Ok, I am a 'how does it work' kinda girl.  I go to the chiropractor and want to know 'how and why' my SI joint locks up.  Never mind just fix it, 'how' does it happen.  I'm sure my massage therapist likes the clients who just go to sleep, but I keep asking why/how/what if about all the muscles that are tight.  So, can someone please help me to understand 'why' running lots, even 'slowly', makes you run faster?  Is it that your body (muscles, tendons, ligaments) just gets used to the motion? Is it your brain saying 'ah man, we ran 100 miles in one week, we can run this 26.2 in 3:22'?  How, please?  (Please note: not disputing at all.  I can't do speedwork because my body won't tolerate it.  If I can get faster by running lots o' short distances, I'm in.  But I have need want to understand it.)

Oh look ... I seem to have written an article just about that ...

http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=2165

The article addresses endurance training in general for the three sports, but whatever it says goes even more so for running because of the higher impact and stress it places on your musculoskeletal system.

The article does also say to question like hell, so right on.

As for more frequent running, total volume being the more important factor than speed or even longest runs, I don't have the data at my fingertips. Much of that evidence has come from the mass experience of the thousands of runners who train that way and the results they've gotten.

It also comes back to that you can fit more volume in, ultimately, with greater frequency but shorter runs. The same physiological adaptations take place.

Long runs, and "speedwork" appropriate to one's recent continuum of running experience have their place. But for the vast majority of running, your body is going to respond the same way to a 3-mile run as it does the last 3 miles of a longer run. The major difference is that the longer run in total is going to break your body down more and take longer to build back from.

And I did read that article when I first started tri training .  I completely agree with the lower intensity training to avoid burnout/injury.  I live that!  But I cannot make my brain understand how training it to do one thing (low intensity) makes it do something different (race intensity) when you want it to.  When I trained for my marathon, I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that the longest training run I would be doing at race pace was 10km, when I had to do 42.2 of them on race day.  Did it work?  Yep, I missed my goal by only 1:45 (because I screwed up pacing at the beginning--didn't have my Garmin yet ).  So I know it does work.  But I still don't get it...

This is one of the things that I don't get:

Improves fat metabolism. In lower-intensity training, your body preferentially uses more fat than sugar as a fuel source, and the more you do, the more you are training your body to prefer fat for fuel. (Important for weight loss—the lower the intensity, the longer you can go, the more fat you will burn. Simplification, but fairly true). The concentration of enzymes that help convert fat into energy also increase.

So does the increased concentration of enzymes mean that they are recruited on race day?  Even if you are going at a higher intensity?

I hate it when I don't understand something...

Keep in mind too, that as your train it gets easier. As it gets easier your definition of slow changes...

and I'll let Yanti talk about the metabolism crap.

Yes, but relative to you.  You still end up running faster on race day, whatever your 'slow' is...

Chris, Brie.   You signed up yet? I hope so.

Dooooooooooooooooooooooo iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttt     !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW.

(worry later)

Oh Weebly One, when is your next tri?  Innocent

Oooooh, double busted!

i FORGOT THAT Janyne has an encyclopaedic knowledge of every race that every Manatee has logged.

Ok, so here's the thing. I cunningly decided to enter the Grafman olympic distance on 12th August without actually registering or parting with any money. This was because i was scared concerned that i may not be able to get ready in time for the event and also the idea of having to set off at 4am in time to sign in etc and then be knackered for the race itself. It was also the latest race i could enter before i go on my annual holidays, 5 days later.

However, my holidays have now been postponed by a few days, leaving the weekend of 18th/19th August also available as i fly out to Turkey on the Monday. This gives me 3 options and i welcome your thoughts as well as the usual abuse etc.

1. Go for the Grafman Oly on August 12th. It is 2hrs away. Also has HIM event running at the same time

2. Go for the Erewash Sprint Tri on August 19th (pool based) ready for this right now.

3.Go for the Udo's Choice Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon (olympic distance) August 19th. 1 hour away so more user friendly. Also gives me one week extra training.

So, comments....

That's my vote, now to see what the rest of the POD said, will it be decided by the time I catch up?

First, keep in mind those are educated guestimates for speed most of the time but yes. I vary EVERYTHING all the time. Speed, routes, shoes, food. Most of the time the speed is dictated by how I am feeling but I did make a conscious effort to 'pick it up' a couple times a week.

You're such a girl.

bcraht - 2012-07-18 7:21 PM If you were rich, and already had all the Tri gear you wantedLaughing, what would you spend your money on?   I'll start.  I would audit courses (cause I like to learn, but I HATE taking exams and writing papers) and I would buy books.  And build a library in my house, with a big fluffy chair, and a fireplace, and a ladder that moved so I could reach all my books.

It's only because writing "you're a moron" would get me kicked off BT. Furthermore, even morons should have a chance to change their ways and if I offer no further information, I rob them of that opportunity.

But they really should only get one chance. Because after dropping that ... the person is an intractable moron.

What does everyone have on their plate this weekend?

Tonight I'm going a local park where they are rebroadcasting TdF stage 17 and projecting it on a huge inflatable screen. Plus is has a beer garden. Now I'm just trying to find someone to go with me. All my friends say something along the lines of, "Bike racing ewwwwww"

Tomorrow I am going to the Cap hill block party, which is a music festival and then doing some other stuff around home. I was supposed to go camping with the fam but I just need some time to move at my own pace for a few days.

I've got a weekend full of errands/work...I work on Saturday.  I also need to get some new goggles, have to pick up paint (petsitter is going to paint the kitchen and family room while I away in Calgary), need to get the spare room ready for the petsitter, blah, blah, blah.  At least my local park (as in right across the street) is having the annual Fusion Festival--2 days of international music, food, dancing.  I can open my windows and hear the music, don't even have to leave the house!

The TdF/beer garden sounds fun!

That beer garden sounds awesome.

I have a few things I want to do this weekend, meet up for a group ride on saturday, get the yard work done so the HOA doesn't come after me, and finish fixing up the beach cruisers from my parents beach condo that had broken down are tops of the need to do.

A local brewery is doing it's one year anniversary tent party on saturday $3 pints plus free tastings of the more unusual stuff.

heh heh heh

Well, speaking of eye rolling, did you see that persons post in the thread you created to fatten my head? He said I should use a Garmin so that I can avoid walking the end of my marathon. Huh?

I think he missed the point.

Yeah, agarose ... it's okay, he's the font of both unsolicited and unuseful advice.

There are quite a few people, and quite a few posts, and I know you feel the same way because you don't post in Tri Talk much, where I want to ask ... "You have reading comprehension problems, don't you? I'm sorry about that."

WARNING

I have recently had my medications adjusted so if I seem meaner or snarkier than usual, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Or it's just my true self coming out. Whichever.

So it's not just me?  I get annoyed at some of the" WTF did he just say?" moments I have sometimes

Sorry I have been an infrequent poster as of late, trying to avoid BT while working because I want to impress on my 3 week fill in to get a good reccomendation but I have been working out mostly, missed yesterday due to a charity event at a brewery for the local shelter how do you say no to that?  Got a good ride in today and am posting it soon hope for a swim tomorrow.

On the cockroach front, we have palmetto bugs (term of endearment?), they are cockroaches that fly.

Okay, I am back from a ride with my son Cole.  He was great on the bike path.  It was the first time we had been to the path and he's never really ridden before.  We went 4 miles before he wanted to turn around.  Very cool.  Then on the way back he (not surprisingly) became tired.  And stopped dead in the middle of the path.  Yeah...I was riding my roadie (my mtn bike has a broken derailleur hanger) clipped in and didn't have time to unclip and stop.  Boom, my bars clipped his and down I went.  Kersplat!  My bike is fine and I'm overall good to go too.  Scraped up and bruised but no big deal.  Just another reminder why we ALWAYS need to wear a helmet.

Anyway, we finished the ride and Cole rocked out 8 miles.  I am so proud!  We'll go back for sure.

Now I just have to wait to see if its approved. Neither.  I think he was scared to say anything.  I laid on the ground for a minute then looked at him and said, "Cole, you can never just stop in the middle of the road.  Announce you are slowing and pull over."  I got up, picked up my bike, checked it and we moved on.  Nothing else to do or say.  Just one of those things that happens and we both learned from it.

My choice would me mythology I love that stuff personally but there is so much fascinating events/history in the crusades as well. Stories are always easier to remember so probably an easier class depending on the rest of your course load...
