wgraves7582 - 2009-11-14 2:31 PM Howdy Ghoulies - just a quick stop by for now.  Did the cross race today and it hurt - but it was fun and it was a good hurt - not the ITB hurt that I have been avoiding.

Will put a race report together at some point.

Trying my first run tomorrow morning - Prayers that it is painless!

glad the race was fun and did not bother the ITB.  Good luck tomorrow with the run

Dangit, when I did that last reply, I had all sorts of editing options, and now they're gone. Sometimes I miss internet explorer. I haven't had all the smileys and font options much since I went to a mac.

aspeelma - 2009-11-14 11:48 AM Good morning Ghoulies!!!

First ever 5k today. My goal was sub 30, my time was 31:05. I'm a little disappointed but not a whole lot. Running on a cross country course is not something I've done before. It was wet grass and a lot of mud, not to mention not very even. There were parts where everyone was zigzagging around large mud pits. So these slowed me down some. My first mile was great for me, 8:19, it went down hill from there. I also have orthotics in my shoes, with all the wet and uneven my feet were slopping around in my shoes a lot. I used Body Glide before hand, but I've got 5 new blisters on my feet. The blisters on my arches were killing me the last mile. I kicked off my shoes where my DH and DD were standing, about 1K from the finish. I ran sooooo much better without my feet killing me. My DS was waiting for me at the finish line. Maybe I should have kicked my shoes off sooner because I was definitely when my feet stopped hurting so much with every step.

While I missed my goal, I learned a lot, and I know the next time will be better.

Have a great day Ghoulies!!!

Great job Ann!  Just terrific.  BandAid makes a great product for blisters.  Sadly, I have used them on many occasions.  One other thought, try smart wool socks.  I've found they are less likeley to cause blisters, even when wet.

Thanks Kim. I'll be out tonight so I'll be on the lookout for smart wool. I have to find something that works, I constantly have blisters and it gets quite frustrating. I know the ones on the bottoms of my feet are caused by the orthotics but I can't run without them. The grass was wet and soft so it actually felt good on my sore feet after I kicked off my shoes.

I use orthotics also, but I haven't had any issues with blisters.  Of course, I don't go very fast either.  Hope the blisters heal up quickly.  Let us know if you find a solution!

I have orthodics too and don't have issues with blisters.  Wonder if your orthodics are fitting your shoes correctly.
X2. I would be inclined to go back to that PT and discuss what you REALLY need. There's gotta be a better way.

iowagander - 2009-11-14 5:26 PMToday's workout went from "hey, this is going great!" to "crap, another one of these days..."

The 3 mile pace run went really well, clocking in at well below my goal race-pace. One good thing was a new little mind-trick I tried on the hills, keeping my eyes glued to the ground about 30 feet or so in front of me. Maybe it was just a mind trick, but it seemed to help me keep my pace steady through the hills. Then came the fun...

On the last stretch coming home, I realized that I need to plan my meals a little better. I.e. no cereal with milk before running. Yuck... Then during my cooldown walk my iPod started skipping even though there's plenty of battery left. I'm hoping it was just the heat but I've got my eye on it.

Then I came inside for my ST session. It was going really good and I even got my daughter to do some push ups with me, but when she went for a potty break the toilet overflowed causing me to switch from leg lifts to towel-mopping and plunging. Grr...

I have a 6 mile LSR on the schedule tomorrow, so I'm determined to have a better day with that. There's a nice 6 mile loop here with some good street-side trails, hill-top views, and only a few crappy intersections.

I hope everyone's having a nice weekend so far!
Sorry your day didn't go so well. Just remember to remind yourself when you wake up in the morning, that it is a fresh new day with no mistakes in it.

OK, one more post then I really really will go to bed. I promise. Curry Sweet Potatoes2 medium sweet potatoes/yams, peeled and cubed¾ cup olive oil1 tsp curry1 tsp garlic powder½ tsp chili powder½ tsp saltmix olive oil and dry ingredients in gallon ziplock, mush together to mix. Add potatoes, mix well, coating all sides of all potatoes.Bake on cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 30 minutes or until tender.I usually cut the potatoes into about 1 inch cubes. Super easy, and yummy. I've done both yams and sweet potatoes. Yummy. Yummy. Yummy.

MORNING Ghoulies!

All the yard work yesterday kicked butt. My arms are gonna kill me. I raked a bunch and then did some general weeding and recovery in the yard. The 4 "kids" moved about a ton of rocks (literally- not an exaggeration), moved downed limbs and a bunch of general clean up. It is amazing what kind of work you can get with a bribe of dinner and beer.

I made a really easy- great scallop scampi. It is just butter, white wine, garlic (I used some that I had previously roasted and put in the freezer), parsley and salt and pepper. Melt all that stuff together. taste make sure it isn't too oily (buttery) or sweet/acidy (wine) and adjust. The put in the scallops (most people use shrimp, good too but I like scallops better) and cook until they are opaque. Eat over rice. A really nice salad with a pomegranate vinaigrette. (pomegranates are in season so I use them as much as possible) and dinner was done.

deehtz - 2009-11-14 4:27 PM Just stopped in quick to give a cheer after my jog and before I go rake leaves.

I  accomplished my current goal today...sooner than I expected!  I jogged 3.5 miles with an average pace of 12:40 per mile!!  For me that is amazing!   I wanted to be able to maintain no more than 13 min miles.

I have my first 5k in just under two weeks, so I am not going to push for another goal... just try to solidify this pace...  Whee hee!!

Way to Go Dee!

thanks for asking ROBIN....

i think theres a few things that make it my fav.

first, i love spinning in general.  i like the feel of the bike and the kick-butt workout i always seem to get when im riding.

second, and probably more importantly, i really, really enjoy the instructor.  she's a friend and an triathlete NOW ironwoman, so she takes a 'road ride' approach to the class.

so instead of the typical, 'jumps' and fast intervals that would be typical of a fitness/aerobic spin class, her class has lots of long seated/standing climbs, fast flats, false flats et al.  so it has more of a road ride feel to it.

then, the time of day (5:45-7:45 am) works for me.  most time im home before my DH and the boys are even up...and then i have 2 hrs of a workout in already.  yes!

its cool too, since its not one of the most 'popular' class offerred at the Y (because of the time and intensity) theres a core group that comes week to week, and we've gotten to know one another, and theres quite a bit of banter that goes on week to week, which makes it feel like an outdoor group ride W/OUT the out of doors/weather to contend with.

w the ENDURANCE focus of the class, it really set an endurance base that lasted throughout the length of my tri season.

its a really unique class in that respect.

welpers GHOULIES.

im heading to the Y a little bit later.

gonna make a pot of SPAG sauce as soon as DH gets back from the grocery store, the kids requested spaghetti and meatballs.  sounds good to me.

i was gonna do a speedwork run, but i realized after this week i needed to tweak my schedule just a bit so it work 'better'...

after my 2 hr endurance im in 'no mood' to do speedwork...so in order to get the most out of THAT run, i rearranged some things so that my sw comes later in the week when im more 'up to the task'

i knew when i put my winter maintenance schedule it would take some 'tweaking' for it to work well....somethings look good on paper, but then in actual practice...well.  you all know how that is.

i think the changes will make things work better and thats always a good feeling.

im really DIGGIN' this winter maintenance, which is actually taking me by surprise.

w/out as much as a glimmer of an event on the horizon, i thought i would feel some 'inertia' but i think ive done some things to help in that regard.

i have a 2 mile continuous swim goal set to reach by the first of the year.

having a new ST program, even though i DISDAIN it, is motivating cuz its something 'new'....

and above everything else, the fact that i have a BASE TO MAINTAIN, is uber duber exciting.  the thought of heading into this years Tri season w a SOLID BASE is just really motivating to me right now.

its all good.
