uhcoog - 2012-05-17 10:33 AM OK so before I put my order through.  Is there a big difference between S! Caps and Saltstick?

There's not a huge difference.  Either are fine.

If you want popcorn then let me ask why you feel the need to supplement with sodium?

uhcoog - 2012-05-17 10:37 AM Well shoot.  I thought we were going to have a popcorn.jpg type of day here.

Bryan makes a really good point.  When talking about zones, its a lot more clear to talk about the purpose of the zone (e.g. recovery, aerobic threshold, tempo, lactate threshold) than the number because there are so many different ways of numbering zones.  I've seen aerobic threshold work be labelled Z1, Z2, and Z3 by different coaches/books.

1800 in the pool before the race this weekend. My training calls for a Z1 long run today but not sure I should do that or some Z2/Z3 work like I normally do before a race?

So, This weekend is a snake pool swim so as you all know it is based on your estimated time. Well today in the pool I was about 15-20 seconds faster than what I put down. Should be interesting. I assume most people are pretty curteous and will allow passing either in the middle or at the wall?

I am so excited! I can't wait for Sunday! So my awesome wife the other day saw me struggling to put on my MTB shoes(all that I had and was trying to save money) while I was working on transition stuff and she started to ask me what I was doing. Well I explained and then she goes "Why don't you just buy some tri specific shoes then? You don't play soccer with basketball shoes." So on that note I ordered some the same day I could have done without the smart comment though ;O)

Hope you have a blessed day everyone!

bryancd - 2012-05-17 10:23 AM Z1....where cycling fitness goes to die..

My Z1 (so Friel's Z2-Z3 -- aerobic threshold).

Better and why it's important to qualify what we mean when we say "Zone". I gave up up a while ago trying to make things fit in zones and just look at HR in term of various race intensities. Much easier and more applicable to the individual.

You're right (as much as it pains me to say that).

LOL!

What would you prescribe for a heavy and salty sweater in a very hot and humid area of the country?  They're to be used during long bike workouts FWIW.

Unless you have actually done a true sweat test to determine actual sodium and overall electrolyte loss there's no way of knowing if supplemts are needed. Amount of sweat or what salty residue on your clothing isn't an indicator of excessive loss and need for supplements. Neither is cramping. If you use a nutritional product such as gels and sport drink when it's really hot and humid, 99% of people are getting more then enough electrolyte and sodium via those sources. Taking in too much sodium can be very problematic to how you GI functions and you may be more likely to create GI distress instead of trying to solve for a problem yu don't know exists.

I would not advise mixing nutrition like that. Try the gels only and see how you feel.

Thanks Bryan the only reason I ask is because some say that Hammer Products don't have elcetrolyetes and Enduro Lyetes is there product to grecive them. I will see how just Gels goes this weekend on my 4.5 hour ride

Also realize Hammer Gels have VERY low sodium.

Hammer Gel - 25 mg

GU Roctane - 125 mg

Power Gel - 200 mg

That is why I did bring up the Question. I am going to try a Hammer Gel bottle 7 gels and water in a 24 oz bottle before I try a Roctance bottle I am getting through issues with the caffine in Roctane seeing I do not drink Cofee and only have a occasional soda the caffine has bothered me before.

Endurolytes also only have 40 mg of sodium per pill.  I would try a Power Gel Flask if the caffeine is an issue (Vanilla, Raspberry Creme and Kona Punch are Caffeine free).  I'm not sure if there is a Roctane flavor without Caffeine

You're going to love your road machine.  Very smooth and very progressive increases in resistance.  Relatively quiet, but the design directs vibrations into the floor.  I was forced down from the loft.  When I started cooking on high, the vibrations from the machine vibrated through the ceiling, raising a ruckus in the kitchen below.  I've been banished to the guest master bedroom on the ground floor.

<oliver voice>May I have some more speed please.

Speaking of Road Machine - opinion on Cyclops Fluid vs. KK Road Machine.  (If I already asked this before I apologize, I have a horrible memory.  Must be all the coffee!)

I have a Cyclops Fluid, old version, which I love.  We are going to get a 2nd trainer so my husband can also ride.  I was planning to get another Cyclops Fluid, the newer version, but read that the quick release latch can be a little wobbly.  And my friend has the newer version and hates it.  So I thought, ok, let's try the KK Road Machine, I know it always gets good reviews.  Both do actually, just the quick release latch seems to have negative reviews.

Any opinions from those that may have used both, and used the newer Cyclops Fluid.  Is it unstable?  Is the quick release latch a pain to use?

Karen, I don't have a lot of experience with trainers. I borrowed a cheap and loud magnetic trainer 2 winters ago, and this winter I bought the KK Rock n Roll fluid trainer. Runs about $500, but I absolutely love the the fact the bike can rock back and forth and it dont sit stiff on the trainer like other trainers do. Check out some YouTube videos on it. It's my recommendation.

Easy recovery stuff today (ride and run). HM on Sunday morning.  It has been pretty chilly around here, but it looks like things are changing.  High of 80 on Sunday.  Woohoo!  I love the summer!

My kids have 1 1/2 weeks of school left, and then I will not have to get up quite as early to do my workouts, as they'll sleep a little longer in the mornings.  That's exciting.  Off to Gordie's preschool music observation...

Flip flopped my Friday and Sunday workouts.  Long ride today.  It's so nice it's getting lighter earlier.  Averaged close to 20 mph at an easy pace.  Makes me very happy.  Now time to eat, get cleaned up and head out to IMTX
