Good morning fellow space travelers, I have a question.  I know some folks do two workouts a day - is it bad or otherwise ill advised to do two run workouts in a day?  If so, why?  I know some folks do a run and a bike.
thanks

Duane I'll leave your question to be ansered by our resident experts.

I too have a question.  Does anyone have soreness in their forearms after biking?  Any idea on how to help eliviate that or make my forearms stronger?

Helen- so glad you brought the yellow shoe being a good choice.  I thought I was the only one.  Was quite embarrassed by the whole experience.  What is better, just letting it fly or going in the bushes?

1st - Kelly - eww....bushes man!  (just my opinion)
2nd -Kevin - thanks -- I am running slooooow anymore anyway for some reason.  Not sure if its the cold or what.  My plan is shot anyway since I didn't get to the Y over lunch.  I am not even sure how much I am supposed to do today.  My desk is such a mess.  Better get back to it.

I don't like this at all.  No, sirree.  Not the least bit.  Helen's thread was almost at the bottom of page 2.  *gasp*  THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!

Oh thanks for the bump Philthy!

Very high mileage runners will often do two a days. But keep in mind that I am talking about VERY high mileage dudes.
Two a day workouts are indeed very common.....but mostly different sports. I will do a swim and run....or run and bike or swim and bike.

Better I think to plan out your week and get your runs done rather than trying to "catch up" on them if this is what you are trying to do............it could be a recipe for injury.

Kelly... I have a question for you. Are you riding in aero position? Or is this from riding a standard road bike?

If this is from riding a standard road bike then I can give my take on things. Yes, I do get sore forearms occasionally. However, this only occurs on rides that are longer then 2 or 3 hours... and will get better the more I get used to riding long.

My recommendation would be to have the fit checked on your bike. If fit is to aggressive for your riding style, you will be putting too much weight on your arms... and this will tire them out. If the fit is fine, then you need to move around on the bars more. Only stay in one position for 10 minutes at the most. Also, try to relax your shoulders and use your core more to support your body weight.

I hope you get this figured out... having sore arms after a ride is no fun.

As for the peeing during the run/bike... that all depends on your comfort level. I've never had to do it....and knock wood I never will...  if I do have to go, the comfort of a bush or porta-potty is by far preferable to running/biking in your own waste. Again... that's just my opinion.

The first time I pee'd  on my bike was during a HIM bike relay I did. It was a 58 mile course instead of the usual 56. I was flying...and knew if I kept it up I was going to make my goal of sub 3. No way in gods green earth was I going to STOP.
I used to think it was gross. It is NO big deal...trust me! Urine is  sterile.

Thanks for sharing Helen

As for the forearm issue.  I did ride a different bike in the indoor tri.  They were the ones from the bike shop set up on the trainers.  That could be the problem.  I did have this problem when I got my bike last year.  Once I put on aero bars I was fine.  I didn't think that a 15 minute ride would make that much of a difference.

Woke up late today, or should I say got out of bed late, I love the snooze.  Got in a 1.6 mile run.  Good way to test out the new shoes.  They felt fine.  My new goal is to not crawl back in bed after I turn off the alarm.

Morning all!!!!!

Duanne, running in split sessions during one day is not something I have ever done. I would have to agree with Kevin, you will probably be tired and need to take it easy so that you dont get injured. Have fun and enjoy. Let us know how it goes!

As for the yellow sneaker....I did the same HIM Helen did. I did it as an individual and you didnt have a choice on the run course as there were NO port-a-pots for the entire 13 miles! One person used the woods and got poisin ivy!!! On the bike in a long race, I just let it fly. Of course I am always careful/polite, and make sure no one is close behind me. It beats waiting for a port-a-pot to be available on the course.

Sore arms on the bike??? Probably due to using the different bike. Fit is everything!!!!!!That being said, I really believe that you should buy a bike based on comfort. I am NEVER going to be front of the pack so the benifits of areo will probably not make a difference in my finishing times. BUT if I am comfortable I will be able to perform my best on race day!

Off today for a 10K run and some time on the drainer!

Morning everyone... I think my headache is gone. My neck is a little sore from the massage, but that will go away. I took a break yesterday from training and just vegged on the couch. I think I needed that... feeling a little more spry today.

I'm thinking back to all my long distance cycling events and can only think of one or two times when I've actually had to use the ditch or porta-potty to relieve myself. During my HIM it was only after 6 hours did I have to use the porta-potty on course (still one hour from finishing). I don't know what it is... as long as I void before any long distance event, I can go for hours and hours without having to go again. I think the key is being able to balance the intake with the output. For me, I sweat an enormous amount, so I have very little water to pass thru the bladder when I'm riding.

An example... this past summer, I had my bicycle along to a cottage while we were there for the week. In order to give the family more room for the drive home I biked home. This was a solo 176 km (~110mile) ride. It wasn't extremely hot (thank goodness), but it was still summer. I did that ride in about 6 hours of riding (7 hours total time). I drank about 6 litres of gatorade/water... and stopped for food a couple times. In that entire time, I didn't pee once. I never felt thirsty and was always sweating (or dripping from rain showers)... so as you can see. It is possible to ride long distances with out needing to relieve oneself.

Of course everyone is different and I'm not going to judge anyone if they need to stop to pee... or if they go on the bike. Just don't ask me to clean your bike.

Bingo. Perhaps this is my issue. I do NOT sweat. So all the fluid in has to come out in another fashion!

It was a gorgeous sunny afternoon in West MichiganCool  I skipped yoga and went for an outdoor run.  Love that feeling of freedom, like Helen said in an earlier post not worried about distance or time just running for the joy of it.

I stopped by the ski hill, on the run, to watch my family.  My daughter was definitely inspired by last nights downhill race.  She was riding her edges pretty hard.  Watch out Lindsey Vonn.
Have a good night and a happy Friday.

Wait....what is that?  Is it a Suzie sighting????   Why....yes it is!!!

Hello all....flying in to touch down briefly while catching up from last week's and getting ahead for next week's traveling fun.

I ran a lot of 2 a day runs during my racing years.  The purpose is to help break-up the high mileage runs so as to not overload the body at one time.  I only had 1 long day a week so to speak of where mileage in a single run was over 13 miles.  When I did a 12 mile day.  My AM runs were never longer than 4 miles and the were VERY EASY.  They were considered shake-out runs to help with recovery from the hard workout from the day before.  Double workouts were typically ran after a speed day.  I never did anymore than 3 doubles per week.  Double workouts, as Helen mentioned, should never be used to "make up" mileage.
