Randy- stop whining and HTFU.

I sent Randy an inspirational video for his TT. It's under his inspires for the day if you'd like to check it out. I don't think it can be posted on the main forum..

BTW- Randy, your trucker hat will fit right in with the video. You need to put it on and dance around the kitchen while you sing the song. See if your wife will make us a video. Tell your kids that you could look like the guy around the 1:56  mark of the video if you didn't work out.

I'm going to add this song to my playlist.

Wow, I come here for a little support and encouragement and this is what I get? Have you seen the commercial on TV with the older lady and all the pictures on her living room wall? She tells her friend that is sitting there that she "unfriends her."  Rene...I "unfriend you." Where do you find this "music"? Oh, and I got much better game than the lead singer...with or without the trucker hat!

Rene-You've got too much time on your hands during your break.....go to the pool!

Took the day off yesterday because of advising in the morning, classes in the afternoon, and a concert to attend in the evening, but it turned out to be a really bad idea. It completely threw me off my grove so I basically forgot to do the essential things....including drinking enough water. Starting getting dehydrated last night around 8pm, dealt with it at 10-11 when the concert was over, but I didn't down as much water as I should have, so I woke up at 8:30 this morning to find myself parched. Downed two bottles since then.

One thing is for sure though: Starting on Friday and throughout Spring Break next week,I'm going to build some form of consistency into an inconsistent schedule and figure out a meal/snack plan that's cheap and easy to prep. At the most, I want to spend a day on Saturday prepping for the week. I have to incorporate snacks because not doing so is forcing me to eat larger meals, which isn't helping my weight loss adventure.

Anyways, pollen season has finally come to North Georgia and my allergies are going ballistic right now. Got a 45' ride slated for today, so hopefully allergies won't hamper that party.

What goes around comes around.

My bike workout this morning was 10X 2 min at 110%. Towards the end of the workout I started to feel  bad and had to turn on "Randy's" song. There was no way that I was going to quit the workout  given the HTFU note that I sent him earlier.  Completed my workout and started looking at the downloaded file. No wonder the last 2 intervals were so difficult. I screwed up the workout and accidentally did 12 X 2 minutes instead of 10. That's what I get for opening my big mouth.

BAM! BTW- Randy, I exceeded the interval targets by 7-10 watts..

College son says the guy at the 1:56 mark of the video is a parody of Techno Viking. You can search for him on You Tube. Randy, your kids probably also know who that is. lol..

Woof. Tried a swim today but I'm still not breathing too clearly from being sick, coughing, all that good stuff. Made it one lap and knew it wasn't going to be pretty. Ended up trying to do my warmups to see how it felt and I was absolutely gassed after doing easy warmups so there was no way I was going to get any benefit from flailing around in the water for another 30 minutes feeling that my chest was going to collapse. Typically the swim is the last thing I re-start after a cold but I thought I'd give it a shot. Oh well. Run tonight since it's so warm out.

Started the recovery week with a 3.1 mile bike ride. I'll be going home to a lot of hills next week, so it's a great opportunity to do some endurance training.

Preferably while avoiding burnout as well.

Jamie. I like how the compression tights feel for about six hours and then they start to get irritating. I truly don't think they make much difference. I bought one pair at full price then got two more pairs at 70%+ off. Not sure I would have bought them otherwise or if I would buy them again. I do like compression socks for days at work when my legs are really tired.

Randy. Haven't watched the video yet but I will. My sympathies go out to you. I have started treating the TTs like the serious business that they are. I put on my race kit, fuel like I would for a race and try to get my pre-race psyche going before I start. Some how it makes it better when I treat it like a short, and very painful, race.

Randy, I'm disappointed that the trucker hat photo isn't your profile picture yet!

I'm tired.

That's all.

MTB and run on tap for lunch. Kinda looking forward to it.

Glad you all like the picture! I'm always looking for ways to share my little corner of the world.

OK, I found my substitute for my whining about not being able to work hard running yesterday. Today is Tuesday which was always the day for my fun intervals when I was following the traditional base plan on trainer road. So, thought I would keep that going and do one of the VO2Max workouts tonight.

Wow! That’s all I have to say. Main set was two times 3X3’ all out (at least 110% FTP and over 100 cadence) on 3’ super easy with 8’ between the two sets. Holy smokes, that was tough…and fun! Haha, what is wrong with me? I did end up cutting it short because I dropped my chain coming out of the second interval in the second set. So, by the time I got the chain back on I just spun out easy for about 7- minutes. Now, I’m kind of mad at myself for not getting that last one done…especially after Rene did extra intervals just for fun.

Swim today was meh…but they all are. I am doing a little better breathing to my left side and I think I actually did about 150 yards nonstop today, but who knows, I may have lost count. Really trying to keep my chin in and not look out in front of me, not sure if it’s helping or not.

I hope everyone is having a great night. Nice EASY run for me tomorrow, maybe a swim depending on how busy I am mid-day.

Stuart and you swim gurus...

While swimming last year, I noticed (particularly in the pool when I had the opportunity to think about my stroke) that when I take a breath (doesn't matter if it's to the left or to the right), that I tend to lose my catch on the opposite hand (so if I'm breathing right, I lose my left hand and when breathing left, I lose the right hand). What I mean is this: When starting a swim stroke as my hand enters the water, I extend forward with my right hand, I then drop my fingers towards the bottom of the pool by bending at the wrist and then push the water backwards maintaining a highish elbow.

However, if I'm needing a breath, I will turn my head to the left, and rather than being able to catch the water and push it backwards (or push my body beyond my hand...whichever way you want to think about it) with my right hand, I find that I end up using that opposite hand (in this case, the right) for stability and then push my hand towards the bottom of the pool and then pushing it backwards versus pushing it back alongside my body to propel myself forward. It seems to me that it's got to be a body position/stability issue, but I'm not quite sure how to fix it.

Does what I described make ANY sense at all? If so, any exercises or drills that you can think of to allow me to keep that catch and use it to my advantage rather than losing that momentum by using the hand to balance myself? I'm wondering if a faster turnover (I'm a SLOW swimmer...I tend to be a bit of a glider) might help.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Well, I survived the test. Improved about 10 watts over the last test in December. Feel like I paced it well and may have left 1-2 watts out there by not pushing harder a little earlier. On the other hand, I could have blown up by doing that. Had a 20 minute run after the test and felt good. Really good news is that my Coach indicated there would be no more 20 minute tests through the Summer. So happy to have that over with!

Randy, a 10 watt increase on a 20 TT is significant. Nice work.

No Joke! I'm sure it had a lot to do with a certain video played on loop for 20 minutes.

Nice job Randy!

Aloha!

I'm not going to even try to tell you I caught up on all the chatter over the last few days.  I will say congrats Steve!, nice job Randy!  and even nicer job Rene!!

Here's where I spent my day, Hanelei Bay my favorite beach on the Island!

We've had a terrific trip so far with one exception, I hurt my knee--slipped on ice with the dog before we left and within two runs here it was a wreck.  I've been talking to the resident BT doc as well as my Sports Med doc and PT.  Diagnosis is most likely a torn lateral meniscus--even did some of the tests today and it seems very clear.   No running for me here which means Boston is in real doubt.  To say I am heart broken is a little strong, but not by much.  I'm trying to keep a positive spirit and enjoy what I can do on the Island.  Easier said than done since this is such an outdoor location.  Oh well.  I just hope I don't need surgical repair.  Won't know that until 3/21 when I see the doc and get an MRI.

Carry on.

Suzy- beautiful pics! I hope you're able to get around and still enjoy your trip. I am so sorry to hear that you may have torn your lateral meniscus. That is exactly what I did last year. The best advice that I can give you is if you need surgery to get it as soon as possible. Hopefully it isn't anything major and surgery won't have to be an option. Sending positive healing thoughts your way.

Enjoy your trip.  Please post more pics so we can live vicariously through you!!

Chris, sorry to hear about the knee setback. It'll come back.

Jason, I'm pretty much addicted to wearning compression tights at night. They work wonders for me (or maybe it's just psychological?).

Randy, great job on the 20-minute TT! A 10W improvement is very impressive. You're putting out some serious Watts. Keep it up!

Jamie, that deep tissue acupuncture sounds painful. I'm a masochist, so I'll have to try it sometime.

Suzy, great picture! Hanelei Bay looks spectacular! Thanks for sharing. Really sorry to hear about your knee injury. Hope for the best...  and enjoy the rest of your vacation.

Yes Please! Could use some warm thoughts as 2-3 more inches of snow fell here overnight.

Suzy, sorry to hear about the knee. We are quite a rough group on our menisci (plural of meniscus?)! I have had the lateral and medial done in the same knee so I understand the frustration. Enjoy the rest of the trip and I'll keep you in my thoughts for healing.

Suzy-hate to hear about the knee issue. Hope the MRI will show it is minor and you can avoid surgery.

I'm on the road today. 40 minute run this evening is all I have on the schedule for workouts.

Suzy - So sorry to hear about your knee. Enjoy your trip while you're there and everything will get sorted out once you get back home.

Did a nice easy run last night, just 3 miles, starting to build up again although the snow we're supposed to get will put a stop to that pretty quick. Going to try the pool again at lunch to see if I can breath any better then hit up an hour-ish ride on the trainer tonight. Maybe catch up on some Breaking Bad.

OH NO SUZY!!!!

I hope it's not surgery serious. But on the other hand, sometimes I think those types of fixes are better in the long run.

Enjoy the rest of your trip. TOTALLY Jealous

Had PT today. We started working the anterior side of my shin and OMFG. It hurt so much I was like screaming on the table. Ok maybe not screaming but I'm sure other people were uncomfortable. By the time I left it felt really good though - nice and stretchy etc. As the day goes on it's getting tight again so lots of rolling and stretching until my next torture session.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

Hasta tomorrow - oh, we're getting rain and then a flash freeze so tomorrow should be fun!

As you know, I am totally bummed for you. I hope the internet diagnostics are wrong. Hang in there and I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

On the bright side, I guess you are in a pretty nice place to participate in forced total rest.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
