Whoa swam this morning 3500m and burnt 980 cals. Holly molly I have to start eating as soon as I get on the bike to get some of the clas back.

So I am going to carry 9 gels (4 with caffine and 5 non caffinated) and some sports beans and Gu chomps and a honey stinger waffel broken up  for the first 56 miles  and then have the same stuff in my special needs bag for the other half. I am not big eater on the bike. How many eat like solid solid foods on the bike.

I eat solids on the bike.  I have an iron stomach.  I could eat a tuna sandwich on the bike and be fine.  I use accelerade (I like it) and usually candy.  You need carbs.  It doesn't need to be labeled as sports food.  I cut twizzlers in 1/2.  They fit nicely in a bento box and don't melt and taste a hell of a lot better than a gel.  I have used mini pay day bars too.  Have used fig newtons, mini air heads and laffy taffy.  I'll probably bring a gel or too as well and the rest live off the course.

on the bike-  i'm using vespa, lava salts, good ole fashioned assorted flavor chewy sour balls and will drink off the course

on the run- i will use vespa and live off the course for the rest

I use the course gels and IM Perform, but mix in P-nut butter pretzels on the ride.  I can't get away with NOT eating solids.  My body yearns for REAL food about 60 miles into the bike so I'll pack a PB&J in special needs.

Getting anxious!

Anyone have a suggestion on salt tabs?  Should use?  What kind?  ect.?

Currently use Hammer Endurolytes.  Should I also be taking salt tabs for the IM?

Thanks for the advice!

If you're using Endurolytes and your electrolyte drink, you should be fine.

I need to replace my chain. Do you guys think it's too close to the race? I had it changed last year about a month out. I still have 6-7 rides mostly short with 1-2 hour ride ahead if that helps.

thx

If you're swapping the chain, I would replace the cassette as well so they "break in" together.

When I took my bike in the other day they told me they couldn't swap my chain because the cassette was worn.  They just wouldn't fit together as the cassette was worn.  Told me to just keep riding until I had an issue then swap them both out.

Duane

It depends how often you change chains and cassettes. I change chains every 2500 miles or so. I have multiple wheels, and cassettes. My goal is always to change the chain before it effects cassettes.

I plan to change my chain this next week. I replaced it last month so I'll keep that one and use it more, but like a new chain for Ironman.

Yep Kathy if you plan on walking the marathon, then you could gun the bike, taking it easy for the starting 50 then picking it up to the end. Have you done any hard 50's with strong walk to follow ?

I haven't really. I do my long rides with increasing watts every hour. I've done some zone 3 3 hour rides that tend to shell me more than long rides or FTP intervals.

2008 IMLP my TSS was 447 and my IF .755 with a vi of 1.17- what does that say...wrong gearing anyone? Ding ding ding you are right; any wonder I walked 20 miles?

IM relay I did month after LP, TSS was about same as LP, vi was 1.17 on much flatter course but didn't know about low vi or race execution with power

I had done series of TT that summer and had tested my FTP about 2 weeks before LP so that was correct.

What is your plan for the bike? Goal % of FTP? TSS?

Well my running is also stuffed after 3 operations in May, a hernia and 2 emergency embolectomies (sp) to remove clots, so my run training has been non existent, a half marathon last week 20 mins slower than usual. So without a coach I'm undecided on whether to push the the bike harder than my normal 70% FTP or to ride conservatively and see if I can run/walk the marathon. Probably wont decide until I'm on the bike Wink. But I'm going to try my best to enjoy it, and would like to ride sub 5:30 and see how I feel.

Not sure if my wife will be traveling with me to IMFL.  We are undecided.....our family is willing to watch our kids but is it worth it? They will be a wreck when we get back and honestly don't know if my wife and I would have a lot of time alone together.  Between the registering, bike check in, race, traveling, etc leaves very little time.  I am planning on coming Thursday and leaving Sunday (either if she comes or not).  I feel like we should save our "alone" vacation when we can not have a Ironman to do.   Thoughts?

I was also thinking of bringing my iphone to the transitions and I can bring up skype and talk to my family with video after the race.

Also, what is everyone doing after the race? Do most people go out afterwards?

Tough call, I told my wife she could stay home but she will be there. Long day during IM, she will watch the swim and see me go out on the bike then head back to our room, then come back on the bike in and run out. I plan to have my phone in the T1 bag so I can let her know when I am getting close.

Not sure about what to expect afterwards, most places are closed to begin with, off season in PCB. Would be nice to think I'll be able to hang out and have a beverage or two.

Wife is coming but we have no small kids so no babysitter problems.  Heck, how often do you get to stay in a gulf front condo for 4 nights?  She will enjoy the trip.  I might not even see her during the race and that is OK.  Her only job (she agrees to it) is to get my bike and transitions bags and take them back to the room   Other than that, I'll see her at the finish.

Shower and sleep - that is my celebration afterward.  I will want to hang for a bit but one I get to the room and shower I think it is going to be all over

Finally went out today and put in 47 miles so I don't feel too bad.  Just about 30 min less than was on the schedule so I'm fine with it.

Duane, sounds like my wife and your wife will be on the same PCB plan.

Looking at your sig line,

I have a feeling you'll be fine on race day!!

Then went out with hubby yesterday and did a shorter ride after my swim and I thought my legs were replaced with lead limbs. So glad the taper starts tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting everyone on the swim Thursday and Fri.

My wife has been to 4 of my 5 marathons and a few tris.  She takes a book.  she also brings cheer to the whole experience as when I completed the Boston Marathon, she was at the end with a bottle of champaign and a Backwoods brand cigar for me.. Then we hit the Union Oyster bar and have a few Killian Reds and steamed clams.  Ya gotta take your wife!!!

Usually people dont' really go out.  You will be wiped out and want a shower and food.

Thank about if you realy want to do this alone and not share it with your wife.  This si not abotu alone time withyour wife its about you donig your first ironman which is  HUGE accomplishment., I woudl want someone to share it with. I am sure she has seen yout hru a lot this year.  Just someting to think about
