I went to the college today and FINALLY got myself an adviser; and great news, I DON'T have to take statistics (again). I turned in the required classes list for graduation, and my appeal as well. Now I just have to wait to see if its approved. In the meantime, I will need to petition for graduation, and figure out which upper division gen ed class to take in lieu of stats---SO, fellow manatees, which of these classes do I want to take?

  • History 146--the Cultural History of Japan
  • Humanities 151--World Mythology
  • History 123--The Crusades

All three interest me, and are at the right time, so I will just need to make a choice....what do you all think? Smile

I vote for cultural history of Japan.  Asian culture is so foreign to me and I don't really understand it, and I think a historical overview would be a great way to become a more enlightened world citizen BUt perhaps you are already enlightened Cool

Sorry I have been an infrequent poster as of late, trying to avoid BT while working because I want to impress on my 3 week fill in to get a good reccomendation but I have been working out mostly, missed yesterday due to a charity event at a brewery for the local shelter how do you say no to that?  Got a good ride in today and am posting it soon hope for a swim tomorrow.

LOL, I tried for a week or two but it was kiling me to miss out on everything. I'm back to my manatee addiction, and I don't think there is such thing as manatee rehab.

ebshot - 2012-07-19 7:35 PM Okay, I am back from a ride with my son Cole.  He was great on the bike path.  It was the first time we had been to the path and he's never really ridden before.  We went 4 miles before he wanted to turn around.  Very cool.  Then on the way back he (not surprisingly) became tired.  And stopped dead in the middle of the path.  Yeah...I was riding my roadie (my mtn bike has a broken derailleur hanger) clipped in and didn't have time to unclip and stop.  Boom, my bars clipped his and down I went.  Kersplat!  My bike is fine and I'm overall good to go too.  Scraped up and bruised but no big deal.  Just another reminder why we ALWAYS need to wear a helmet.

Anyway, we finished the ride and Cole rocked out 8 miles.  I am so proud!  We'll go back for sure.

Totally! It drives me nuts when I see parents out riding with their kids, and the kids have helmets but the parents don't. What kind of message does that send? Adults brains don't need protecting?

Also, glad you are ok! And that sounds like a great outing with your little one!

This weekend will be another trip to Orlando. Both of my daughters live there. The youngest was planning a wedding, but that has fallen apart. But it seems to have opened a few other doors that she wouldn't have knocked on in the past, so silver lining and all. And she is figuring out how strong she really is.

Thank you everyone. Tonight has been especially hard, so we are just having another crappy go of it. This too will pass, but not soon enough.

Thanks again

Oh my gosh, I'm glad you are both ok!  Absolutely on the helmet--the few times I have forgotten, I've felt naked.  I'm amazed at how many people I see out there without.

Keep in mind too, that as your train it gets easier. As it gets easier your definition of slow changes...

Yes, but relative to you.  You still end up running faster on race day, whatever your 'slow' is...

I don't have a lot to add, but you can look at my logs. Most of my training runs are ridiculously slow, like 11 mins per mile slow, sometimes slower, sometimes a little faster. But my last sprint run was 9:30ish minutes per mile. Still slow by most standards, but considerably faster than training runs. I don't do regular speed work -- just one session a couple weeks ago in the past year -- because I need more base and don't want to be injured. My speed goals are very modest -- I am hoping to post a 24 min 5k before I get too old to run "fast" anymore.

They all sound awesome. The Crusades class could be really interesting as long as it's not one sided -- the presentation needs to be balanced. fair to all sides. That's hard for some to do, especially in our Post 9/11 climate.

Strava sounds fun. My only technology, however, is the Ironman watch (Smile) and sometimes my Ipod. I don't think my headlamp counts, but it is kind of technological, in a way.

But I like the idea of competing with others, virtually. I have a pretty strong competitive streak, as it turns out. I always knew I did professionally, but I didn't know about it athletically.

Au contraire. You'd have to go to Florida, though.

Manatee Rehab at Lowry Park Zoo

Jeebs. That sounds like my life.

Gosh, but there are some really cute pictures in that link! (Did you know it costs $30,000/yr to feed an adult Manatee? Yep, that sounds about right to me ... ha ha ha)

See if you can e-mail or better yet call (or if you're on campus, best yet meet) the professors and ask some intelligent questions about the class content, syllabus, literature, etc. It will become quickly apparent who has the most passion for the subject and for teaching. Take the class with the one whom you wish you could politely hang up on because s/he keeps blathering on

I've taken a class from the one who teaches the Crusades class--its her specialty/passion--she is actually a REALLY good professor, her class on ancient civilizations was fascinating. As for the other two, they have it listed as "staff" teaching it, i.e. they don't have the professor nailed down yet. Mythology is an interest I have (I am crazy for reading myth-y stuff!), and I also have always been interested in Japanese culture (one of my classes last semester was an anthro based class on Japanese culture), so I am familiar with it too (I even have a Japanese breed of dog!)

Mika, my Shiba Inu

hm....I can't sign up for classes at the moment, so I have to wait til late August to try to get in the class... I have time to decide--so far, between here and Facebook, I have more votes for mythology. oooooh, decisions, decisions! At least it keeps my mind off of worrying about the appeal! Funny bit there: According to my adviser, mine was the first SAP appeal she'd seen--yet there are TONS of others who have one---this is the first year that the school is having to enforce the unit over limit rule! Mainly at the behest of the feds....well, hopefully, my needing ony 7 more classes will work in my favor!

Sooo ... I'm back from my first swim session with the blond German piglet. It was really just to feel each other out, see where he's at with his swimming, get a workout in, including some breaststroke, some backstroke ... but I digress.

So of course I nearly made him puke ... from the SWIMMING! the SWIMMING!

I mighta been a bit direct with my first words to him: "Dude. What is all that sh&%+?! You're scaring me. Throw that away." He was doing his warmup with a snorkel and fins ... and just planing flat as a board across the water.

We did have a really nice breakfast after.

I think I'm going to post his stats and videos as progress here. He's an interesting case ... we need to get him from where he is right now to (triathlon swimming) world-class times in ... 9 months. He qualified for 70.3 Worlds on a laughable swim (for that level) and smokin' bike and run times and got very lucky with a roll-down that went 20 places deep. That's not going to happen when he tries to qualify for Kona ... to be certain of a spot, he's going to have train to win his age group (thus likely putting him in the top 3).

I've heard of the manatee rehab at Lowry Park--our lead vet tech at the zoo is INSANE for manatees (I have not mentioned this mentor group to her--it would be awkward) and she plans on going there at some point to help out; there's a few other groups in Florida, as well as a country in South America (I heard it in passing this morning, but have since forgotten..sorry) who also do rehab and always need volunteers.

Oh, almost forgot! I get to be on TV! Cool I guess a local station regularly does a little segment on animal stuff on Mondays. They got in touch with us, and after lots of chatting, they decided that exotic animal training was of interest. They are enamored with the idea of my training our White's Tree Frogs (the ones that try to eat my hands on a regular basis), so they are going to film me 'training' them, and also interview me as well. This is all happening on Monday--so afterwords, I will post a link once they release it. I'm going to have to SERIOUSLY CLEAN that exhibit, it has seen better days...oh well, task for the weekend! Undecided

kgore - 2012-07-19 9:01 PM Oh, almost forgot! Undecided

Cool another celebrity manatee!

I would really like to see the progress--it will help me, and also inspire me....btw. way to go, you nearly make someone puke from the workout and then you take them to breakfast?!?! That is just mean....at least is was nice. What did y'all have?

It'll definitely inspire you ... I mean the swimming, but also, he's really hot. And technically, he took me to breakfast. Hee hee ... he had the American Breakfast (fresh-baked bread with butter and jam, bacon and eggs, drip coffee, small serve of mixed fruit). I had the Greek Salad with Roast Beef, cappuccino, big serve of mixed fruit, which I was kind enough to let him snork half of. After all, he was off to do hill repeats on his Cervelo afterward. (puuuuuke)

And yes ... Mika is lovely and has that cheeky twinkle (or is it a catlike "I care not") typical of the breed. I do think it's hilarious when dogs do froglegs.
