Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Contrary to popular belief, except for "working dogs" like Australian shepherds and the like, the bigger the dog, the lower the energy needs. The up side for small dogs is that they don't take up that much room. Most people don't take any time to train little dogs because they can physically control them, which is why many of them get a bad rap. Then again, some of them are just plain yappers. The AKC and Humane society often recommend medium size to larger dogs to apartment dwellers who are themselves active. |

My husband always said he didn't want a small dog. Peanut has changed his mind, though! He is totally nutty over her! LOL How big is Peanut supposed to get? I think 15-20 pounds is about is small as I'd go, but I'd consider smaller if it was mild mannered. Chihuauas and dogs of that size tend to drive me batty. I think Peanut will be between 10 - 15 lbs. Yapping would drive us crazy too. Fortunately, Peanut rarely barks even when excited, and isn't neurotic like so many little ones. Personally, I think part of it is her being a mix and part of it is just her playful but laid-back personality. We really have lucked out with her. ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() While we are talking dogs. I have a Malamute (sp?)...well she is actually my Dad's. She just showed up one day on our back deck at home and she kept coming back and just sitting there. My Dad finally figured out where she belonged and kept having to take her back. The guy had a farm just up the road and when he moved he came and asked my Dad if he would like to take her because she was used to the area. She is pretty old now. Not sure how old. I'm not the biggest animal fan (specifically dogs--I've had a few incidents somewhere in the past I think) and I still won't let her jump on me when she is playing. She knows though now and doesn't do anything too crazy to me. She is pretty chill...no barking (apparently this goes with the breed), she sometimes wakes up at night and howls but not too often. Some of the things she does are pretty funny though. |

Most small dog owners don't care if their dog jumps up on someone. I work very hard to make sure my lab doesn't jump on people. I will work VERY hard to make sure Milo doesn't jump on people. It isn't acceptable with any dog, but people don't think much about it with smaller dogs. |

The AKC and Humane society often recommend medium size to larger dogs to apartment dwellers who are themselves active. My parents had an English bulldog once. It had the funniest/coolest personality of any dog I have ever been around but it was also the epitomy of low energy! This is probably one of those "you had to be there" stories but m?y fav?orite story involving it happened while I was visiting home after college. At the time, they also had a Newfie mix, which was decidedly not high strung either. Something was out back in the woods behind our house and when I let them out, the Newfie took off and barked all the way to the back edge of the property to chase it away. The bulldog jogged halfway there, barked twice, looked at me, looked at the back edge of the property, decided everything was in-hand and then headed back to the door and stood beside me. It took the Newfie a little while longer to come back so the Bulldog and I just stood there, side by side, looking out into the backyard and waiting.?? |

With her it is no big deal if I am wearing sweats or jeans, but I would not be happy if I was wearing nice clothes or if she jumped on the grandchildren, so I teach her not to jump up at all. However, it is harder to be consistent because she is so little that it is easier to pet her if she is reared up on her hind feet. ![]() |
