Jen,

As much time as you and Scott spend riding indoors, I'd say a Computrainer would be the most incredible piece of equipment for you. You'll get power metering, computer hookup, fun videos that actually interact with you and increase/decrease resistance according to the route, measurable progress and the biggest of all, it is easier to put a long ride on the Computrainer than on a fluid based trainer or magnetic type. For the amount of years that you'll use it, the fact that there's two of you in the same household using it and all, I say that's a no brainer. Big investment but worth it!

Just my two cents...

Thanks Ernesto.  We'll have to evaluate the options within our budget.  Right now my top two priorities for bike gear is new yellow tires for our tris this year (gotta have yellow tires to match my black and yellow bike) and tri cycling shoes (right now I have standard cycling shoes).  Given I have a 5+ year old road bike with 6000+ miles on it and Jen just got a new bike, what would make more sense....a new bike for me or a computrainer for us to share?  Purchasing both in the same year just isn't in the cards for us.

Here's the cycling route Jennie mentioned we'll be riding once we can get back outdoors (you hav eto go to the player to see the excellent elevation profile):

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/105545268

Just know I drove this in my car.....I definitely didn't average over 30 mph on my bike!

Well, I almost threw up just thinking about the first mile and then between 10.2 and 12.2, definitely the hardcore stuff that Coloradians love. I would do it exactly backwards though, to get a good warm up downhill and then climb over six miles as opposed to two. I wouldn't do the entrance to the base though, just from the main road.

I think one of the best parts is the lowest elevation on the route (6,452 ft) is about 900 ft higher than the highest point on the bike course for the Boulder 70.3 race we are doing in August.  So we'll be training between 900 and 1900 ft higher than the highest point in our target race this year.  That should help a bit.  Now we just need to be able to ride outdoors.

Now that's what I call hills. I am luck around here to find a hill that is higher then 100m. and i complain about these hills Good effort to keep up the speed like you do going up the hills.

Just read the post and that makes a little more sense now. You drove not rode the hills

Easy 10.5 mile ride - planning to keep it easy this week, as Ernesto says need to give my body time to adjust to the increase training. Left the garmin connected to computer all night...computer went into hybrnation and sucked the power from the Garmin so this morning it had no battery. No data for the ride.

Today: 1'10" on trainer.  90+ cadence, easy spinning.  Slept like crap due to taking decongestant last night (psuedoephedrine) and definitely have a mild head/sinus cold.  Trying to ingest lots of Vitamin C...any other good cures out there?  Didn't run today - dialing back running this week as I hit 70 miles on Sunday putting me on track for 140 for the month...I'd be happier around 120 for now.  Putting off cycling test until next week.  Train healthy Team.

ernestov - 2012-01-16 10:41 PM Mitch, did you know that you can now upload your Polar workouts? The website now supports a lot of devices, even websites. I'm uploading some bike stuff directly from training peaks, where I can see power graphs and charts.

Thanks! I saw that and tried it - I still have to upload the file to my computer and then it looks like the only data it captures is time, distance, avg HR, and Max HR.  I'm looking forward to my Garmin arriving and then my Polar will become my backup.

scottputnam - 2012-01-16 10:11 PMThanks Ernesto.

Yay for the yellow tires! I have those (Continental) on my road bike and they look really cool Wink

As far as riding in winter... While in Chicago, what worked for me was a cheap ($150.-) mountain bike. I had a trainer as well, but MTB was always more fun. Sure the rides were short (and I had few spills on ice...) but there's nothing like the real thing.

Ran for 35 minutes warm up on treadmill. Then worked with trainer try out this crazy workout....
Do each set in a row dont take any break
10 pushups
10 squats with band under feet and arms in curl position (band should always remain tight from up to down / biceps flex'd)
10 pushup starting position drop forearm / elbow to ground and then lift back up to normal push up position (hard to explain)

Do 20 sets of this non-stop.
End up with 200 pushups, 200 squats, 200 drops
6 mos ago I could never have done this. Very happy with my progression.

I missed yesterday.

Another workout on the trainer, 1:25:36 I covered slightly more distance (according to the sensor) with a lower HR of 1 beat.  It's not much but I'll take it!!!  Max speed was higher as well!

Not posting a weight change as I'm still at 114

Houston we have a problem ...

It has happened twice now that instead of the most updated thread being forwarded on to the next posting a previous thread is posted.  On both of these occassions, my most recent data entry was lost.  For example, although i entered day 15> 14:38 yesterday it was lost so that ernestov's previous entry (directly above) has charlotte at day 14 > 13:34.  On both occasions when my data was dropped, it was the same person who did not copy the thread correctly.

I will log my exercise for today later.  This thread is just to update the thread that Ernestov copied with my results from yesterday. However, I have not take time to determine whether only my data was dropped from yesterday or others data was also dropped.

Probably, when we enter today, we each need to double check that our data is correct for moving forward tomorrow.

Charlotte,

People get dropped because of simultaneous posting. Someone is updating or organizing the list at the same time you are updating. So the person gets the most recent update, copies it, adds his or her own or otherwise cleans up. But in the meantime, you post your update. Then that person hits "Submit" and your update is lost because it wasn't there when he or she copied. No big deal. Just make sure that when you next update, the new total agrees with what is on the left hand side of your training log for January totals (after you add up your run, bike, and swim times).

Run snow advisory, very heavy wet stuff, run super slow, got in 5 miles and then ran out of time.

I would also add that we need to be careful when copying the data and ensure you get everything and when you paste ensure it looks correct.  I have seen instances where people didn't copy everything.  Not a biggie.  I also double check my total every time by using my training log total insead of just adding today's minutes to the Ernesto thread list.  That way if I had an adding error yesterday it doesn't carry forward day after day.

Nice easy swim.  Was going to do a slightly harder set, but all the lanes were full of slow people (turns out 4.15pm isn't a good time to swim), so I just took it easily.  Probably a good thing as I've joined Mitch in his slight cold.  Hoping to fight it off before the weekend.

My update from yesterday got lost, so I'm adding it back in along with today.

Not sure how I will get motivated to swim tomorrow...I know the general rule - sick above the neck = safe to workout; sick below the neck = rest....we'll see.

Hey everyone....

I hate to bring it up but since last nights post, Scott and I have been going in circles about HR vs Power.  I know we aren't going to get a computrainer at this point since Scott wants a new bike(his will hit 6000 miles soon).  Nor will we be getting a power tap and hub yet.  What I was looking at is the Garmin cadence sensor that will link to my watche and utilizing the virtual website for indoor rides.  The cadence sensor I use now does not save the information on cadence so I never know what the average is, whether I'm indoors or not.  Average cadence isn't as pressing for Scott since he has been riding so long.

Would the added information gathered, even in the Virtual sense, be worth replacing my cadence sensor and using the website.
