Great job Joy!  You are really having a great year!!!

Finally, good news for me.  I took 1st place in my age group in the 5K I ran today. My time was not that great but it was good for my age group 50-59 years.  1st mile 9:26, 2nd mile 18:46, 5K 29:14,  There wasn't a 3 mile marker, and I'm happy with my splits considering there were 2 hills the last mile.  This was a small race and I was 34th out of 134 women.  I worked 10 hours last night and then drove to my sisters house, got there alittle after 1am.  I caught 4 hours sleep before it was time to get up for the race.  This race is for a local 19 yr old college student who was abducted and murdered by a recently released sex offender.  Her parents and small town put this 5K on to raise money to help support victims of sexual abuse and support legislation for stronger laws against sex offenders.  It is an opportunity for her family and friends to do something positive in the face of the tragedy.  It's very small town and I just love it.  You have elementary and preschoolers handing water at the water stops, the person who was supposed to bring the starting gun forgot it so the announcer used a bull horn sound from an app on his iphone. The medals for the age group winners were homemade purple ceramic medallions of a purple elephant (Dru's favorite color was purple and she had a stuffed elephant she loved and took to college with her).  They are beautiful and so personal.  Anyway, a good day all around.  Smile

Linda

Great job Linda!

I say prison it too nice of place for sex offenders...

Okay as the season comes to a close(well at least up here) a quick question for those who did multiple races. How do you think did over the course of the summer. I myself have done a sprint and an Oly with another Oly this weekend followed by at 1 sprint 2 weeks later so I will report back after these.

Anything you would do differently? Anything that worked great for you? Any transition tricks that you felt helped?

Cheers

I wouldn't book two races so close together as I did in June.

On any TRIs that involves overnight travel I wouldn't show up the day before the race. Both times I did I felt rushed and flustered. Next year if I travel I'll show up two days before.

Things that helped as the season went on: Quick laces, better nutrition and hydration, better hill training on the bike and just having more racing experience.

Things I will do to make next season better.

1. Get a heart rate monitor for the water. I have a really hard time measuring my level of exertion until I get vertical and by then it's too late. This is especially true on OWS swims.

2. Get a bike trainer so I can train all winter vs just doing spinning classes.

3. Train more often during the day to simulate hot conditions. Every time it got hot I started to blow up.

4. Do more interval training for both the bike and run.

5. Increase my volume as next year I'm doing mainly halfs just like this year was Olympics.

6. Work more on my swimming form with less emphasis on speed and cardio training.

I tweaked my shoulder water skiing on vacation so I'm on the shelf for a week for swimming and maybe the bike which blows. I did run 11 miles this morning and I'm hoping it loosens up so I can bike tomorrow but if not I'll do a shorter run.

Thanks Scott! I find I am very similar, of course I have only done the 2 so far with 2 more coming up quickly so we shall see how it goes!

I am looking forward to getting a bike trainer as my bike is weak in my opinion. I need to get more mileage in the seat! Also need to get more running in!

Well, I've done 6 sprints and I have seen improvements! My swimming has really improved. I definitely need to step it up and do an Oly. Mainly, I need to train consistently over the winter and ask Santa for a bike trainer.

Wow, 6, great job! Anymore for this year?

Maybe we can get a group deal on cycle trainers! Smile

I am getting one, Scott(everlong) is getting one.

Be interesting to see how everyone's bike will be next year if we all get trainers!

One more sprint, a few running races and a 1 mile swim time trial.

Shoulder was finally good enough to ride with albeit heavily wrapped with an ace bandage. My training partner and I were crossing a set of train tracks that we've crossed at least a dozen times before. They are deep tracks with warnings for bikes and they cut across the road at an angle. I cut right and then back left so my tired hit the tracks perpendicularly as I always do and I executed it perfectly. For whatever reason my partner did not and it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I saw hit tire go in and I couldn't get the words out quick enough. It jammed and he went right over the handle bars contacting the ground face first and then his shoulder hit next. My first thought was oh my god he just broke his neck. By the time I turned around he was already up but bleeding out of his nose and mouth. I was happy to see him up and figured he was going to be spitting out teeth but somehow he dodged the bullet and was fairly cut up but no long term damage. He had scrapes on his nose but I think his goatee bailed him out on other facial cuts. Hit knuckles and knees were cut up fairly well. Garmin was really scratched up but functional. His helmet didn't have a blemish as his face took the impact. We were going 18 MPH when he hit according to my Garmin so it could have been much worse on so many levels.

Be careful on the tracks.

Ouchie indeed!  >.<

Note to self as well... cross railroad tracks in perpendicular fashion even if it means slowing down to 10mph...  O_O

For some reason, it seems like instinct always takes over and you try to save your equipment instead of yourself.  Glad he was ok, and I will NOT try to grow a goatee. (ha,ha).

My husband and I leave for Seattle tomorrow....yipee.  I am so burned out.  Drove to Madison, moved son in to apartment, drove back....all in 1 day.  10 hours on the road and pouring rain at the end.  My son packed his boxes for his strength (heavy) not mine, so I am sore.  I need a vacation so off I go.

I am hoping to get some running and biking in now that I have all the kids out of the house. Seattle is supposed to be a great biking town.  It would be great if there was a race this weekend, but I do have to account for my vacation partner, so we will see.

I think in most cases you're right that we try to save our gear but he really didn't have a choice. The time from when his tire got caught in the tracks to when his face hit the pavement was a half second at best.

Swam 2050 yards last night at the pool and focused a lot on delaying my catch and pull during recovery strokes.  To my surprise, I consistently decreased my SPL by 2 all the while keeping myself balanced and circle swimming with 2 other swimmers!  It's so amazing how much that minimized the drag. ^_^
