out tomorrow and see if it feels as good in real life as it did on the trainer.  Hopefully - the foot will feel better as well.  Time will tell.

Tomorrow morning is one of my "stretching mornings" that I do when I stay at home with the kids so my wife can go to the gym... I will be sure to do those exercises Darren.  Thanks for thinking of me!

Until tomorrow...

Morning Gentlemen!  Weighed in this morning and lost another 2 lbs for a total of 79.6.  I am 183.  I figure I have 13 more pounds in me to get out of me.

I need two things (and this is my rant) - 1) People to stop telling me that I don't have any more to lose.  Drives me fricking nuts.  Even my wife chimed in this week.  I'm getting thinner - but there is no doubt that I'm not where I want to be yet.  I don't want to nor can I look like a guy on a men's health cover, I simply want to know that I have finish this race before I stop. 2)I'm a competitive guy.  While I don't think I will ever match Kevin's speed, or Darren's distance, or Thor's proclivity for Molsen, I'm focused on "winning"my part of the weight loss challenge.  I'm hoping this goal will allow me to be good as I head off on a month love vacation later this week.

One more thing - As I head to Michigan on Saturday, I plan on driving through Canada and stopping along the way at what Beer Advocate calls the best beer store in Ontario.

Darren and Thor - can I get a top ten list of Canadian beers I should be on the look out for... Here are my favorites - IPA, Saison, Lager, Wheat... I don't like Malty but I love to try new things.  Your suggestions?

You are a weight loss machine!  Keep on truckin' and the speed and distance will come too.  I think if you could learn to drink LaBatt's, you could at least rival Thor's Love for an ice cold Molsen.  I hear it's the favorite of Eastern Canada.

.3 lbs this week.  down to 175.5. It's a loss, but not a big one.  It's like catching  a 5 inch bull head when fishing for 4 lb trout.

About the only Molson(with an "o") I drink is Pilsner and that is usually after cutting the grass!

Think of the comments by people who say you don't need to lose anymore as compliments. It is easier to say you don't need to lose anymore over "geez you were a fat pig last year" Smile

Beers to try.  This one is highly regarded:

Thanks for beer suggestions. I will make a list. Thanks also for the supportive comments about the - you don't have any more weight to lose... Issue. I need to let it go. It's complicated and I don't want to get into it - but lets just say that my wife and I need to break the cycle of enabling each other when it comes to our lack of health.

One more cool detail about the weight. Today is my 14th wedding anniversary. I weigh today what I weighed then and it's only the second time that I've been this thin. Ok brag session over. Back to work on packing for our move.

David, I hope you bought yourself some new tri shorts for your wife for your anniversary? Happy belated 14th! Sounds like it has been quite a change in your family from your 13th!

Lucky bastard, summer holidays! Don't enjoy too many beers over the summer or I will be collecting $20 from you!

Kevin, after doing a triathlon, I would just about drink any ice cold beer...well not coors light but most!

On a positive note, the race I am doing mid July will have beer at the finish line!

It was my first Oly last year in which I clocked in at 2:53...Is it reasonable to expect 2:45 this year with more training/experience? 8 minutes is probably an extra 2 beer for me as they ran out last year!

I don't see why not. I imagine you probably could make up tons of times in the transitions, unless you had that darn to an art last year.

So, its like a beer buffet at the finish?

Howdy all,

I just sent BigDH a quick message asking if it was ok to post here.  I guess in hindsight I could have just posted.  But thank for the quick response

NAME: Chris

STORY: This is my third year of triathlon.  And as I was explaining to Darren I really lost the luster for the bike and want to focus mostly on running after first half iron in Sept.  I plan to use swimming as cross training.

Family Status: Married to an understanding wife who stares at me with a hairy eyeball when I mention "marathon".  Last year the Philadelphia marathon had two fatalities.  Once I get through one she will be okay.  She wants to run some 5k and 10k with me and our first 5K is in July.  We have 3 dogs.

CURRENT TRAINING: Logs are up to date always.  I am not really following a plan per se, I just swim bike and run as much as possible.  I have been floundering and wishy washy this year especially with the bike but I have been running pretty consistently since I started all this.  My plan is to swim 3x, run 3x and bike 2x a week.  My longest run week to date has been 24 miles (38K).  By the half Iron I plan to be around 30 miles (48K).

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I did my first half mary as a trail run and loved it.  My legs were pretty fried as my longest technical trail run was 8 miles and half of that was just gravel.  I am doing 2 sprints, 1 Oly and my first half in Sept.

WEIGHT LOSS: I lost 40 lbs since I started.  I am currently 200 lbs and would like to get to 185 for my half iron.  My wife is vegan and I do all the cooking so I end up with a plant based diet about 90% of the time.

GOALS: I want to run for fun and run a lot.  After Sept my plan is to run 6x a week and eventually baring any unforeseen injuries, contingencies or pregnancy's run my first Ultra in the late spring of '13.

FAVORITE BEER: By volume it would be Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale.  By choice is Racer 5 and Lagunitas IPA.  Although I don't really like brown ales, Rouge makes a Hazelnut Brown Nectar that is pretty amazing.

Planned races from now until my first Ultra:  I don't really have a plan except for after the half iron I will pick up a beginner marathon plan and start somewhere in the middle ending on "race".  If it is too taxing, I'll scratch the mary, drop back and punt.  What are your thoughts?

2012

July 15: Sprint

July 21: 1 mile ocean swim

Aug 12: Oly

Sept 8: first half

Oct 14: Sprint

Nov 18: Philadelphia Marathon

2013

April 27: Trail marathon or trail triple crown (1/2, 10K, 5K)

May 19th:  Dirty German endurance run 50K or 50M - Trail run and appears to have very little gain

Thank you.  Its good to be here.  Sadly my friend I do not watch hockey.  I am somewhat of an insult to my gender in that I do not watch many sports.  However, I am hoping to tune in and catch some of the Olympic trials this weekend.

A better transition, faster bike, and all the run training leading to a stronger finish will shave time off.  8 min. is an awesome goal, and worth 10 beers.  Go for it.

PS: Flyers or Penguins fan?

Chris-

Reading through your bio made me think of two things.  1)  You and all the posters here are very similar in many things, you'll fit right in here.  2)  Your not Canadian, so we now have a 3/2 advantage over our neighbors from the north.

Welcome aboard.

Howdy all,

Sweet.   Miles over Kilometers for now.  Any good Canadian IPA's?  I swear I am not breaking balz.  I am genuinely curious.

BigDH - 2012-06-22 8:34 AM In other news I just had Chris, who is another IPA loving amateur athlete with a bit of weight to lose, send me a message saying he wanted to join our merry band. I thought about doing a vote but then figured you would have heard enough at "IPA loving". So I told him to pop in and introduce himself.

You are correct, Sir.  God knows, we don't need any more Molson guzzling canuks!
