Hello-

New to the posting world(hopefully I am doing this right).  Professional lurker I guess.

I have really appreciated all your advice and insights.

I am from a non athletic background in my third year of trying to be an athlete.  Friends convinced me this would be a good idea and thus I am set to do my first full distance event with you all in about 2 weeks (ahhhhh!).  I am anxious and excited.  I hope you all have a wonderful event.

My brief-  "Retired" from emergency medicine 4 years ago to become a house dad for Gracie(6), Austin(5), and Caleb(5).  (Twins- the life changers).  Anyhow, after starting to sleeping again I somehow decided I should learn to swim.  Joined a masters group where I eventually fell under the influence of triathletes.  Got a road bike and started "running" (I am a terrible runner).  In what time I have secured for myself I have trained my butt off (all realtive, but it still hurts) over the last year in hopes of completing this next adventure.

Thank you again for alleviating many fears and best of luck November 5th!

Scott

Petty? Maybe. It is weird that the sound of Mike Reilly's voice is one of the things that I'm looking forward to most on the 5th. Maybe they should put a light a little way from the finish line and turn it on when Reilly takes a potty break so that people like us can jog on the spot until he is finished

He wasn't there last year, or at IM Canada the year before as he went to IMKY that year which was the same day.

My first IMLP finishing in the last hour he was in the finishing chute, whipping his towel around, but other guy did most of the talking and announced I was an Ironman so I'm 0 for 3.

The Voice of Ironman should not be allowed to be human. If I'm expected to do it on the bike then he should be under similar restrictions

Last year on second loop I had a cap light that I used (posted link to one I bought from Amazon on earlier page..swiveling feature helps a lot) and also had a very small hand held flashlight I put in my pocket, used in the State forest then gave it away to another athlete.

In looking for a small flashlight I found a tiny one that is 6 lumiens. Anyone know if that is bright enough to be able to see ground?

Hello, I’ve spent the last week running through this entire string. WOW, what a wealth of information, from the; what/how to pack in the transition bags, route reviews, down to the nutrition plans.

This will be my first attempt at a full distance IM and second year of doing triathlons. This year I’ve done two sprints, a sprintlymic, an Olympic, and a 70.3 leading up to IMFL.

I’ve been following the intermediate Be Iron Fit Plan and so far so good. Best shape in year’s probably my whole life.

So to attempt to contribute, Last year I volunteered at IMFL in the bike transition area. Actually handed the first bike out as I was in section 1 – 200. I saw quite a few people slip and some actually go down fairly hard while running in their bike shoes. When you come back in off the bike you make a right hand turn to the T2 bag area, lots of people lost there footing when turning. You can leave your shoes on the bike when you come back in and that is what I plan to do.

The other thing I noticed was that people were having difficulty standing up straight after getting off the bike. I always try to remember that coming in and begin to loosen up on the last mile.

Well thanks again the information in this thread had been very helpful in filling in some of the blanks especially from the people who have a few IM under there feet.

One thing I noticed that when it gets dark I run faster because I cannot not see what coming up so I just focus on running

You never make it through an Ironman training plan without setbacks right?

Well, my setback just came into town. This past weekend, my back was aching and I decided to put off my last long ride until this weekend to give my body some rest and to recover. Unfortunately, this wasn't able to happen. This Monday, I was having a meeting with my boss and I was moving an extra chair into his office. I brought the chair in, not heavy at all, and put it down on the ground. I didn't twist in any weird way at all, but the second I put the chair down, my whole back seized up and I could not stand up straight. Very strange how one small little movement like that can put your whole body down.

Well, since then, I've spent the past 3-4 days in massive amounts of pain. I was in bed for most of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with excruciating pain in my hip, low back and shin. The doctor diagnosed it as a pinched nerve/sciatica and I've got some meds now, but nevertheless, I've been on the shelf since last week and am getting a little nervous of IMFL. I've done a decent amount of long rides bricks and culminating with a 100 miler with a 40 min brick two weeks ago. I have also been following the swim and run plan almost to the T (just have not been logging at all).

Any thoughts or ideas on what I should do with the rest of my time? I'm un-officially in taper mode, but should I put in one last push when I am healthy again?

Sounds like a taper to me. Are you keeping intensity while reducing your frequency?

OK, tried the gel before swimming experiment today.  Took Powerbar gel about 5 minutes before my 4,000 yd swim at lunch.  No issues other than trying to get that god awful taste out of my mouth.

enjoy,

Ugh this sucks...I'm so sorry!  I have decided that after this weekend I am pretty much living in a bubble until race day.

I always think it's better to be healthy and undertrained at the start line then overtrained and injured.  I have had to take my own advice after my IT band started acting up but I really think it's best to heal the body and rest up.

But I am no expert and this is my first IM
