Extreme Veteran 484 Glen Burnie, MD | Subject: RE: Wishing I could taper.....but.... Tri-Wog StL - 2009-08-05 12:31 PM I'm still on the partially capable team.........tried to run two miles last night after a ride and my calf is still showing signs of soreness!! I am taking another full week of from running and going to be doing more overmileage bike rides and hope that I'll be O.K. come race day.........looks like a 1 week IM taper for me......yikes! Anyone else have any thoughts on how to keep things together while injured this late in the game? I was able to run 13.1+ at camp on July 25th and then the couple of miles last night.....I think if I can get the calf healed before race day, I should be able to suffer out to a decent IM marathon.... Paul I'm not sure what your particular injury/pain is but Massage Therapy and Acupuncture does wonders for muscle soreness/tightness and recovery from injuries. I was supposed to get surgery last winter for tarsal tunnel syndrome but instead decided to try massage and acupunture and I am 100% healed now - which I never would have been 100% w/surgery. If you call around and find a Massage Therapist that has worked with athletes and can do good deep tissues - you may get a little more sore until the next day, then your muscles will start to reap the benefits of the massage (the more water you drink, the less sore you will get). It's amazing the effect the MT and Acu have on recovery. I tell both that they are my "secret weapons" (oh shoot, I guess it's not a secret anymore). Anytime my muscles are feeling "twingey" and overly sore, I go in to see the massage therapist and I am back training at 100% the following day (although it's best to go the evening before a rest day). The Acupuncture is amazing for "spot treatments". Like, for example, with the help of my MT, we've traced my ankle problem from last winter to my left hip so tomorrow I am going into the acupunturist to have him put needles in my hip and get it to loosen up since it's not responding to the massage. It may cost you a little bit of money but with something as important as IMKY coming up, it's def worth the investment. I am so amazed at the power of Massage (done right) that I've gone back to school for Massage Therapy so I can work on all my triathlete friends Not sure if you've had any person experience with either before, but that's my experience and opinion. |

Some soreness might be expected but I wouldn't say it is "normal" to be injured. |

Paul Paul, I just read this the other day. I too have some calf soreness which I believe is a lingering effect of tearing my soleus muscle from the achilles last summer. I tyr to get massages every few weeks and it helps a ton. This article hit home for me. http://www.slowtwitch.com/Training/Running/Mad_calf_disease_926.html |

Master 1411 Lexington, KY | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I'm pretty beat up right now in a few places, but think taper will fix most of that. The thing that keeps me up at night is the marathon. Probably in much higher temps than I have been training in. |

Member 30 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Are we there yet!?!?! From the looks of things, it appears that I am not alone on the broken down body feeling! Hang in there everyone! So besides my body starting to fall apart physically – My mind is starting to play tricks on me. I’ve been thinking about the swim a lot lately and have been contemplating getting a speedsuit. I’m wondering if anyone else was planning on wearing one and if so which one? I am just now starting to learn about them. I am not necessarily looking for extra speed but rather looking for a more comfortable swim. This will be my first triathlon without a wetsuit and I am starting to get nervous. Thanks everyone! |

I am wearing the blue seventy suit. In my exhausted overtrained mind I cannot remember the name of it but it is the one that alot of the pros were wearing in Hawaii last year. I've used it a couple times in open water and haven't noticed it helping me out any. But I am not that great of a swimmer to begin with. |

Veteran 283 Va Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I did 121 on the bike yesterday and 5400m swim and 21 mile run today. It's all downhills from here. Bike is in the shop for final tune-up. Good luck everyone with your final training and stay safe. I'll be in Louisville on Fri for work, hopefully the city has drained by then. Starting to get my list together, I tend to rush and forget stuff, so I'm starting early this time. If any of you IM vets have a good checklist I would love to see it. Jim |

THIS IS AWESOME (as well as hillarious and helpful). GOOD CALL. Finished my last long ride today. Did 100 mi. Funny, even after all the 100 and 100+ mi rides I've done...100 miles is still a long way to ride. It's all good though. May the Mighty Ohio reach normal levels and be clean. We'll do the rest. Expert 760 Memphis, TN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Ok I am going to be lazy and ask again instead of reading though 73 pages..do we get 17 hours to fnish no matter when we enter the water, or is it 17 hours minus the time spent in line for the swim? I thought it was 17 hours, but the athlete pack says the course closes at 12:00 andyou have 17 hours from the time the first age grouper enters the water. I don't plan on using all 17 hours, but was wondering what the correct rules are. |

Overall finish times will reflect the time at which each athlete enters the water, not the 7:00 a.m. start time. |

Run: Officially closes at 12:00 a.m. Any athlete still on the run after this time will be considered DNF. |

Extreme Veteran 360 Jacksonville, FL | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Here's the deal with race timing & cut-offs: 2. The course officially closes 17 hours after the FIRST age grouper starts - so 12:00am 3. The swim cut off is 2:20 after the last swimmer starts. Meaning if the last person gets in at 7:30, the cut-off time is 9:50am. Still in the water then, you're DNF'd 4. The bike course has 2 time thresholds: (a) if you don't start the 2nd loop by 2:15pm, you're DNF'd, and (b) if you don't finish the bike segment by 5:30pm, you're DNF'd. 5. The run course also has 2 time thresholds: (a) if you don't start the 2nd loop - mile 14 - by 9:00pm, you're DNF'd, and (b) again, if you're not done by 12:00am, the course closes.
Hope that helps! Edited by JPS0135 2009-08-06 9:29 AM |
