Fred - that is incredibly sad.  I remember Rick really well, cause I always paid attention to what he had to say.  I know his posts were regarded as more ST than BT by some, but I always found his posts helpful - and you always knew where he stood.  I'm sorry for your friends' loss.

Kathy - here's hoping that you quickly get through whatever is going on.

Good thoughts going out to both of you.

Had a big week last week due to some extra biking I was able to do in the beautiful weather we had for about a day here in Baltimore.  Swim was a little lower than I hoped, mostly due to a poop incident at the Y...and no, it wasn't me.  Run was on track - long run yesterday and a tempo run mid week and the rest easy.  This week I'll probably keep the bike to 3 - 3.5 sessions (3 for Jorge's plan and if anything the 0.5 will be an easy 30 min spin), 5 runs, which has become pretty standard, and try to hit the pool 4 times but with lower yardage/session.  Right now, I'm enjoying my President's Day off with some serious laziness.  If I get laundry done before my broomball game tonight I'll get to the pool for a quick swim, but if not I'm ok with the swim total dropping to 3x this week.

PS - anyone with an iPhone/Android play Words with Friends? I'm jsiege11 - look me up if you want some competition.

Good morning all-trainer ride at 4:45 this morning.  My daughter's HS soccer season has started so it looks like more early morning workouts since she will have games a couple of times a week. UGH! I really dont mind working out early but getting out of bed early is never easy.  Hope everyone has a good Tuesday.

Fred Doucette - 2011-02-22 1:25 PM We are off to Disney world in a few hours. We are driving, so will be out of touch for a few days. I feel like we have lost some people in this thread a bit that were posting earlier and feel a bit bad about that. Maybe you guys will get some good discussions going in the next few days? Take care team!

Have a great trip.

I have not been writing a lot in this thread, but I am following it every day.
I just dont feel that I have had a lot to contribute with, so im not lost, just not posting much Laughing.

Fred - have a great trip.  Disney should be fun with the kids.

Randy - 4:45am, ugh, not fun.  Although that may be me tomorrow, as I have an AM flight to St Louis and am there till Friday.  Seems everything is getting in the way of training this month.  I was so proud of my Jan bike numbers, but they've completely fallen in Feb.

And then I'm off on vacation.  I know, shouldn't complain, and I won't - I'm really looking forward to getting away.  I'm heading to Cuba with just my wife while the kids are left to fend for themselves with the grandparents (not sure who'll come out worse from that week).

Kind of quiet here-5 miles at 5:00am on the treadmill this morning.  First time I have thrown in a few intervals in awhile. Right calf feels "ok" but still tight despite tones of stretching/sticking/and rolling.

Ok folks-Fred is going to be dissappointed in us if we don't get a little more active here.  I'll go along with Rob's statement that having little or nothing to say never held me back from chiming in. So, I'll throw out a topic.  In doing triathlons or sports in general have you found an item or piece of equipment that has performed beyond your expectations.  You know one of those things that everytime you use it you think "someone was really on their game when they designed/made this....." Not necessarily a bike or some other major piece of gear... could be some shoe inserts you really like, a watch you can't live without, a great pair of running shorts.....  Here are my 2:,

E-motion rollers-great alternative to regular trainers. Kind of pricey when I bought them at around $700 but in the last 1.5 years I have probably put over 5000 miles on them.  Don't have to switch out tires/wheel when going outside for a ride. Very smooth with nice  magnetic resistance unit and a very "road like" feel.  They are not as hard to learn as regular rollers and I can ride in aero while watching dvd with no problems.  I have put a drop of oil on the spindles 2-3 times but no other maintance thus far.  Only negative is you cannot adjust the magnetic resistance "on the fly". Not a big deal as I don't mess with it much.  I have found a setting where speed/power are consistent with what I see on the road so I just leave it there.  www.insideride.com

Quik-Rack bike rack from  1upusa. I have a Honda Accord and was looking for a hitch rack.  This one is secure, extremely well built and you can put the bike on/off in 5-10 seconds.  Again kind of pricey at around $299 but so easy to use.  Removes easily from the hitch and does everything you need in a bike rack with no straps to deal with.  www.1upusa.com

Anyone else??

I really don't need something to spend another $850, but what makes rollers (or these specifically) so special?  How are they easier to ride/learn than regular ones?  I assume you get on-the-fly resistance changes through switching gears on your bike - do you get enough variation to do intervals (say to spin at the same cadence but range from 60% to 120%+ of CP)?  I thought that was a knock against rollers I've heard.

My perineum protection package (PPP for short) is my can't live without suite of equipment.  For inside it includes my Kurt Kinetic Rock & Roll trainer.  It's got some give that you get outside, but don't find on static trainers.    A slight bounce and rocking motion it allows makes me much more comfortable.  http://www.kurtkinetic.com/rock-roll-p-112-l-en.html.  The other items include chamois cream (useful all the time but much more important on the trainer), Adamo Road saddle and the "right" pair of bibs/shorts.  I'm hit or miss with the chamois of bib/shorts, some do really well all around (my LGs, Giordanas and Sugois) and some add too much pressure in aero, but are great for road biking (my performance bike branded ones).

My Smith sunglasses are my other.  I've never had a good pair of sunglasses, they either hit my eyelashes which bothered me a lot, they didn't protect from the wind enough or the frame would be right in the middle of my view when in aero.  I picked these up in the classifieds here because they're a brand I've found that I've liked for fit.  They are perfect - comfortable, block wind and can't see any frame no matter what position I'm in.  I love them! (They aren't the most stylish, but I'm only wearing them for function so I don't care).

I like all my pacing gadgets...310xt and my Power meter and head unit. I've switched brands and types over the year.

One of my favorite aspects of racing and training is trying to execute well so things that help me do that help.

Other things...

Timex Ironman watch for swim splits..moved from women's to man's watch so I can read it while swimming as numbers are much larger without bifocals and it has 100 laps instead of 50 for women

Crocs getting to/from pool and shower in at Y

Polar insulated water bottles- keep drinks cool much longer

My prescription sunglasses with bifocals so I can see watch, gps or powermeter head

Computrainer especially in erg mode so I can dial in my watts and just execute as it holds watts exactly there no matter what your cadence is

wko+ program to download power files to analyze them

CW-X compression shorts to run in

Headsweat hats for running when warm

Kids are on winter break and have been very busy. It has put a damper on training as I don't have big chunks of time to do things.

Yesterday my FTP intervals went well but like Fred I forgot to calibrate on my PM so first 15' interval felt a little easier than it should..watts were only off maybe 4-5 but at FTP 4-5 feel like a lot.

Today doing 2 hours ride with high zone 3 intervals and run.

Tomorrow I fly to FL to help a friend move to TX...it will be fun and nice to be in warm weather.

I need a new bike helmet. Any suggestions?

My Giro I've used since 2007 and the roc loc (adjustable fit part) was broken flying home from IMFL. I figure with 15K+ miles using it probably good idea to get a new one instead of replacing the broken piece.

Joe-not sure I will describe the setup very well but basically you have a set of rollers on a frame that are "suspended" within another frame. This makes them easier to ride as the rollers move with your movement on the bike where as with regular rollers there is no movement of the frame. Videos on the website do a better job than I do of describing but basically this allows the rollers/frame to move forward and back a bit as you move on the bike. The rollers do not actually move around but the frame they are mounted in does.  I have done all kind of intervals on them including short out of the saddle sprints.  That takes a little getting used to but its not hard after doing a couple.  You are right that you can of course adjust resistance by changing gears including reaching intervals at well over FTP. Magnetic resistance just adds option for hill type of work.    My setup is with the rollers in the garage next to a workbench.  DVD player, water bottles, towels on the workbench and a big fan in front of me.  I have spent many happy and/or miserable hours there depending on the quality of my workout...

Have to agree on the chamois creme!

Fred Doucette - 2011-02-23 11:39 AM  We are stopped just south of the SC border and now heading to st. Augustine.

UGH! If you are on I-95 I hope you didn't stop at "South of the Border" What a dump! Although I wish I had the $$ they spend on billboard advertising.  Hang in there Fred, you will soon be in the land of $6 sodas/water/fries and the infamous $15 turkey drumstick-DISNEY!!!! Safe travels.

Fred Doucette - 2011-02-23 12:39 PM Hey great job with the conversation guys. We are stopped just south of the SC border and now heading to st. Augustine. We should get to Orlando by 7pm. I plan to do a 1 hour run while the family shops at the outlets in St. Augustine (yes I am a compulsive triathlete). Have eaten T McDonald's twice in 24 hours and don't feel really good about it, but when driving with kids you gotta be realistic.

Isn't this redundant?  Kind of like saying "extinct dinosaur" or "awkward engineer"?

Check bonktown.  They've got some Uvex ones listed from time to time (3.0 and 3.1) that seem nice and "breezy".

Hey Fred, being compulsive is what makes you excellent! I am just a bit south of you and am where 95 actually ends and turns into highway 1 to the keys. 83 degrees! Think might try to do an open water swim in the ocean
