So, I got to the locker room of the pool, ready and excited about doing the new-ish workout I got from Coach Jodi last week when I realized I didn't have it with me. I set it by my bag, but in my early morning grogginess, I apparently left it at home. So, I did 10x100 yd. instead. Of course when I got out to the car I discovered that I had not left my workout at home, but only left it on the seat. Doh!!!

I had a nice ride on a hilly route yesterday and each time I struggled a bit, I thought of those of you who don't have any hills and it gave me inspiration to push through. Thank you no-hill-having-state- residents for helping me appreciate a good hill. I actually like hills, but this was a nice extra boost.

Fesslern- I totally knew what you meant, but what you posted was funny. "...first race of the week, next season". That's a long wait brutha'. Seriously though, good luck! What's on tap?

I'm not running at all right now. My duathlon took a toll on my Achilles, as I figured it would, and now I'm giving it time. All my fitness is coming from swimming and cycling. How's your health?

I'm doing the Horsey Hundred ride in May:

http://www.active.com/cycling/georgetown-ky/horsey-hundred-2011

Great event!  This will be my third year riding.  It's in Georgetown, KY and has a similar bike course to LOU.  Check it out, maybe some of you can make it.

I do plan to attend some of the iamtri rides, I "RSVP'd" for June 11th, July 23rd & Aug 6th.  Hope to see some of you there!

Good luck, Alan.

Fesslern--funny you should ask. I had another ART treatment yesterday, and my doctor and I think that the new orthotics that I have (one month now) may be the cause of my achilles issues.  I now have tightness in both achilles, but not pain.  However the orthotics helped end my shin splint issues.  Strange.  What to do, what to do.  Thanks to ART, I have much improved flexibilty in my ankle, but my doctor has me working on flexibility in my feet now--towel scrunches and a handball rolling my feet daily.

I am able to run and cycle the distances in my training, but he doesn't want me working on speed or running hills just yet.  With that said, I have backed out of a sprint distance that I was supposed to do in three weeks and may back out of a half mary I have planned to do at the end of June.  I've had my eye on breaking 1:40 at that race, but I don't think I am going to test it.  Afterall, IM Louisville is my A race.

How is your achilles issue?  I hope you are making progress.

2hr 30min repetitive brick "Cubed"...feeling good about power and endurance gains in the last month. Legs feeling much better then last repetitive brick 2 weeks ago. Heel not 100% but I was still able to run 7:08's for the first 15min hard race effort of the brick and no slower then 7:38's in the next 2 brick efforts, so happy with that.

Good luck Alan.  Remember that there is always a stiff headwind on the last 26 miles of the bike at White Lake.  Also put on some sunscreen for the run...there is zero shade.  Post your results when finished.

Adam- Good stuff.

It was nice here as well. Our first really good weather day in a long time. Sunny, 70 degrees, and next to no wind. I took advantage by putting in a 60+ mi ride. My goal was to stay relaxed, but steady, and finish feeling like I could keep going...and hopefully average 20 mph. I hit the mark on all counts!

However, the cherry on top is that I think I finally have dialed in my arm position! It wasn't perfect, but it was nearly so!

Did my first intermediate distance tri yesterday (1000M/18mile/4.6mile) did it in 1:55:11. The girl who won 3rd place overall crossed the finish line 20 seconds before me, so I won my age group. Happy with the race, needed that confidence boost that I can do well in something longer than a sprint.

Well, guys and gals, my first attempt at a HIM was pretty much a disaster.  Heavy fog caused the swim to be cancelled, so it got me off my mental game from the very start. I was happy with 2:45:00 on the bike but disappointed by a 2:13:xx on the run.  My mental state paired with cramping in the legs that started on the bike just killed me on the run.  With only 2 minutes in transitions, I finished the 69.1 miles in 5:00:xx.

Alan...that sucks. HOWEVER, from this point on when you are at a race and things happen to start to look grim, you will be able to say, "Well, at least it's not as bad as my first half."

It can only get better. Having said that, I'm sorry your first half was not uplifting. I bet you learned a lot nevertheless.

Great race Jillian. Alan remember this, even though you are disappointed with your performance, there are people out there who would be ecstatic with your times. The key is, you were there, you towed the start line and you finished. That's more than a lot of people can say.

Sam-Woops lol =X First race this saturday. Sprint in Bayville, nj. Legs are a little tired right now. Clocked 105 miles this past weekend. Race speed swim tonight.

Nashin-My Tibial Posterior Tendinitis is doing a lot better. I went from not being able to walk=>limp for a week=>easy training=>back in full swing.

I went for another bike fit recently and the fitter put wedges under my cleats because he thought i was overpronating on my pedal strokes. Let's hope that he fixed the problem. I have orthotics in my running shoes so it can't be that.

The pain still comes and goes but not nearly as bad as it was before. I've been strengthening as well with towel/standing calf raises.

I just tried out the Cobb V-Flow saddle at the bike fit. It is reallllllllly awesome. The fit and replacement of the Airone Tri 2 saddle have led to no saddle pain after 40+ miles. They want $170 for it though. =X CRAZY $$ Anyone have one for sale for cheaper?

Congrats, Jillian!  Alan, speaking from some past experiences, too, "the best laid schemes of mice and men oft go awry" --Robert Burns.   Sounds like you made the most of the situation, so congrats on that!

Ok, so now it's getting warmer in Michigan, but I need all I can get to feel the heat of what Louisville will be like.  Faster 5-mile run this afternoon with some hills near the end.  Ran this closer to what "race pace" is for me for the upcoming Fifth Third Bank Run this Saturday.  Funny, I keep wanting to call it the "Old Kent River Bank Run" from back-in-the-day.  When I ran it in in 1981, 1982, and 1983, my times were all about 1:35 to 1:40.  Now, after returning to Michigan in 2005, uh ... many years later and considerably older, all I could sqeeze out last year was about 2:15.  Well, I was about 20 pounds lighter then and had yet to acquire a thirst for finely crafted IPA microbrews ;  )  Looking forward to it as a good training/race thing to practice hydration/feeding more systematically.

Tailwinds, y'all!

@Alan,

2:45:00 is a great bike time at White Lake.  The run there is always brutal.  Congrats on finishing the race.  Never heard of the swim getting cancelled at White Lake.  Must not have been able to see the bouys from shore.  Onward and upward.

Todd-

Good luck this weekend. I too was running close to those times back in the day, but I my fastest was 1:40, I never saw a time in the 1:30's. My most recent honest effort was 1:47-ish. My wife is running the RBR this weekend as well. Incidentally, I also call it Old Kent now and again. However, I've gotten myself to say Riverbank, without giving in qualifier. It seems to work well.

You know, I'm pretty much directly east of you. I'm in Middleville/Caledonia. Perhaps a ride this summer at some point is in order. I'm curious about what races you will be doing other than the obvious.

Peace...Sam

Everyone-I found a website that has cycling decals...primarily words/names. I am very seriously considering getting something for my bike like Go Tri Sam. I can totally see The Cube on a certain somebody's rig.

Here's the site if you are curious: http://www.bikenames.com/onlinestore.htm

Cube- Speaking of that, are you "The Cube" because cubed in math is 3 and triathlon is three disciplines? Or maybe there is an interesting tale of you traveling in a box from coast to coast on a freight train? Curious.

Thanks for the link Sam.

Also, had a question for all you long haulers on the bike. What is everyone using for nutrition on the bike? Are you using water, gatoraid, gels, salt caps or other nutrition or a combination of these. I haven't really had a great plan for nutrition and am looking to start nailing it before my bikes become too long. Right now I am using G2 at about 24 onces and hour and a gel every 45'ish. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
