After much discussion with my wife, who knows infinitely more than I do about most things, we've come up with a few ways to make some life altering changes for me. the rest of this is going to read like a fat guy in recovery. I am a 5'6" individual who is 30+ lbs. overweight. I'm this way do to eating and DRINKING choices after 6pm. each evening. I probably on average have 3-4 beverages an evening, and at least 1000-1500 calories after 6. life changes we discussed: 1. 6pk/wk.- I usually have around a case total in a weeks time +or- a few. 2. I'm getting on WW points system next week to take data and record changes. 3. About what I said earlier and goals, I've been going round with this for the last several years, and my heart is into it this time. I want to change, and the older I get, the harder it gets. I start Monday. |

I start Monday. Let me be the first to wish you luck on achieving your new goal. The good news is that you've successfully lost major chunks of weight before. I know we haven't met yet (when we do - the first fruit beer is on me), but if I know one thing about you - it's that you have a well of self control that I admire and wish I had. You can do this! Make your plan and then stick to it like you do a marathon training plan. This is one race you want to win. Crush it! The better news is that the BDAS and I will be here to support you on your journey. Let me know how I can help you and I will do what ever I can to help you get your weight to where you want it to be. Really there is no bad news. Losing the weight will make you: a better husband and father (and I know that is important to you), a more energetic teacher, a faster runner who will be able to run farther. Good luck! |

Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Anyone know why when I make a quote to a post it bunches the quoted post all up? It takes all the spacing out and just runs it all together. See my previous post and then Kevin's original post to see what I'm talking about when I say spacing. ETA: Scratch that I found it. I had turned on the editing tools to be like the old site and in the process it bunched it all up for some reason. It is turned off now and I tried it and it works fine. I start Monday. I hear what you are saying. You are a work out beast but the drinks will get ya. I feel good being down 90lbs from my fun times in the 30's but I could easily get 10 lbs off this body. (6'2'' and 200lb) I just don't want to lug that 10lbs through a 13.1 if you know what I mean. I probably drink the least out of all of you and should likely be banished from BDAS because of it. However, when I drink a beer I really feel like I appreciate it more now. Sometimes we do things out of habit. I love drinking coffee. I hated that caffeine made me crash in the afternoon when I was seeing patients (do patients like it when their doctor falls asleep while talking to them?). So, I got some really good decaf coffee (Britt from Costa Rica). Now caffeine is out of my system. Same for alcohol. Who does love a buzz from beer or wine? But they are a lot of calories. If you are unhappy with your body comp then that might be the thing to go easy on. The other thing that might be easier is to give up other grains/sugars if you have not done so. I try my best to limit grains and sugars (i believe they are toxic to the body). Do I still eat some? Yes. But they are pro-inflamatory on our old beat up bodies. I am doing enough stupid things to it already! Before I get off my soap box, you may want to check out: www.marksdailyapple.com Great site. Talks about paleo type eating but a little less crazy than some of the stuff out there. It really gets down to trying your very best to eat real foods as much as possible (single ingredient). Now, I am trying to decide if I should drink a pint of Chimay Peres Trappistes Ale Grande Reserve tonight. It is from the Scourmont Abbey in Belgium. It must be good since it sounds so fancy!!!!! I am just afraid I won't make it out biking in the am if I drink the whole thing (no laughing Keven.....I am a light weight now as I don't drink much....that is the other benefit). I might see if my wife wants half. She just retired yesterday. She was a breast cancer surgeon. There are going to be some changes around here. |

I feel that cutting back from 24 to 6 a week will make a huge difference. I just got glutonous over my summer off, and it's kind of hit a peak here. I'm looking forward to a 6pk. of quality (still no fruity stuff, however) over the quantity I have been imbibing in. I will be tracking points this week Weight Watcher style. Not really my thing, but my wife has seen huge results on this program, and I can appreciate a good thing. I'm with you in theory Bobby about less is more on the sugars and grains, I even believe that 90% of the stuff in grocery stores is garbage. Where it falls apart for me is in the application. This is what I will be focusing on this week and beyond. Goal for this week: Apply it. |

Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Second tri is in the books! I'm waiting for the timing company for my splits then I'll try to do a formal race report. Long story short I came in 265/617! Smoked it. Crushed my last race by nearly 6 full minutes and the transition area was 3x the size with a crazy long run from dismount and from the swim. I felt much better in the water this time but was still nervous getting in. I did about 100-150 extra yards of swimming since my sighting needs a heck of a lot of work Still slow on the swim but got to see 7 dolphins jumping as I went into the water. I think that played a big part on making it that much calmer mentally. Tore the bike up with an average of 19.4 mph and for the first 3 miles I couldn't get my bike on the big ring so I was spinning like a fool until it clicked....trust me you don't want to be at the LBS in the morning since they did a tune up just last Thursday.....I know shame on me for not checking it but still. After I got home and relaxed a bit my knee started to tighten up but I'm off to a hot bath to see what that does. All in all I wouldn't have traded this race day for anything. 1:17:09 final time! Thanks BDAS for all the motivation, tips, and just plain ole good conversation! P.S. I actually took a blue sharpie and wrote a little reminder to myself: S.I.U.N.B I think you all can figure what that stands for. |

Champion 5312 Calgary | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Originally posted by Qua17 Crazy thing happened today which I must share with you... I don't know if you all know this but 9 years ago my youngest son fell out of a third story window and suffered a serious TBI. He spent 3 months in a rehab hospital and thanks be to god, he came home with is 3 days before Christmas. The rehab hospital saved his life and it's my goal to raise 10 grand for them this year. So I am on the phone with the hospital today talking with the head of charitable giving. He has invited a doctor to join the conversation. This guy has done 9 IM... He tells me that he will do anything to help franciscan and get its name out there. So, he tells me he's going to help me find a bib for boston and that he is going to try to find one for himself so he can run it with me. And then... he offers to run IMMT with me. It's sold out - but he's going to get a spot through the IM charity... How awesome is that! I've got a running buddy! Lord help us. I'm gonna need everyone's help. I cant f$*@ this up! Jeepers, no pressure there. Remember buddy, slow and steady will win this race. |

Champion 5312 Calgary | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed well after spending the last 8 months in self imposed BT Forum Solitude I believe I may be ready to return. It took a bit (like to mother loving years), but I finally got my 100 mile gorilla off my back. I have spent the last 8 days in guilt free non workout nirvana, but I woke up Saturday feeling the itch and caved today with biking to work. So I am currently without a goal race. Maybe pick something up in February, but I got a couple months to think about that. In the meantime I am up 20 lbs from where I was on December 31, 2012. The big 200lbs, on the nail. Yikes. I tell you, ultra running is not necessarily for the slight of stature. I got 30 some days until this wedding and I don't want to feel like busted can of biscuits in my favorite GQ suit. So diet wise, well, for the last 2 months I have been having 2, count them 2, foot long ham subways a day. The beer consumption you ask, well lets just say I have a sneaky suspicion I would put Kevin's imbibing to shame, expensive beer, cheap beer, fruit beer....... Clearly, don't matter how much you bike and run when you are wolfing down the subs and sucking back the tall boys. So breakfast sub is out. Gonna stick with the lunch sub on days I run. Beer, yes beer is out, I figure that is good for a minimum of 5,000 calories a week. No more cream and sugar in the coffee. Just no more. So the plan is run easy 4 days a week. Run the stairs once a week. Maybe a long run on the weekend, but maybe not. Bike to work 3 times a week while weather allows. Foam rolling 5 nights a week. Push up challenge 3 days a week. 10 minute abs 3 days a week. Anyways, work is much busier than it was before, but I hope to be around and am counting on you guys to keep me accountable to the diet. |

After my housewarming party in August, I decided to quit drinking until after my marathon on 10/13. I've since determined that "pleasantly-buzzed-Charles-who-has-given-his-keys-to-his-wife" is much more fun to be around than "sober-Charles-who-f*ck-you-I-ran-20-miles-this-morning-and-am-sore". Also, those jerks at Red Lobster are having shrimp-fest again, with all-you-can-eat-shrimp. Shrimp are so delicious - to quote Denis Leary - meat is murder and murder tastes good, and shrimp are multiple murders in every delicious bite. The worst thing is that, despite giving up drinking and avoiding the shrimpocalypse, I still have managed to eat poorly. My consolation is that my 20-miler went well, and thanks to my new Hoka Tarmacs, I'm probably close to 100% today, and I ran mile #19 at my 10k pace, and mile #20 at 8:34; which is approaching my 5k pace. I feel good about the marathon, provided I can stay injury-free. |

The more I think about the odyssee we are all on - the more convinced I am that everything is tied together. You eat better when you are focused on your workouts. And you swim/bike/run better when you can stay away from having beer #3/#4/#5 in a single night (that was last Thursday for me). It will be interesting to see what will happen to our diets/habits as we head into a big year with a lot on the line. I'm not saying I'm going to be an angel - but I need to be better than I have been. We could always have a bet like last year During your absence - a bunch of use have started to use the app LoseIt with some success. Check it out if you are looking for accountability. Alex has been really good about getting on my case when I have strayed (I can't remember the last time he even blinked. I think he's close to hitting his goal weight. Is that right Alex?) Give it a try. I promise to bust your chops if you so much as think about that second ham sandwich |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Last night - I joked about having a weight loss contest to help us all stay on track. Last year we had a contest that worked like this - We all set weight loss goals. If we accomplished our goals in a certain amount of time - I think it was 3 months - we all got to keep our money. However, if we came up short, then we sent the winners (losers?) a prepaid visa cards. I'm the most competitive person I know and I've got to say it really helped me. In the past - our group was too big to make this work - but now I think it's just the right size. Any one interested? |

I don't have to go to work so I can wear jeans. Unfortunately - none of my three pairs fit! |

I promise to bust your chops if you so much as think about that second ham sandwich Okay, so I have tried to jump on the LoseIt bandwagon, and, maybe I'm missing something, but it just seems to, well, suck. In updating just the last 2 days, I've already had to add five items - including Hamburger Helper (yeah, I know, it was left over in the pantry from like two years ago), whey protein powder, and walmart stir-fry vegetables. Those items are pretty common. Secondly, and what grinds me the most, is that it doesn't let you override the calorie counts from exercise. For example, I put in yesterday's run, 72 minutes at 9:43/mile, so I'll go with 10min/miles - and it spits out 946 calories. That would be fine, but per my Garmin (with HR and elevation and my personal measurements), it's really only 801, a difference of 18%. So, instead I have to put it in as a custom exercise. Compared to myfitnesspal, with it's massive (and probably too big, and full of junk) database and easy custom calories, this seems like a major step back. I'll run them in tandem for a week and see how it goes. |

I'll run them in tandem for a week and see how it goes Charles - I just accepted your friend request on Loseit. Let me be the first to say that you have to find the mechanism that works best for you. I tried loseit livestrong and fitnesspal and ended up liking Loseit best. That doesn't make it the best - it just makes it the best for me. A couple thoughts to make lose it easier to use. 1) I agree about the calories counts. Mymyride and loseit give me vastly different calorie burned rates. To rectify this problem in my own mind - I just imput whichever number is small not by creating a custom exercise but by adjusting the time I worked out to make the calories what I want them to be. For me - mapmyride keeps track of milage and pace while lose it handles my calories. 2) Try scanning new foods like hamburger helper - the barcode reader in the upper left corner in the add food menu gets most of my stuff. If I can't find it and I know I will eat that food a lot, I will create a custom food - but if I know its something I don't eat a alot - I just find something that's close. Just my two cents. Its totally your call - just find something that helps you lose those 20 pounds. Don't feel bad - I want to lose almost 30. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Sorry about the massive amounts of posts from me this morning. I guess this is what happens when you don't work... I just finished my strength workout, which I'm proud to say is getting better. I seem to be getting stronger if only by a little bit. This is my third week doing it and I finally managed to do 10 lunges on each leg. The pain in my hip and knee remains there - nothing really painful but persistent. But here is a crazy fact that shows that I am making progress - if I manage to get in a 4 mile run tomorrow (and I am 95% sure I will) - it will be the first time that I have run 4 miles twice in 1 training week since LAST OCTOBER. Sad but true. So I will keep doing the strength exercises... |
