Michael/Michael/Randy, thanks for the tips! You answered my questions exactly. I have another tri coming up in about 4 weeks and I am really going to hammer the bike between now and then. I swear, this mentor group is the best $0 I've ever spent; thanks so much!

Does anyone else have a saying or mantra that helps when you feel you are hitting a wall?

I usually tell myself that every painful step I take today is one less I have to take on race day. Also, HTFU is a good one. I've thought about putting that on my stem so I can see it while riding.

Of course, there's always, "Shut up legs!!!"

Managed to get in a high intensity trainer ride after work.  This evening I did an 8 mile run, with a full effort sprint of 1/4 mile for each mile.  Did this on the treadmill.  Normally like to so these types of workouts on a track but it was 99 degrees outside! What a great workout.  I was surprised at how fast I did the entire run.

Seems like my paces are all over the place.  On average I do probably 9:15-9:20 min miles on my long runs.  When I run with others I always go much faster.  In fact I did a 25 K and surprised myself with a time of 2 hours 4 min (8:04 pace).  When running alone, I know I don't push as hard as when with others.

I usually run with music as I feel it helps get me motivated.  Sometimes when tiring I say HTFU along with my cadence.  Really helps.  Does anyone else have a saying or mantra that helps when you feel you are hitting a wall?

Jimmy-great run! Unfortunately, my run tonight was focused on track intervals. It was 95, sunny and had rained an hour prior.  Brutal! You are wise to keep your easy runs easy.  That's part of the big picture of building that aerobic base and working the legs without it costing quality in the harder workouts.

Nice run, Jimmy.  I ran i the heat, but very easy and manageable.  Intensity in the heat is tough!

I don't really have any mantras during training.  During IM it's "no Gu for dinner".

One thing to keep in mind for the folks just getting into triathlon is that it takes time to get faster.  Don't try to do too much too soon/often.  You will end up injured.  Give it time.  Very few people start out fast unless they have a background in either swim, cycling or running.  I think people typically start to see significant gains after 1-2 years of consistent training.  It takes time for the body to adapt and you learn more the longer you are in the sport.

Here is my history since beginning.  Based on USAT ratings system (not a great system IMO) but a measure over my tri career.

First year  USAT  rating 71-72

Second year 74-75

Third year 78

This year currently at 81.09. Hopefully will end the year in the 82-83 range

The two things that are of utmost importance in your training are quality and consistency.  Keep easy days easy!  They play a significant role in the big picture.

Excellent advice, Randy.  I'm going to take it and go for a fairly easy ride.

I just did something pretty stupid.  I got a flat while riding and I was supposed to be home soon so my wife could go do some shopping.  I was already running a bit late, so I thought I'd save time and call her to come get me.  Then I took the bike shoes off and started walking towards home to meet her.  Well, I guess I didn't realize how hot and rough the pavement was.  Or rather, I didn't notice in time.  After about 5 minutes of walking, I realized that my feet were pretty torn up and burned.  Ugh.  I've got 3 blisters on one foot and 3 on the other.  I was't supposed to run today anyway, so it won't really affect training, but I still feel stupid.  And my feet hurt!  Embarassed

Michael-OUCH on the blisters. That pavement must have been hot!

Had a pretty good swim workout at lunch. Main set was 5X300 on 5:10.  Was able to do most in the 4:48 range with the last one @4:42.  While I do not look forward to these types of sets I think they are good for olympic distance to HIM swim prep. Just enough rest to catch your breath and the HR to drop a bit before taking off for the next set. Effort level feels consistent with what I expect for racing those distances.  Not super hard but solid/steady pace.

50 minute run tonight...thunderstorms in the area are likely to make it another super humid evening.

Ouch, Michael! I hope it's manageable for your next training session.

What is this... speed that you speak of, and where do I buy some? LOL! I'm totally waiting for that ship to come my way. I'm working on it.

Speaking of speed, still slow as molasses on my swim. I did shave 10 seconds off of last week's 1500 and this week's. Still averaging a 2:50 per 100. Oi. Swim coach is back though so hope getting back to swim team and drills will help.

There is race with two different distances on an island next door in November that I've got my eye on. Husband should be home by then, and all the locals are talking about going over there. Big ol' party race, for sure. Would love to do it, so still getting my swimming in just in case. I do have a mountain biking date with a girlfriend at lunch today, so trying to get the biking going too.

Oh, and my mantra for years now has been "I feel good, I feel fine" to the strike of my feet, and when I want to walk away "Bud-wei-ser" and "Where's mah wine", hehe.

Michael, that sounds painful! Hope they heal quickly. Blanda, love the mantra!

I didn't get a real workout in tonight, but I did go to an informal swim coaching lesson. A local guy met some of us and gave us some drills and then critiqued our swim form...I've never felt slower or less adequate, but he was incredibly helpful. I looked up our last local race and he did get the overall #1 swim time, over the Masters and Open even, so he definitely knows his stuff! My back is feeling better, not 100% but close, so I'll run in the morning and get back in the swing of things.

That's great Blanda!!

Michael, hope your next run is not affected by those blisters.  That sounds painful!

Today was a hard swim, 10 x 200's at all out pace, fast for me but slow for most.  Then drills.  Followed up by a 5.2 mile easy recovery run.  That's it for the day.  Time for bed.

I'm starting to get interested in doing a Rev 3 race.  Has anyone done one?  They sound fun.  There is one in San Dusky Ohio, same location as the Cedar Point Amusement Park.  Sounds like a great venue and a way to get my teenage sons out for some fun.

I'm feeling so triathletic this week! Two days of run/swims, and today got a hard mountain bike ride in with my friend, and she invited me to a group track session. Oh my goodness, I'm so awkward in groups. I get foot in mouth disease, but I think this will be great to push me for speed. Plus, they all bring their kids. They play together in the middle where there is a soccer field while the parents train. I'm going to give it a try.

Morning all.

Jim -- I've never done a Rev3, but I'v e heard very good things about them.  There's a half in SC, at a very pretty venue (nice lake, rolling foothills, etc., that I'm considering.

Blanda -- I'm awkward in groups too.  Sounds like maybe the dynamic in your soon-to-be running group might be pretty nice, though, with kids playing and all.

I popped my blisters last night (I know people say you're not supposed to do that -- I alwys do it anyway, and they feel so much better afterwards).  I think I'll be good to run this evening.  Swim at lunchtime.  Other than that, I've got a boatload of work to do, so, until later...   Enjoy your day, everyone.

Jamie-glad the back is feeling better.

Jim-good job on the swim and run.  Looks like your training is going well.  I've never done a Rev3 race but have heard/read good things about them.  If you have not done so read some of the previous race reports here on BT.  Should give you a good feel for what folks think.

Blanda-the track workouts sound like a good way to get a run in and have an activity for the kids. "Triathletic" thats a new one....but I like it!

Michael, sorry to hear about those blisters. Sounds painful! Good luck on a speedy recovery!

Jamie, great questions about the bike, and I'm so glad to be in a group with such a wealth of knowledge to answer them. I know my lungs and legs can handle more biking, but I'm so frustrated that my backside is almost too sore to stand it! I've been cutting back to once every 3 days in order to give it time to heal. Should I just train on a stationary bike at the gym to at least train my legs and lungs?

Did a 3x workout yesterday. Slept like a baby last night I think I'll rest today and get back to it tomorrow. Just as well since I have to travel to Lexington for work today! Although I feel dirty when I look at my workout log/calendar and there's an empty day Undecided

Morning! On the way to the airport this morning. Our son is flying out to meet our daughter in South Carolina. They'll spend a few days at USC (Michael's part of the country!) before driving her car back to Texas. I can't believe how quickly the last few years have gone by. We'll have the entire family home together for almost a month. I'm really looking forward to it.

Swim this morning. Little track workout this afternoon.

Nate- just out of curiosity why are you doing 3 workouts in a day? Over achiever??? lol...

Blanda, first "verklempt" and now "triathletic".  Love the new words to add to my vocabulary!  I keep waiting for a good time to integrate the word verklempt into conversation but I'm holding back for that right moment.....

As in:  "when coach said one more interval I got all verklempt".

Looks like 'swim and a track workout' is the flavor of the week.  I'm doing that today too.  Swim...check.  Finally a pretty good one too.  I'm going to try a pretty tame track workout this evening and see how that goes -- my legs are already tired!

Is it sore as in you have saddle sores, or sore as in bruised, or sore as in muscular soreness?  Those are three different problems.

You probably said this already, but I'm forgetful -- how long and how much have you been riding?  You might have problem with fit, or you might just need to try out some other saddles.

Stationary bike in the gym is second best, but definitely much better than nothing.

Hey folks-hope ya'll don't mind but I have extended an invitation for someone else to join our merry group.  Nick was in my mentor group last Summer and is currently training for IMFL.  I told him that we had several people (of questionable sanity) scheduled to do IM races this Fall and that he was welcome to come aboard.  Nick is from Jacksonville and really got into triathlon last Summer.  So, some of the folks going through the early stages of their tri career's might be interested in Nick's journey from sprint to IM.

Easy treadmill run at lunch and then a hard 1.5 hour interval session scheduled on the bike this evening. Legs are pretty beat up right now but hopefully will find some life for the ride tonight.

Feels like a sore bruised feeling on the muscle/bone. No saddle sores/skin issues to report yet.

Maybe I've done too much too soon. I've had the bike since Jul 3. I've logged all hours on it in my log book in BT so far.

At first it was quite a few days in a row.

On average, every other day, but since it's started hurting like this, I've left about 2 days rest in between workouts.

Thanks!

Nate
