Didn't set my alarm for 5 and just kept right on sleeping. I FINALLY feel caught up on sleep. It's a great feeling. My HM was certainly not a PR. LOL It was actually one of the worst races I've ever run - performance-wise. I guess it was a miracle that I finished the race though. Positives were that I nailed my HR zones, I never stopped running even when I wanted to stop, I fueled well and properly, and I never felt dehydrated. It was 80 degrees out, and people were passing out on the side of the course. I saw 4 ambulances (that I can remember). The funny thing is that the heat didn't bother me for a second. I mean, I was sweaty and hot, and I have an ugly sunburn to remind me of the morning, but it never bugged me at all. Anyway, my body is really broken today (not to mention my ego). These last 2 running races have hurt my confidence and have made me think hard about my ability. Yesterday I said I wanted to pull out of Grand Rapids in June, but I don't think I need to make a hasty decision. I need to see how the next 2 weeks go. I'm going to try a recovery spin later, but if it is too painful, I'm out for the day. Heat takes a lot out of you. Last year was my Olympic year. I did three of them. The first was 55 and raining and I froze. The next was 85 and humid. I felt good until I didn't which was half way through the run. I crashed hard and was running 12 minute miles. The last Olympic it was 93 and humid and it was a repeat of the second only worse. When I crossed the line the two people in front of me and behind me all went to the medical tent to get IVs. They handed me a towel that had been in an ice bucket and I sat with it around my neck for 15 minutes before feeling better. I was discouraged after both events but having had time to gain some perspective I think my plan and ego were just unrealistic. I should have paced better compensating for the heat but didn't. I think once you have some time to gain some perspective you won't be doubting yourself. I chose my events this year hoping to avoid the heat. My two HIMs are 6/16 and 9/9 and with my luck it'll be 95 and humid both days but last year they were 6/26 and 8/7 so at least my odds are better. Heat is tough to deal with. I'll be at Patriot this year. I'm going up on Friday night and training on the course over the weekend. I'll be there cheering. |

Why not just wear a wetsuit??? Ugh. Seriously??? Stupid question, is that legal? Nope. For some reason people freak out in non-wetsuit swims. If you don't feel comfortable swimming the distance without a wetsuit, you should probably re-assess whether its a good idea to enter the event. It was wetsuit optional though. Maybe they didn't want the 10 minute wait? IDK. Just shady. Watching the pros hammer it down the canal towards the swim exit in such an effortless manner was quite amazing though. |

You've had a great winter of training, don't let one event ruin your summer. You'll be fine.

Suck it up buttercup, one race does not make a season, if i took my training ride at Quassy Sunday as what my race is gonna be like, i might as well not even get out of bed. Shake it off and move on. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() rizer22 - 2012-05-20 9:02 PM Woke up this morning feeling much better and headed to Glastonbury for the Ten Penny Ale Shamrock Duathlon. One of my favorite events of the year. Had a good race today. 63rd out of 398 Overall and 11/29 in 35-39 AG. I thought turning 35 this year and moving up in age grop was going to help me. What a joke. There was some stiff competition at this event. Either way I was very happy with my performance today. Here is my race report:
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/races-edit.asp?raceid=210659
didn't help that the race had multiple national champs, and a world champ there. The Guy that won it is the reigning USAT Duatlete of the year and reigning AG world Champ, he did not also just win his AG in worlds, he won the whole freaking thing. you had some stout competition, you should be very happy with your result on a really tough course.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats to all that raced this weekend. Jen - congrats on the house. Very exciting! I raced yesterday, Beast of the East Half Steelman. It was a 1.2 mile swim (unless you got disoriented and swam off course) 53 mile bike, and half marathon run. It was a rough day. Hot and humid, temps were in the 80's. I did not have the day I had hoped for, so I can relate to some of the recent posts. Did I go in with too high of expectations and unrealistic goals? Was it just a bad day for me? Most of the run I thought about Vineman, and stressed about how I was going to complete a full distance when a half was such a struggle. I looked at the race results today. Only 30 people finished the race. It's always been a small race to begin with, it caps at 150. But this year I think less than 50 people started. I knew 3 other racers. My training buddy took OA female, she rocked it! Another friend had a great day. The third one called it quits 9 miles into the run. I think he should have sucked it up and finished, but he was feeling pretty ill. I won my age group - there were 2 in my age group. Ha! A total of 12 females finished, I was 4th female. (The race director announced yesterday that this year was the last year for this race.) I know this race is known to be one of the hardest half distance races in the area, but I still feel like I should have had a better day. After I crossed the finish I told my husband I was giving up triathlons, I felt that bad. Today I'm ready to redeem myself and get back to training! |

I think I just need this season to fully grasp what my strengths and limitations are, and then I will proceed from there. The second it becomes more negative than positive, is the second I need to reevaluate, because life is too short, and my kids won't be children forever. Yep it's supposed to be fun and as Bryan said a week or so back we're not pros. We all have families and real lives to deal with. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anybody ever have burning in the area where the hip, buttock and lower back meet? The area really doesn't qualify as any of the three so I can't figure out if it's hip flexors, part of the gluts....If I wasn't so close to my A race I'd probably take a few extra days off but on the other hand it's not painful and isn't impacting my performance. |

SI Joint is my guess. It's not in that area. If you put your thumb on your hip bone and went two inches down and two inches back towards the back it's there. It's a very fleshy area. It doesn't really fit IT Band, sciatic nerve pain, SI joint or hip flexors. Not really sure what to make of it. |

A friend of mine is a certified massage therapist and a kinesio tape certified and if I think your saying where I think it is then there are 6 muscles that run from your hip/buttocks/hamstring. I had a similar pain but perhaps a little lower and she said that it can happen to anyone of those muscles so it may be one of those? She massaged mine and I felt a lot better afterwards. WTH Scott. That's pretty damn funny. I think if I made it to the run portion, I hope I would find some weird guy in a devil suit chasing me, quite comical, and prob could use the humor at that point in the race. Question though. The triathlete in the photo (that would not be the guy in the devil suit) is carrying one of those hand held water bottles. Wouldn't that be an annoyance at that part of the race? For you Ironmen, and Iron Women, wouldn't a fuel belt be more practical? |
