Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am not sure if I mentioned it here or not, but I was in a car accident on thursday. No one was hurt or anything, the other car needs very very minor repairs, but my car's entire front end needs to be replaced (not the engine related stuff, just the exterior) and is in the shop for a week. Originally I thought that it really really sucked, but now I've found that I am actually enjoying being without it. I am doing a lot more biking in combination with buses. My friend bought me an awesome pannier as an early birthday gift. I am planning on swinging by a used bike store later today to pick up a rack. My front bumper had a bit of damage anyway, getting it replaced now with insurance costs less than paying to replace it on my own. Also...In my general conversation with my insurance agent I mentioned that I am working on a horticulture degree. It turns out that he is best friends with a very well connected local Horticulture professional and volunteered to get me in touch with him. He manages some very prestigious estates in my area and could be looking for another employee. ![]() All in all, there are a lot more positives than negatives coming out of my little fender bender. ![]() |

![]() good to hear nobody got hurt...I held my breath for a little while thinking "car accident" mean a car hit you while you were on your bike... |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alright, I wondering if I'm just a big baby. So, on my ride today, I hit some new high speeds on a couple of descents. The one descent was probably over a mile and I hit 45 MPH before I decided to started tapping the brakes. Bike handled really well though. No speed wobbles. I just got a little worried about the speed and the debris and gravel on the shoulder of the road. Opinions? Baby or justified? Have you guys carried these speeds on your road bikes? Let me have it! |

Highest speed I have clocked was 42 mph...on a road bike...on a smooth surface road with no cross traffic. I was in the middle of the right lane, so no issues with the shoulder debris. I wasn't even trying to hit a top speed...I was just trying to catch up with a pack in front of me...but still trying to stay within safe limits. I suppose I could have hit 45+ if I wanted to...but probably would have pooped my pants. I would say justified though...going 46 or 47 is nothing to brag about if you end up going down...better to be on the safe side |

Have you guys carried these speeds on your road bikes? Let me have it! What kind of a road is it? If it were a fire road, then I would say its pretty brave. Don't know what my top speed is off road. If it were a regular road, then I'd say buck up camper. Brakes are for wimps. My top speed on my hardtail is 60 mph on an asphalt road coming out of a canyon. One important lesson I learned is you don't sit in your seat at high speeds. I small bump in the road can bounce you off your bike. |

Have you guys carried these speeds on your road bikes? Let me have it! If you're "gut" is telling you to hit the breaks, then it's probably a good idea to HIT THE BREAKS! I also hit 45 mph on a downhill and I found it to be pretty terrifying. If you can hit that same hill a few more times and get more comfortable, then you can probably push it. I'm big into going fast, but when the speed is up near that 40mph, I start to hear my mother's voice in the back of my head, "Oh, for goodness sake, William... SLOW DOWN!" I hit 40 mph in my aerobars once or twice and I'm so terrified that I'm scared to move my hands back to the horns. Better safe than sorry. |

I spent some time Friday sending out notes on Facebook to some people I haven't seen for a while. I have been trying to let people know they are important to me, that I appreciate their friendship, that they've had an impact on my life, etc., and its been great. I contacted three people on Friday. I saw someone after the race that I haven't seen in a few years and spent two hours talking to him. Then yesterday someone that I met when I was a missionary in England 26 years ago sent me a note. That is really cool Paul! |
