I have been down in Texas for 2 weeks now and I still don't get how people can ride in the heat. I went out today for 85 miles in 92F heat. And the wind, it is relentless. Give me the cold any day.

But, with that rant out of the way, I am enjoying my time down here. I am running and cycling to my heart's content. And swimming in outdoor pools is another cool thing. I have strolled the beach at South Padre Island, gone golfing 4 times, been down to Nuevo Progresso, Mexico to shop. Took in a rodeo/livestock show and marvelled at how cheap everything is compared to Canada. One more week of this then I head home to deal with the melting snow/flooding. Hopefully this training down here will equate to some good early season fitness when I get home.

A big training weekend for me and I am super happy.  I did Master's swim on Saturday followed by a long run,  and today did a 3 hour bike ride plus a transition run.  Finally seemed to get the nutrition thing down (meaning I was able to eat something) and what a difference blood sugar makes to my energy and mood!

Hope everyone else is having a great weekend, too.

Basking in the endorphins,

Jaime

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I had my first multi-sport race of the year and got in my long run without doing any damage.

The duathlon went went as well as could be expected, but never as well as I hope for :-). The same course is run in October and it's part of my prepaid season pass thing, so I'll get to test my nonswim season improvements.

Nice job Jamie!

Bill, congrats anyway!  I'm sure you did fine.  You're always way to modest!

I got all my training in this weekend.  Plus, I sat down and figured out lumber supplies for my basement.  I finished the Drylok last weekend.  So last night I went to the local Menards and ordered up all my building supplies for delivery Wednesday!  Hoping to get some work done on Friday since it's my rest day and I'm off work for Good Friday!

Then came the bad news.  I looked at my workouts for the next three weeks and wasn't happy!  Coach has me at 12hours per week for the next 3!  I was really hoping to get at least one more pullback week of 6-8 hours to get going on the basement before I leave for California.  Grrrrrrr.  Worse, it's pretty loaded on the weekends.  All 3 weekends are 7 hours of training!  Including a 4 hour ride on all 3 Sundays.  I hope the weather warms up!  I'm about tired of the trainer.  No way I have what it takes mentally to put in 4 hour trainer rides right now!  I love my coach and we are getting some good results.  But, I'm pretty time crunched!  He leans more toward improvement by volume vs improvement by intensity, and I really don't have the time for that!

I'll take the heat over the cold any day, but you can keep the wind!

Glad you are having a good time and are getting some quality time in training wise!

My coach is the same way, prefers the Z2 - Z3 for the bike, and less than that for the run.  Take advantage of the time you have I guess is the only advice to give.

I was able to get in all my workouts last week - over 10hrs - first time I have crossed the 10 hour mark w/ just s/b/r! Another big week this week. We are supposed to get over a foot of snow today (already around 8") so treadmill again for today and most likely the rest of the week - though if I have to do my 1:45 min run on the treadmill I may cryCry

Hey all.

Love Texas.  Not great in the heat over 90.  But we had 7 inches of snow here last night and I am so ready for this to end.

Running is going well toward the marathon at the end of April.  Second 20 miler done on Saturday.  Shorter run this weekend, then another 20 miler and taper.  My coach thinks I'm going to do really well at the marathon.  I'm hoping for 4:15 or so.   The goal is to increase run endurance earlier than ever and then keep it while I bring up the bike and swim.  Both of those are going well too so I'm happy so far.

Signed up for the USAT level 3 coaching course at Kona the week before IM Championships.  We're staying at the same hotel so all is good.  I should be recovered enough from IM Moo to do some riding on the course and swim in the ocean.  Exciting year.

I am trying to keep up with your posts.  Sounds like you all are having a grand season.  Kick some serious butt.

I'm with Iceman, I am over the snow!! We didn't get 7 inches (yikes!), but it's been snowing for 3 days! Normally this time of year it's in the 50s, last year was mild & it was green by now & in the 60s. Right now it's in the teens! Headed to Texas on Thursday (Dallas area), temps in the 70s, so ready! We are driving, so I'm going to try & bring my bike so I can ride outside. I'm a little nervous about getting my workouts in/that consuming my vacation, especially after having such a good month.

Had a good swim today. I have a hard time going faster & being comfortable with it (I'm a bit fan of slow & easy). Today I really pushed my main set, all of it, & enjoyed it. For me, that's a big deal!

Good work with the swim!  I ordered the Finis gadget that Ice talked about a few pages ago to help with my swim tempo.  I know when I don't think about it my swim stroke drops to a really low pace.  That and I need to swim more than once a week!

I hope you have good weather for your vacation!

Its great to hear everyone progressing with their training, even with the occasional snags and time crunches. I finally was ale to compete in my first HM. I had to back out of the last two last year due to calf injuries, but at least I can finally say I did it. The course had a few more hills then anticipated, but I was close to my goal time. I planned on breaking 2 hours and had 2:04.47 (but two mins was to stop at the port-a-potties right over the timing mat! - I had waited for 30 mins on the lines before hand, but had to break to start the run.) I'll beat it next time.

I have another five weeks of pre-season rides using Trainer Road and to also start hitting the pool, before my HIM training starts. Looking foward to bigger and better things while still 'living the dream'!

I hope all is well.

Wow, everyone seems to have had a great week/weekend of training!
Jaime--Great job with your training and nutrition success! I know when I finally was able to incorporate eating before/during long workouts I noticed a big difference in energy.
Bill--Congrats on your duathlon! It's a start, right?
Brian--Congrats on your training and making progress on your basement project! And good luck over your next few weeks of training--one day at a time, right?
Robin--Great training week for you, congrats on hitting a milestone!
Ice--Great job on your marathon prep! What a great feeling to feel confident and ready going into your marathon.
Ali--Really good job on pushing past your comfort zone! I have a lot of friends who are in that situation of feeling good in their comfort zone and they're afraid to push out of it--I am always encouraging them to just push a little harder because I KNOW they can do it. And of course when they do they feel great and so proud of themselves--well done!
John--congrats on your first half marathon! A great accomplishment, especially if you had injury barriers in the past.

As for me, my first tri of the season did not go exactly as planned. I won't get into too much detail because I'll post a blog link about it sometime this week, but in a nutshell:
--Woke up at 1am the night before the race with abdominal cramps. No idea what caused them, except my husband has been sick since Thursday with what we thought was food poisoning. His was severe vomit/diarrhea/chills/etc., and mine was just pain. Could not sleep much because of the mild cramps, and of course had to get up at 4:30 for the tri. Not a good start!
--Took some Pepto to try to alleviate the cramping, which seemed to help a bit, but had no appetite. Forced down a Clif Bar so I at least had some calories in me before the start.
--Water was 69 degrees so borrowed a friend's wetsuit. Swim was SO difficult--cloudy skies and low lighting made it hard to see the buoys, very windy which made the current strong and the water very choppy. Wetsuit felt really constricting on my chest so I had difficulty breathing comfortably. I did beat 30 minutes which was my goal, but I hated every second of it.
--WINDY bike ride made my average so much lower than it usually is. I am so slow in the wind!
--Run started fine, but my stomach was not happy with the gel and gatorade I was feeding it. I still did the run a little faster than the same race two years ago, so that's good.

So instead of beating my time from two years ago, I was 9 minutes slower, almost all due to the bike but a little in transition. I have been really sick since then, but am finally feeling better today and will try to get my run and swim in tonight, even if I take it easy. Decided to skip the gym this morning, even though I hate missing planned workouts. But the strength training should be the first to go when something has to be left out, right?

Here's to another week!

Becky...First off, great job on the swim!!  To hit that goal in bad conditions has to be satisfying.  Don't worry about the rest of the race.  9 minutes slower on a windy course isn't bad at all!

Did you just do gatorade and gels?  Cuz gels need water to disolve.  Gatorade and gels will make just about anyone sick.  Let alone if you were already having stomach issues.

Becky, way to push through what sounds like a really difficult race!  I think a lot of people would not have finished under those conditions.  I might not even have started.

I have a really hard time in the wind also.  It's a big mental issue for me, I find it very hard to stay positive.  Anyway, great job!

Has anyone had corns develop on their feet?  If so, what did you do about them?  I have one below my pinkie toe on the pad and it starting to hurt when I walk.  WebMd says I should stop doing whatever it is that is causing the problem, which isn't really an option!

I have a 2 1/2 hour trainer ride followed by a 30 min run - it's -6 out right now w/ around a foot of fresh snow, should be a fun SHORT run!

Happy Hump Day!!

Never had that issue Robin, thankfully.  I would suggest seeing a podiatrist, preferably one that is a triathlete or runner.

It has been another busy week traveling for work.  Home last night so almost a week before I head out again.  Fortunately this is a recovery week for me so it was certainly manageable.  Next week starts a specific race build for my May HIM, so the volume climbs to 13 +/- weeks for a while, with the exception of recovery weeks.

How is everyone else doing?

Another note, I see that they have posted a notice of new mentor groups starting in April.  I will keep going if you folks all want to.  It will give us a chance bring in some new people as well since we have had some drop outs.

Let me know what you think.
