The current belief is that the little units inside a kidney (nephrons) work individually from one another and self regulate their own blood flow which then basically determines what the kidney is filtering/how much is being filters/how much urine to make/etc. My project is basically challenging this: we say that the nephrons actually "talk" to one another (for lack of a better word) and that this cross talk then determines how a group of nephrons function. The kidney is intimately involved in blood pressure regulation so I am using a laser that measures blood flow in specific regions of interest and seeing how changing blood pressure (low-high) and using ACE inhibitors (captopril, ramopril, all the "pril" drugs) affects the blood flow in the regions of interest. Our idea is the regions of interest that are directly adjacent to one another should be more alike on another than ones that are not adjacent--adjacent meaning that there is crosstalk occuring and should be more similar. So basically I am imaging the kidney and taking a whole bunch of measurements while reducing blood pressure down to 65mmHg and bringing it up to about 120mmHg. ^^Does it make sense? Prob not...haha Actually it makes perfect sense. have you found out if they are "talking" yet? What is the practicality of this? and as an aside, do kidney cells regenerate? I seem to remember that they don't or are very slow to do so. Haha. Ok...I have difficulty explaining things sometimes. My directional skills are like: "just go over htere and then turn that way and then that way" Are they talking: Don''t know for sure yet, maybe-- the math is beyond my realm of capacity and needs to go to a biostatisician to interpret statistical significance of similarity or difference between regions of interest. My preliminary analysis is that "yes, it looks like they are talking" haha. Practicality--disease states (hypertension, diabetes) impair autoregulation. We know this because these disease states result in tissue damage which then impairs kidney function. This cross talk is thought to be an important modulator of blood flow dynamics due to pressure insults and helps to protect the kidney from damage as well as regulate blood pressure. The problem with the kidney is we just don't understand enough to adequately clinically treat renal disease. Literally there are about 5 drug classes and then dialysis/kidney transplant is the only answer. Its beyond the realm of my project and really the whole grant, but the aim is to set groundwork to be able to treat renal disease better in clinic. Regeneration: Yes, kidney cells do have a certain ability to regenerate, but only specific types and it depends on the time of an "insult". Acute tubular necrosis (ATN) is a condition that will occur if the kidney does not receive enough blood/oxygen. When this happens a specific cell type in the nephron--tubular cells--will die and slough off and end up in the urine as "casts" that can be detected with urineanalysis. These cells will regenerate slowly and it takes about 4 weeks for people who experience this to get back normal kidney function. Other cells don't regenerate--they will become damaged and then if the insult continues long enough scar tissue builds up in some cases or holes develop and you end up with protein in the urine, blood cells, etc--basically impairs the kidney's ability to do its job. The kidney can generally deal with more acute insults--BP spikes, drugs, etc unless pre-existing problems exist. Hope those answer your questions? Haha |

Kidneys and livers are usuallly the first organs that are attacked by environmental toxins. Though, I spend more time caring about critters other than humans that are out there. Lets talk amphibians. My favorite indicator species. On that note. I am done for the day. Talk to you later, Mindy. |

The animals that are the first to get sick? My first research ever was using bull frogs...they are sneaky, scary buggers...I remember the first time I had to go get one from the animal care unit alone...reaching into the dark cage...ahhh *shiver...it BIT me!! Those suckers can move fast in the water...haha... |

Champion 6656 | Subject: RE: Run your azz off in July Ghoulies!!! So did a short bike before supper and then went for a swim. Funny story/ WICKED AWESOME! story... I started my warmup as per usual--500-400-300-200-100...I don't know why I like this warm up, but I do and when I am done I have 1500m done...Its generally just ez-strong max and gets me feeling the water. Anyways for the FUNNY part...I started the main set I had planned. 8x100 @ 145, 3x100 rotate fast 25 front to back + 100fast + 3x100 rotate fast 25 back to front + 100fast...funny part was right when I started the set I was listening to a song by Madonna and David Guetta called "Revolver"...haha...So I have affectionately named this set...yes..that's right..."Revolver"...I love sets with names...well I love most sets with names..."Triple Death/Dead and Bury" are sets with names that I do not appreciate. For the WICKED AWESOME part: The fast 100's I went 1:16 and 1:15!! YAAAAAAAA!!! Been so long since I have actually done this. Probably 5 yrs now...I was only able to hit 1:17/1:18 when I went back to club last year. Yaaaaaa REVOLVER! |

Champion 16743 Somewhere I can be nekidd | Subject: RE: Run your azz off in July Ghoulies!!! So my run never happened last night. I could not get the kiddos to cooperate and get out the door. I thought about running later in the evening, but then decided that if I ran last night I wouldn't be ready to run again this morning, and I can't run tonight. I will run Friday now instead of taking it as a scheduled rest day. There was an accident at the intersection down below my house this morning so that changed my running plans. I ran one of my hilly routes again this morning. It is a loop that would bring me to the intersection where the accident was on my way home. I figured if I got that far and the road wasn't clear yet I'd just cut through a hay field to get home. Everything was gone though by the time I got back. I tried a different yoga dvd this morning, Yoga for Strength. My arms and shoulders are still burning. I love downward facing dog, but I'm not used to having to hold it for 2 minutes. |

Almost slept in but I knew I would be mad at myself if I did! Glad I didn't! FYI - If you are a man you should not be wearing a jacket that has Cheerleader Mom stitched on the back of it - made my day seeing that this morning. We don't care what you wear Bill, we love you for who you are. |
