Cute story from my ride tonight.  I was taking a fairly easy ride (except when some other middle aged guy tried to race me :-)).  A bit latter I slowed down to pass a mom and her two kids.  As I started to pass her son, he sped up to race me.  He looked like he was about 8 and was on a mountain bike.  He got out of the saddle, kept working hard and looking back.  After about a minute he says "hey, your not passing me".  I say "hey, you are pretty fast".  He says "does your bike have gears too?".  We chit chatted a bit longer until we came to a road where we had to stop.  I'm pretty sure I made his night and the fact that I'm typing this means he pretty much made mine too.

ceilidh - 2010-06-23 10:41 AM Morning, morining all.

I did not get a run in yesterday. I'll have to do it today. A tree fell in our yard blocking the drive. The hubbie and I had to spend a really hot afternoon and evening chopping and toting wood. I did log it thought!

Marla, are you getting nervous?

that should definitely count as a workout (i mean if POLE DANCING can get logged.....!)

& YES, thanks. haven't worked out in about 2+ weeks, so honestly feel that i was in better shape a month ago, which i'm trying not to let freak me out. good news -for me - is that it's so flippin hot that they've already banned wetsuits. orca gets to sit this one out!

Hey - my wife doesn't complain when I do my version of it, just as your husband wouldn't if you did a little of the real thing for him.  Wink
You'll do great!  Just take your time, race your race and smile the whole time.  I don't follow my own advice and sometimes act like it's a job while I'm racing.  Don't do that!  Tongue out

Everyone loves a good Poledance, no matter the kind, TOPPAGE!

i'll have to smile - they're projecting temps in teh high 90's AND thunderstorms...what else is there to do but laugh? honestly, i'm just frustrated bc i wanted to be fit enough to get to teh top of mt albert on my bike and for once not feel like there's not enough air in the universe to fill my lungs...but whatever... i need to remember what team i'm racing with, and try to keep that in perspective...

(and i'm all for doing as i say, not as i do, btw...that's how i make my living Laughing)

GO M&Ms!!!!!

any other racers out there?

Goooo Mike and Marla!

I am doing my grandmother-in-law's flower garden this weekend.  I am sort of racing against finishing it by July 1st, does that count?  Tongue out

Sure it does. I have the same race going on here as well. I'll race you for getting them both done this weekend!

Ohhh - It's SOOOOO ON!  You will suffer greatly at the hands of my weeding, digging, and fertilizing prowess!!

(Now, I just have to figure out how to explain to my wife why we're doing this on Saturday instead of Sunday, like we planned...)

Lets DO THIS!  (Oh ya, I have Friday off-  Maniacal laughter) Mwah ha ha ha)

I'm finished! How did you do?

By the way, for anyone wondering, sometimes it pays to procrastinate.  All annuals, roses, and a bunch of other stuff were 50% or more off and they were much larger plants because they had been sitting around.  We were able to buy fewer plants for much less money.  It almost made the two months of looking at dirt in the garden worth it!  Money mouth

Thanks so much for all your good wishes - between y'all and my local team & new local club, I felt so supported, which helped make it all so much fun - what a blast I had today!

Was advised to be at the park at the ungodly hour of 5/5:30 AM. Stayed at a hotel half a mile away vs. home which is 30-40 minutes away. Woke up at 3:50 and was too pumped to sleep. Got to the park as the sun was rising, and it was so cool to see the transition area - about 2000 registered athletes - come alive. The classic rock blaring was awesome, and it was great to see that Bikey survived his first slumber party. Team Fight folks marked me up & added smileys for elan, and I was in the Team tent tossing back water by 6 AM.

I may have nightmares about being devoured by seaweed for a month, but the swim was ok otherwise (once I stopped feeling like I was going to throw up, that is, and I was 20th out of 70-something in my AG in the swim which was a total rush), and I had the best bike ride ever (for me) on the course, averaging just over 14mph, hills and all. Run sucked - felt like knives jabbing my hips, so I walked most, & ended up around 50th overall in my group, but I finished the damn thing, had lots of great conversation along the way, and having my daughter meet me at the chute to cross the finish line with me was a total Hallmark moment.

I don't know if I'm still just punch-drunk sleepy or still on a total adrenaline rush, but I've stayed so pumped up all day.

Going out for dinner with the family - will probably write a real race report later.

Cool

BTW, temps approached 100 today, & I learned that if you keep your sports bra (add that to your shopping list guys) filled with ice, it doesn't feel nearly as hot....not to mention that the rhythmic sound you make when you run is kinda peppy....

I have been MIA all weekend. No, I did NOT finish the yard work. I FAIL!!
It is too hot and dry to plant anything. It would be murder for the little buggers.
I did have hospital visits, funerals, birthday parties, house guests and some lolling in the lake time, though.

Thanks! My last race was a blast.  For a couple days leading up to it, I was dreading it.  Not because of the race itself, but because of the hassle and not knowing anyone there.  It seems like a hassle to me to pack up all the gear, get up at 4 am, drive by myself to the race site, etc.  Oh, and it was very hot and humid and the course was very hilly.  After my pre-race dread routine, I decided to HTFU and go get it done.  The course was very hilly and technical.  I'd never been there before so every turn was new.  I didn't know whether I'd be shifting up or down, just that I would be shifting.  I cycled through all 30 gears a bunch of times and had a blast.  I was disappointed in my run but it was hot, humid and hilly so I shouldn't be so hard on myself, but to tell the truth, I'm disappointed with my running in general.  It seems like I should be able to run a lot faster than what I do now.  I'm wondering if some of it is mental.

Anyway, I had so much fun doing the race that I signed up for two more.  The next one is 7/11 and is about 2/3 of an Oly distance.  The one after that is a Sprint with an Oly distance ride on 7/18.

Full RR here http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=214645

As for the increased training volume, it's because I started a 12 week Oly plan two weeks ago and it has a lot more volume than what I had been doing, specially swimming and biking.  So far so good though I have some travel and vacation coming up that will have a big impace on my training.  The Oly is September 4th.   I share some on my training thoughts on my blog

It's hot and dry here and probably going to be the death of what we planted but we did it anyway.  Take that mother nature!!

At least you got some lake lolling time though...that makes it all okay.

sorry bud, but ROTFLMAO on that one. My only question is what proportion of the running thing ISNT mental?! i'm trying hard to like it, but can't quite get there....am hoping that if i can EVER do it pain free i might start to like it...or maybe not think it sucks??

My snickers aside, do you have a local running club that does speed workouts you could hang with sometime? When I was still trying to run a few weeks ago, I was substituting intervals for 1 or 2 of my 3-4 weekly runs....made it up as I went along, but would start w/ .5-1 mile slower jog, then alternate 90 sec of kick-butt fast-as-i-can treadmill speed with 1-2 min brisk walk recovery, and amass 2-3 miles total. Then, on the runs, found that I could actually maintain my pace (for 3 miles at least) running at a rate just faster than that at which I could hold a conversation, which is what I'd been trained to do. My goal was to try to keep the distance constant, but try to increase my pace 5-10 sec a week for a few weeks & see if that worked....

your ride sounded great, tho, btw...what fun! Besides the obvious physical effort required, wouldn't write off the extra mental effort required to be on your toes to handle a technical & new course like that, too - that is, would think that's bound to contribute to the general fatigue too, wouldn't you?

As for the heat, not sure what the male equivalent of a bra full of ice would be ...actually, I do have some ideas, but none of them pretty Innocent
