Just a check in... during my ride tonight I felt pretty good.  I really went slow and I kept having to hold myself back when my heart rate monitor alarm went off when I broke 130 BPM.  I was hearted by the fact that I was able to ride at a 18 mph pace with only an increase of about 20 BPM.

Kevin - thanks for the advice.  I agree with everything you said... especially about the bike.  Makes no sense to ride at a 20 mph pace if it takes me 90 minutes to finish the run...

BTW - You can totally make your weight goal.  With all the miles you'll be logging for the HIM - it should be attainable.  In all honesty - I really don't want to drink beer bought by you or Thor or Darren for that matter... But I will if I have toWink

If I can't lose the 3lbs in 4 weeks you will drink for free, not for long but for a bit!

Well with my Oly coming up next weekend, I will tell you my plan....balls to the walls, I am going all out! The great thing with me is my run sucks so bad, I can't make it any worse with my bike! Smile As the swim is my strength, I need to get out front so I can be passed by half the field in the bike...makes my run look better, not many people left to pass me!

Have a great race!

Hi All -

OK - I am a week away from my OLY and I think I'm in decent shape.  I over-trained a bit but really tried to hold back this weekend with a 35 mile ride/run on Saturday and a 4 mile run today.  I want to shoot for a sub 3 and 1/2 hour time... but I think I could finish pretty close to 3:10 if I have a killer bike and a decent run.

Kevin - So we are training for a HIM next year... Awesome.  I plan on following your lead this winter... However, I can't do a HIM this year - it conflicts with my other goals for the Fall which is to ride a more difficult century in October and than run a HM in November.... Once that's done... I will starting tuning up for a HIM and I am still thinking about doing it solo up here at the lake in July and then doing it again at a Rev 3 event in Ohio in September 2013.

Favor it ask - would you please go to my training log and take a look at my plan for the next 6 weeks.  I've got it planned out day by day and I'd love to get your thoughts.  My plan is based on the following 3 premises: 1) I need to build biking volume so I'm gonna cut out most of the running and use the swimming as a way to recover.  2) I trust DH so I violated the 10% rule.  My question for you DH - am I doing too much? 3) Every hard run is followed by a recovery ride... Are these effective in terms of adding milage while recovering after a hard ride or would sitting on my be more effective?

Good luck everyone.  Weigh in day is on Wednesday!

Hey sorry for waiting so long to chime in on this. I have tried to write a reply a number of times and each time I end up with, "you are trying to do to much." Which is both what I think and not what I think.

Firstly, I think just about anyone could ride a century, provided they have enough lube. I don't say that to belittle your goal but to point out that you don't HAVE to do a progression of 70 80 90 miles. Except for one week, your past bike mileage has been far less than what you are planning on doing in the next 6 weeks.

I think that what you do on your long ride day will help you less with the century than what you do the other 6 days. My concern is that your long ride day will prevent you from working out during the week (except for swimming).

So a couple options.

1. I am wrong.....so in that case go as planned, if you get through the first 2 weeks then fine
2. I am right...after the first week you are crippled.....I suppose we can re-evaluate then (see comment about anyone being able to ride a century)
3. Tone down the long ride and put in more time during the week. I mean you can still go out and ride 4 or 5 hours on the weekend.

I know you want to do the build up so that you have the confidence. I think at the end of the day 100 miles is going to hurt....so is 90 miles. The only confidence you gain is that you can deal with the pain of sitting in an uncomfortable position for hours. 3 long rides before that are not going to make it that much easier and may sacrifice other gains you can make by solid training during the week.

Perhaps another option is just change that 70 miler to a 50 miler. If that goes well for the next week then throw in a 70 miler, then throw in a 90 miler if you must. I vote for this option.

Regarding the running. Take it easy. Running on tired legs, which your legs will be, is dangerous and leads to injury. You must go slow. If you must go fast you MUST be mindful of your form. I wouldn't do any hard running. (I just did my first hard interval workout since May only yesterday, but I am crazy conservative).

For that matter, be mindful of your form on the bike. The bike is more forgiving but on the kind of volume you are adding, which is totally fine, you get beat down and get lazy.

The swimming is the best of the sore muscles, get in as much of that to help them recover.

So to sum up, the century is totally appropriate and achievable. The goal is to achieve the most fitness gains for the century in the next 6 weeks. Riding long, while giving event appropriate fitness gains, may not give the same gains you can achieve through harder efforts during the week.

Darren: Is your wife American?  Bringing home two cases on July 3 sounds like she is really to celebrate July 4th in style!  Enjoy a few cold ones!  With those outlandishly long bikes and runs, you've earned them.

I myself will be celebrating America's birthday with 24 oz can of Bud in a red, white, and blue can.  It''s funny since Stella and Bud are owned by a European Country... How American is that for you!  However, with the temps in the low 90's - I could care less!

I weighed in this morning to discover my first gain since November.  Not trilled to have gained 1/2 a pound last week but not gonna beat myself up for it either.  The fact that I'm on vacation and tapering is part of it... and I'll eat better this week to try to make up for it.  With all the riding I've got planned in the next 6 weeks, I should have no problem dropping 4 pounds to put myself in position to drink some good FREE BEER.

Had Thomas Jefferson been alive in 2012, the declaration might have gone something like this:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that not all beers are created equal, that Beer Drinkers are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Good Beer.--That to secure tasty icy cold beverages, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of lovers of good beer, --That whenever any crappy beer is produced, it is the Right of beer drinkers to dump it down the toilet or ship it off to Canada and the world, and to brew quality beverages laying their foundation on such principles as good hops, barley, and yeast so as to ensure Safety and Happiness as each quality brew is quaffed...

Ha, love it.

No she isn't Americain. The liquor store here has a 10% off on the first tuesday of each month, add to that the sale price and you can get a good deal. The best part of the Stella was that it came with a mini stella goblet. Mmmmmm. Nice after mowing the lawn yesterday.

Well spur of the moment, decided to haul the trailer out last night and camp at miquelon Lake(location of Oly in August and usually no power boats). Instead of taking 2 vehicles, I brought out my bike and rode in this morning. Up at 4:10am and on the road. A little chilly as it was 8C(47F) with a wind out of the west....the direction I was heading...crap! First time riding in the moonlight. Found a lack of breakfast created a lack of energy for the last 10 miles(32mile ride).

On the other hand it sure felt great when I got home and grabbed a coffee and a shower!

My son and I will do some open water swimming tonight and maybe a run. Will repeat bike tomorrow with maybe a cliff bar for brekkie. Luckily I don`t have to be at work so early so I will probably start at 4:45am tomorrow.

Plan for the rest of the weekend is more OWS, running, biking, sitting around the fire and maybe the odd cold beer thrown in for godd measure!

I tend to agree with Darren on this.

As I am not up to speed on biking, is this Century ride a race?

Either way you are a better man then me to do the ride. My a$$ could not take a 100 miles/6hrs or so on my bike! Smile

No, it is Sobey's. Although Superstore has some rocking deals the first week of the month.

No, everyone is in town today, so I will throw the bike in the back of the truck and head back out tonite. That way I can get in our OWS. Apparently spending the evening triathlon training with my son while my daughter and wife watch is frowned upon. Of course I don`t want to spend 3 hours and 40+/- minutes on a bike in a day....I am a bit of a sissy that way. Plus I need to account for campfire beer time!

Darren - You are a tough hombre and an even wiser man... I agree.  The thing that scares me most is not the distance.  I know I can tough out the distance.  What I want to work on is my ability to tackle the hills.

So - new plan:

Monday and Wednesday - Hills
Tuesday and Thursday - Recovery rides and swims
Saturday - Long ride will be determined by how good my legs feel that week.

Thanks for the help guys!

While reading your last post - a line from Full Metal Jacket came to mind to sum up your getting up at 4 to bike in the moon light into a headwind: Hard Core Man!  Hard Core!

PS - Just for chuckles - Private Pyle, you are definitely born again hard! Hell, I may even allow you to serve as a rifleman in my beloved Corps.

I think last night was glenfiddich 12 year old then a little nip of some red label. I am not really much of a snob, I don't even mind sipping red label to be honest, and while a $200 bottle does taste better than a $30 bottle, to me at least it does not taste $170 better.

As you may have already figured out - I can be compulsive when it comes to something that I have an interest in... when I "discovered" it (since my mom drinks Dewers, I never realized how good it could be til I took a trip to Scotland.  I sampled so much of it that not only did I order Haggis for dinner - but I actually enjoyed it), I spent weeks sampling new kinds.  After spending close to 1,000 bucks, it hit me while standing in line with a $170 bottle of Lagavulin Cask Strength that I needed to put the bottle back and never walk down the scotch aisle again...  I would imagine that a crack addict might have the same epiphany...

24 hours from now, I will be done with my OLY... I spent the morning packing my tri bag and tuning my bike (my Uncle who is up here with us named it the black beauty)... So, I'm ready to head out the door.  My only concern is my wore ribs which I bruised while falling off a jet ski... I've iced, takin a boatload of advil and rested both yesterday and today.  It hasn't escaped me that I pulled my back 2 days before my Sprint in May... not manufacturing drama to increase the glory.  I'm a clutz with two sexy bulging discs...  The ribs won't be a problem on the bike or run but I plan to take some advil for the swim...

I've been working on my motivation for the race... think I've found something that's going to work... My cousin who bikes is up here as well and we've planned to go to a brewery on Sunday morning for a 40 mile ride along coast of Lake Michigan... If I beat my goal of 3:06 (completing the OLY at the same pace as my Sprint) than I get a burger, french fries and as much beer as I want to drink at the brewery.  If I don't make my goal - then I can have one sampler but I have to order something healthy of my cousin's choosing (there is liver on the menu).  If I beat my other goal of 2:56 (best cases scenario in all events) than I'm drinking my off on Saturday night while watching Nascar...

Good luck to you Thor as you taper for next weeks race.  Better beat your son or he's never gonna let you live it down...

Darren: What kind of Pheidippides-like training do you have planned? (minus the drop dead part of course...)

Kevin: How's the training going for the HIM?

BigDH - 2012-07-05 9:55 PM scotch night. once I get these munchkins to bed.

What are we drinking these days?  I had some Balvenie the other night that was FANTASTIC.

Was it the double wood?  I love that.  Agree with DH on $170 better.  I have a bottle of JW Blue.  It is very tasty just not THAT tasty.  Even at duty free I think we paid $150.  I say its not worth it but somehow I keep buying it?

I would imagine that a crack addict might have the same epiphany...

oh I love buying alcohol. I love buying it probably more than I like drinking it. I remember my uni days, drinking the cheapest stuff I could find......buying a nice bottle of scotch is a bit of a rush. Funny, I was reading an article 4-5 months ago and it was reviewing the best deals in scotch and Dewers White Label was listed 10th, something about when a blended scotch can taste this good it is difficult to justify spending more.

so for this weekend I have 4 hours on my hill planned. I need to get that done as next weekend I am going camping so probably not going to get anything in. Also have about 4 hours left on this horribly brilliant audiobook I am reading "Room", no spoilers please, it is brutal though....so yeah, gotta get through that, which helps give me a reason to get out and run.

OK - I've only got about 5 minutes until my battery dies but wanted to give you a quick update on my OLY today.

First and foremost - thanks for all the advice.  Not only did it prepare me for a good race but it allowed me to beat my goal of a sub 3 hour OLY.

I followed Kevin's pacing suggestion to the tee and saved just enough for a last second sprint towards the finish line with 200 yards to go.  With my kids cheering me on I went into an all out sprint and crush the finish line wondering when not if I would puke.  Here is the best part = my final time was 2:59:59!!!

More details when I recharge the lap top - but know this - the support I've gotten from the group really motivated me to push through the pain and make it happen.  Many thanks!
