Howdy all,

I just sent BigDH a quick message asking if it was ok to post here.  I guess in hindsight I could have just posted.  But thank for the quick response

NAME: Chris

STORY: This is my third year of triathlon.  And as I was explaining to Darren I really lost the luster for the bike and want to focus mostly on running after first half iron in Sept.  I plan to use swimming as cross training.

Family Status: Married to an understanding wife who stares at me with a hairy eyeball when I mention "marathon".  Last year the Philadelphia marathon had two fatalities.  Once I get through one she will be okay.  She wants to run some 5k and 10k with me and our first 5K is in July.  We have 3 dogs.

CURRENT TRAINING: Logs are up to date always.  I am not really following a plan per se, I just swim bike and run as much as possible.  I have been floundering and wishy washy this year especially with the bike but I have been running pretty consistently since I started all this.  My plan is to swim 3x, run 3x and bike 2x a week.  My longest run week to date has been 24 miles (38K).  By the half Iron I plan to be around 30 miles (48K).

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I did my first half mary as a trail run and loved it.  My legs were pretty fried as my longest technical trail run was 8 miles and half of that was just gravel.  I am doing 2 sprints, 1 Oly and my first half in Sept.

WEIGHT LOSS: I lost 40 lbs since I started.  I am currently 200 lbs and would like to get to 185 for my half iron.  My wife is vegan and I do all the cooking so I end up with a plant based diet about 90% of the time.

GOALS: I want to run for fun and run a lot.  After Sept my plan is to run 6x a week and eventually baring any unforeseen injuries, contingencies or pregnancy's run my first Ultra in the late spring of '13.

FAVORITE BEER: By volume it would be Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale.  By choice is Racer 5 and Lagunitas IPA.  Although I don't really like brown ales, Rouge makes a Hazelnut Brown Nectar that is pretty amazing.

Planned races from now until my first Ultra:  I don't really have a plan except for after the half iron I will pick up a beginner marathon plan and start somewhere in the middle ending on "race".  If it is too taxing, I'll scratch the mary, drop back and punt.  What are your thoughts?

2012

July 15: Sprint

July 21: 1 mile ocean swim

Aug 12: Oly

Sept 8: first half

Oct 14: Sprint

Nov 18: Philadelphia Marathon

2013

April 27: Trail marathon or trail triple crown (1/2, 10K, 5K)

May 19th:  Dirty German endurance run 50K or 50M - Trail run and appears to have very little gain

Chris - As John McLean said in Die Hard - Welcome to the party Pal!  A few things in order of importance... 1) Totally agree with your choice of beers... Yards is fantastic and I love their Pale,  Also a huge fan on Racer 5 and Lagunitas.  Some of my favorite IPAs - Bells 2 Hearted and Founders Centennial.  Ever tried those?

Founders Centennial yes.  Totally agree.  Bells?  Just added to the list.  Die hard quotes?  Really?  I think I am home.

OK - Time for a quick check in... Time to get my house back in order.... After reaching my goal this week, I've noticed that I''ve started to slide a bit.  Two straight bad eating days (my daughter's animal crackers, big dinners - a killer Prime Rib on my anniversary and the vast majority of a blooming onion, and a large Dairy Queen Dipped Cone) and missing my first workout in forever are a bit concerning to me... It doesn't help that we are moving and I'm getting ready to head to Michigan today...  I need to recommit to healthy living because there is no way in hell I'm losing that bed.  No f'ing way!

So, I'm gonna commit to eating a decent dinner tonight before hitting the road.  I will try to eat well on the way and will not exceed my calorie quota for today or tomorrow...  To reward myself, I will stop along the way for a burger and a beer at one of my favorite breweries in Michigan (Jolly Pumpkin).  If I fail, I will drink a molson...I will check in from Michigan on Saturday after I get my long run in...

Them's called backslide pounds.  I've come to embrace the backslide pounds as they seem to push my a$$ in gear later on in the week.  I had 1 or 2 of these pounds after celebrating you David with the Boston Lager's.

Ran a 13.1 mile TT in 75 degree temps today.  It was awsomely Sh!tt-@.  My goal was to run a 13.6 in 1:50.  I ran 13.1 in 1:44.  Due to overheating, I walked the steep hill at the end.  This was a good simulation for my run in upcoming Half tri distance and was good practice for hydration and such in high temps.  I've never run this far in this hot of weather, and am expecting mid 80's-90's in August.

Well another flat yesterday about 2 miles from home @#$@#$#$. Came home and had a few beers. Changed tire again! Ran hand inside tire...lo and behold a tiny metal sliver sticking out! removed with my fishing pliers and changed again. Hope to get to MEC(rei like store) to purchase a patch kit and a couple of tubes!

I did manage to get out for a great ride this morning! Fastest ride yet over a decent distance! I rip through one small town that has a bakery...at 7:30am the smells just about kill me. I would love to stop and pig out!Smile

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

PS there is a time and place for beers like Molson/labatts/bud etc. After you finish mowing your lawn in the sweltering heat/finishing a half marathon/im etc. You don't even taste the first two beers right after the race!

In 2011 or '10 Yang Ming was voted the #1 Chinese restaurant in America. It is 10 minutes from my house. The mrs and I arrived at the tail end of happy hour last night and bellied up to the bar. I avoided the free fried chicken tenders and seafood dumplings put our for happy hour. My only negative comment about the place is the lack of good beer. Their best is a Samuel Adams Boston lager which is not really bad at all. I didn't pig out and ended up ordering a tuna and wasabi dish. The dish didnt really warrent the need for rice so i avoided it and I was content. 3 beers with dinner and a balvenie double wood for dessert. Today i actually got in an enjoyable 3 hour ride mixed with climbing and flats. Slow but steady. 12 mile road run planned for tomorrow. Oh and I am going to have a few racer 5's at the local tap in a few. I have to hurry before it goes out of rotation.

I can think of many Lager's that will do the same trick with way more of an enjoyable taste.  Boston, Full sail LTD, Heineken, Corona.

I remember the first 2 beers after each game of the hockey tourney were coors or some such.  All that did was primed the pallet for the real thing later.  I will agree it's a matter of oppinion and taste though.  It's funny, we have a split in the locker room of about 60/40 with 60 % of players liking Kokanee, and the other 40% enjoying a heavier pale, IPA, or winter brew.

Have you ever considered a Corona on a hot day after mowing the lawn?  Priceless.

Corona is the mexican version of molsons and budweiser....Smile

I actually buy a local grocery brand beer that is brewed for them by a alberta craft brewer.. cheap and tasty!

I was at the best liquor store in Edmonton today and found a 12pk($28) of ipa's from phillips brewing out of victoria bc....starting the evening out with a brown ale(ipa)very nice and hoppy and dark. Of course I always find the second ipa even better!

Gotta love the racer 5, I have had that one before and love it!

Free chicken tenders and seafood dumplings...i am not going to lie to you...after a long bike and/or run i would have been wolfing them badboys down!

Holy Crap was I tired last night.  No surprise there - after spending the week packing and driving through the night to make it to Michigan, I was sucking wind by last night.  Now, after a good night's sleep and some restoritive Northern Michigan air - I'm back in business.

Let's start with beer - I'm of the opinion that one of the best breweries in America is Jolly Punmpkin out of Ann Arbor Michigan.  Their staple is a saison called Bam Bier and about 3/4 of their line are sour beers.  So, to reward myself for getting back on track, and for not falling asleep and driving into a tree, I ate lunch there yesterday.  The beer was amazing - my sampler had 9 beers - 4 of which were new and out of the 9 beers 4 earned 5 stars on my rating system.  I don't think they have made it out west but if they ever do - they are must haves.

I was jazzed yesterday - I ran my first 10k in maybe 10 years yesterday.  Nothing fast - it took me 70 minutes to get it done, but I got it done.  Considering that I hadn't slept - I felt pretty good and my hip and knee only hurt a bit.  Question - With my OLY in two weeks, would I benefit more from running a few more 10ks as part of my taper or should I stick to shorter less taxing distances?

One more question - I'm trying to plan my taper...I really want to kick some in this race but I need to be mindful of the kicking century I have coming up in 2 months.  So, here is my plan - please tell me what you think. I will cut back on my swim and run by 20% this week and 30% next week (as long as you agree that it would be best NOT to run the race distance again) while increasing my bike by 15% (4x - 2 short, 1 hill, 1 55 miler) this week and reducing it by 50% next week.  Thoughts?

Here is my plan as it stands now

Sunday - 50 mile bike
Monday - 50  minute swim (race distance)
Tuesday - 5 mile Bike Hill Repeats and 5 mile Run Brick -
Wednesday - Rest Day (I'll be in Chicago enjoying some pizza, beer, and a Cubs game)
Thursday - 20 Swim and 55 Bike Brick
Friday - Rest
Sat.  40 minute Swim
Sunday - reduced long (run part of course

Last Week Bike - 95 + 15 miles = 110 miles This Week
Last Week Run 13- 20% = 10 miles this week
Last Week Swim 2:20 - 20% = 110 minutes this week

I'd love your suggestions!  Have a great Sunday everyone!

First off, The beer sounded wonderful.  Hasn't made it out to the west coast yet.

On the taper, I like your plan of dialing it down.  DO NOT run race distance again.  You just did that and now know you can.  You will not gain anything by running 6.2 miles before your race.  Make your long run this week about 5 or 4.  Next week (Race week), no more than 6 or so total miles prior to race.  Maybe do a 3, 2, 2 or something like that, or a 4, 3, or a 3, 2.  Keep those miles low so that your legs can rest.

If this is truly an A race for you, I'd question the 50 mile bike rides as well, but do not have as much cycling experience to make that kind of judgement.  I know after 45 miles today, my legs are sore.  If you want to race your best, you want to avoid sore legs for the next 2 weeks.  When I tapered for marathon, I went from like a 42 mile week down to week in the 20's, followed by a week in the teens.

I hope you truly enjoy your time in Michigan training, spending time with family and recharging for next school year by tasting as many interesting beers as possible!  I hope your OLY taper goes well, and you kick some A on OLY day.

I got a 45 mile bike ride in today.  2:50:09 for a 15.86 mph pace.  About 30 of it was on the HIM course, so this is a huge confidence builder going in.

3 times, I was riding in terrential downpours, and that was interesting.  I just kept thinking that the CouerD'Alene Ironman is happening today, and if they can ride 112 miles in it, I can put up with a 45 miler.

Sadly, there are no beverages in my near future as I am sitting at 180 this morning.  Frown  The wife and I got a little carried away celebrating her lifetime membership to WW.  It was like Rum diaries meets Fireball.  Big weigh in on Wednesday, I want to be ready!

David, I too would lighten the load on the bike for your Oly! Toning down the bike for a tiny bit shouldn't matter in the long run. I say get your lazy butt out Wednesday for a run or bike before you are off to chicago so you can partake in Pizza, beer(steak???Hmmmm!) properly. Especially if your better half is driving...Smile

Well anniversary 17 for me and my bride! Kids were at aunties so we went to a spin class then swam some laps. Coffee afterwards! Never would have predicted this 17 years ago!

I also bought her the 12 pack IPA beers because as we all know IPA's are the 17th anniversary gift.(pale ales are 16!)

So far the Rye ipa has been a pleasant surprise. A great summertime drink!

I think that is a sound taper plan. Definitly don't want to push the running, but biking never hurt anyone. Can't really make in fitnes gans in 2 weeks. I imagine more running would just make you sore given your limited run training so far.....although I suppose you could keep your run volume the same this week coming...maybe closer to 15 miles, doubt that would hurt you.

I've got to say - a 45 mile bike ride is pretty serious stuff especially in the rain - but to average almost 16 mph is pretty impressive.  I may have gone longer by a bit - but you were faster (how is that possible since your bike is so old that it could have been used in the filming of ETWink).

My ride was pretty good.  I felt pretty strong after I hit the half way point and then ran out of steam towards the end.  I was psyched that I still had enough in the legs to make it up the hill in the last mile at a pretty decent pace.  I was also pleased by the fact that my hips didn't hurt - although my feet did.

Finally - I may dial down my long ride this week.  I'm just concerned about losing two long rides with my race coming up in 8 weeks... Last week, I did 45 with 2000 feet of elevation gain - it almost killed me... I'll finish but 115 with 4000 feet is serious business....  If you take into account the two weeks for the OLY taper and factor in the 2 weeks for the Century - I've got 4 long rides left.

Final thought - would riding a century in 4 weeks help?  Not for time - but just to improve my confidence and get in a serious ride while I'm up here.

Happy Anniversary to you!  Not sure what's better - all the beers you tried or the fact that you got to enjoy some kid free time!

As for the anniversary gift - the fact that your wife got you a box of IPA's is proof that she is an incredible woman.  You know what my wife got me for my 13th?  She took me to have my back waxed!  To be fair, I asked for it... but I can think of a lot of things I'd rather have!

Yes.  With the 4 weeks, build 15 miles each week.  You just did 50, taper for your OLY.  Do your OLY, while you ride like 35 miles for a long ride that week.  Then the weekend following your OLY, you have 4 long rides left, go 65, 75, 85, 100 in the last 4 weeks before taper for the 115 miler.  up your intermediate rides as well, and make sure you take an off day the day after your long rides to stretch, and take an off day when your body tells you you need one.  Maybe 2 off days everyother week or so.

My .02

Training for 2 events is not ideal, and you've done a great job doing it, and you can and will ride up to 100 miles to train for century ride.Wink

a back waxing?  I bet that hurt like a son of a-
