Champion 16743 Somewhere I can be nekidd | Subject: RE: GHOULIES moving towards the islands. deehtz - 2012-10-22 10:24 AM ironannekidd - 2012-10-22 7:18 AM I'm bored this morning, so I'm reading about day packs: choosing them, packing them, etc. Some of the articles I have read about what to pack in a day pack would get you killed if you were stranded in the woods overnight, or for a few guys. In one article the author goes on a rant on why it is not necessary to pack food in your pack unless you are going to be out in the woods for a week or more. I STRONGLY disagree with this. You need nourishment. Also, when you are cold consuming calories can help warm you up. If you're undernourished and/or cold, you aren't thinking clearly. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that thinking clearly will help you get out of a bad situation. I understand some of the authors were trying to cut down the weight in the packs, but I do not think that a bag of beef jerky, some dried fruit, and some protein bars are really not too much to carry with you. I agree, the possible benefits outweigh any added weight a little bit of food might make! Some of the items people eliminated in order to save an ounce or 2 I thought was unnecessary. Could my pack be lighter? Sure. Will I survive if I'm stranded in the woods. You bet your sweet bippie I will. I go prepared! |

Champion 16743 Somewhere I can be nekidd | Subject: RE: GHOULIES moving towards the islands. I was looking at what to pack in a day pack this morning because it is hunting season in PA. I got to thinking about how many people go out into the woods, often in remote places, with nothing more than the clothes on their back, and a bow/crossbow/rifle. Most hunters I know actually know very little about surviving in the outdoors. A few years ago my husband was in upstate PA bear hunting with his dad and brothers. This is thousands of acres of woods. He got lost. He was wet. He couldn't find his way back. He eventually wandered onto some footprints and followed them to a pipeline he was familiar with that lead him to where he needed to be. His younger brother told me when he got back to the truck, after dark, he was shivering uncontrollably, and couldn't speak a coherent sentence. Um... that's not good. He does carry a backpack, but he really isn't prepared in case of an emergency. I am going to put a few things in it for him this year. Not a lot, just some basics. If he would be lost again, and isn't too stubborn to use what I've packed. He will be fine. |

We took a short survival class a couple of years ago. Learned a lot and revamped our day packs. We should take it again in order to refresh our memories. |

That's been going on for a long time! Do you use a neti pot? Ann, super exciting about Keri and the softball. Is it going any smoother with here current team? Melindy, get better fast! Kendra, enjoy story time! I had to laugh at you biting off heads like a ghoulie! Amy and Jules, and any other ghoulies, HI!!! Her softball season is over for now. She will play closer to home in the spring. She is actually excited about it, because she knew all the girls on the team last year, she goes to school with them. I don't think we are going to do the travel team thing until she is older. I was doing some researching, and kids are also seen by going to camps. There are 2 colleges nearby that hold summer camps, one of them being Gettysburg College, where my husband works. She can be a day-camper and go with him in the mornings. I spoke with some former travel team players and you have no other life than your travel team. She's 9. We like to keep active AND well rounded. I'm not going to commit her to anything that demanding until she is old enough to understand what is going on. I think doing it now could burn her out.
That does sound pretty heavy duty for 9 years old. That is great that she has access to ball camp! |

I think you need to go early to Key West and let the sun soak all infections out of you. I'll keep you company.Morning Ghoulies. I am going slow today. It looks like the sinus infection is BACK.... AGAIN!!! I have to find the root of this and fix it, it has been going on too long. Hopefully I will get some of the chores done I have to do, then we have a wake and a political function to go to. Also, hopefully, I will feel up to sitting around the fire-pit later this evening to watch comets. Have lovely days, all! |

Yes. The author said you would be hungry, and thinner, but you could survive weeks without food so you don't need to add the weight of food to your pack. |
