Made it to Seattle (flew) just fine  The hotel has a workout room which I haven't visited yet because it is beautiful here, plus a pool that is 9 ft deep.  We went to downtown Seattle to see the sights today and ended up in the middle of the HEMP FESTIVAL.  I kid you not.  There were thousands of people, speakers, etc.  working to legalize marijuana in Washington.  Ha, I grew up in the 60's and 70's.  These youngsters are innocent babies.  Anyway, moved along to a different tourist attraction.

Anyone racing this weekend?

Linda

One of the things I'm getting better and better at as my leg strength and fitness level improves is keeping my heart rate down on the big hills on the bike. My max heart rate today was 158 and that was on a short but steep hill where I made the decision to power through the hill. There were some longer hills that were just as steep that I maxed at 156. I was really struggling with this earlier in the summer because at some point you'll fall over if you're going too slow so the only choice is to raise the heart rate. It makes such a difference on the longer rides.

Another Oly is in the books!

3:05:34

34/71

Prerace: Lousy sleep(as per usual)

Got up around 5:45am, had brekkie then went with my son to pick up race package, set up transition and get body marking done.

Had a chance to get the best transition spot(in my opinion) but opted for second best...the same spot my son had is bike for his first triathlon! A warm sunny day for the race!

Swim:2 laps in a alkali lake. Visibility was great where the water was 12" or shallower!

Great start but again a mix of lack of OWS training and sighting combo slowed up my first lap. Felt much better second lap. Overall better then my first OWS race!

A lonnnng run up freshly tilled sand to the transition area. A decent transition except trouble getting wetsuit over race chip on ankle. Duh, took me awhile to realize what the problem was.

Another long run to get to bike course, then an uphill mount, nearly got wiped out on that!

Bike was rolling hills, nothing too bad. Felt pretty good on bike actually. Race my race and didn't let people passing me change anything. A bunch passed me in the first 10-15(of 43) kilometers. Probably passed 25% them back before the end of the bike. Pace and cadence baby!

Had a great bike to run transition or so my wife and son say!

Run...well it was a brutal hilly trail run. 2 killer laps! Only 23 people broke 1 hour. While my time and pace were slower then my last race, I didn't have the quads cramping problem so that was good.

Overall I was slightly disappointed with my time. Looking forward to my final race Sept. 5, a sprint!

You did it man!  That's great!  It looks like you had the same timing chip problem I had while taking off the wetsuit hehehe!

Did you wanna beat the 3 hour mark?  I wonder if that's a realistic goal for my first oly...

Apparently I should read over all older posts...I am thinking to myself, what the hell is going on...now, looking back, I noticed some people put their timing chip underneath their wetsuit... aah...

My last Oly was 2:53 on a hilly course...the bike was 2 miles shorter on that one though.

My run was waaay slower on yesterday's as it was a hilly trail run in the heat...

I have to stop comparing triathlons as they are all different. The key for me is to redo some next year to gauge my improvement.

The highlight for me was watching my 8yr old son compete in his first triathlon!

I'll try that under the wetsuit strategy!  Nice achievement on your son's first tri!  Yay! ^_^

Major kudos to your son.

They really are so different.

My first (all Olympics) one had the longer distances, a super hilly bike and run and a super long and slick transition up a hill in the rain. However it was cold and the water had minimal chop.

Second one the middle of the bike course had some huge hills that I wasn't ready for and the run came out on the run and punished me for taking the heart rate too high on the bike. However the water was peaceful and the run flat.

The third featured 2 foot waves, a half mile run between the swim exit and T1, a very slick bike path to contend with for the first half mile and last quarter mile of the bike, a very hilly run and insane humidity and heat.

All things considered the third was my best race. My fitness improved by the time each race rolled around and that's all that matters. Every race will have its complications and overcoming them is part of the challenge.

They didn't do transition times for this one.

Swim was 1 mile in 27:08.
Bike was 27 miles in 1:34.
Run was 6.2 miles in 1:04.

Very similar to my first Olympic. That one was 1 mile, 26 and 6.5. My times were 35:15, 1:28:35 and 59:06. The 35:15 included a half mile trek up a slippery rain soaked trail. I estimate my time to get up the hill and transition to be 7-8 minutes which puts our times very close together. Your bike was slightly longer so again very close and both the bike and run were super hilly like you described.

I know what you mean because I described NY, my most recent not the one I describe above, as being mildly disappointing when I first got done. In retrospect being my first full season doing TRIs and Olympics I think it's a solid effort. I think in a week you'll view it the same way. We set our goals pretty high which is the way it should be but we also need perspective.

Again great job.

Absolutely I agree! I don't want to be "that guy/girl" who is just competing to finish. I go into every race wanting to win(something!). I am okay with being at the 50th percentile this year, but next year I want to move up to the 25 percentile which I know is a big jump but...Gotta shoot for the stars!

My swim can improve a bit but my bike and run, I feel can make big improvements on. I plan on spending alot of time on the bike trainer and treadmill this winter.

Plus I am going to join the masters swim club in January if time permits.

So, my knee is better. I made it through that tri on the 13th and then took a week off from biking and running. It is completely pain free and I was able to do a 4 mile run this morning. I plan to do a 10K on Saturday for my "long run" for the week. I'm excited about it! I was wondering what a week off would do for me, but I was still able to run at my normal pace.  I do know one thing, I was grouchy and depressed last week and I need to apologize to my family! LOL

Have you tracked it just this season? I bet you've improved.

85/124 31.5% Ashland 6/12
249/378 34.2% Stamford 6/26
1358/3141 56.2% NYC 8/7

I really turned up my bike volume in July after the June results and it payed off. I can see it in my training even more than the race results. Suddenly the same rides where I'd be say an average speed of 18.2 MPH and an average HR of 146 and a max HR of 165 now I'm going 18.5 MPH and an average HR of only 138 and a max HR or 158. It translated on my runs too. I'm about 10-15 seconds per mile faster with the same average heart rate and a lower max heart rate.

Considering I took 4 months off from March to July in 2010 and just did the one sprint last September I'm looking back on this year differently now that I have some perspective. After each race I wanted better and I suspect it will always be like this.

Does anybody know of a site that tracks did not finish stats for races? Ashland I know there were 4 but I've never been able to find the numbers for Stamford or NYC. I know for a fact there were at least 30 in NYC and I have a feeling it was more than that. Stamford I wouldn't doubt that there were only a handful at best.

Have not tracked as all I have done is 1 sprint and 2 Olympics with another Sprint to end the season Sept. 5. I was going to do another on the 11th but my son has hockey tryouts, which is probably a good thing. Next year I am going to do the sprint and the oly  that I started out with this year as a bit of a guage on my improvemnet. Hopefully they don't change the course or anything silly like that!

Definitely the bike will be my biggest area of improvement for the winter. The run will be better as a result of that and a better running program. I guess I should listen to  my wife...she is a group fitness coordinator at our local gym and one of the course she teaches is running...hmmm maybe I should knows more then me...Smile

I had an awesome brick this morning. First brick since the NYC TRI. Leading up to the TRI I was doing lots of bricks. Funny how weird it felt starting to run after just a 17 day layoff from bricks. It only took a quarter of a mile to get my sea legs under me but wow did I feel off especially that first tenth of a mile.

I'm going to seriously hate having to take my workouts back indoors. I left my house this morning at 5:42AM and sunrise wasn't until 6AM. Civil twilight is a half hour before sunrise so I had light but some of the back roads near my house are heavily wooded. It was a little bit unnerving when I heard cars coming for the first twenty minutes. With work I really can't push my start times back too much more. Scary that I was starting a full hour earlier not that long ago.

I know what you mean... I went for a 24 mile bike ride yesterday after work (which ended up being 26) and thought I'd be home with ample enough sunlight to do a 1 mile run but it got dark on me...  Looks like I'm gonna be shopping around for a bike trainer soon when daylight savings happens.  That or move my workouts to the morning.  =)

Ahh, it was a great start to the day! At the pool at 5:30am this morning...the only person for the first 15 minutes! Love it! Including me, 4 people in the pool for the first hour! Hmm, maybe I should have wore a swim suit...Surprised

There's always 25-36 people in masters swim so I'm used to the crowd and where it's organized and synchronized it's better than the free reign of open swim.

Still rehabbing the back of my left shoulder from water skiing. It's about 95% but I'm being very cautious. I've downgraded by two lanes so I can keep a controlled pace and also avoid arm contact at all costs. I did 2000 yards Tuesday and 2200 today. Tue was all un-timed 50's. Today I did a bunch of timed 50's and 100's and at the end I did one 200 in 3:22 so it's getting there. It takes about a thousand yards to get loose where normally I'm there in 200.
