dharris13 - 2010-05-24 9:02 AM Whats going on training wise today?

I did 30 min swim this morning. No "pain" in the groin...but i could feel something a little wierd in that area. Arms were dead and i had nothing...but it felt good to be doing something..even if it was a dreadful swim.

Will go for a little ride after work

Nice job getting back into it! I think your body will probably react well in the end from you taking some time off to rest up and heal.

Rest day for me today, I had a really big week volume wise for me last week so I'm happy to have a day off today. Planning a nice dinner at home tonight with my husband. I try to spend my rest days spending time with him since I feel like the rest of the time I'm off training or working and we don't get a lot of time together.

PennState - 2010-05-23 4:34 PM Update:

I ended up DNFing. This was the most disorganzied event I have EVER done. Lots of people went waaay off course. No maps except difficult to read online ones and course had minimal volunteers and minimal marking for direction. Lots of turns here and there. Needless to say I went off course a few times.

I'm pretty upset about it, but there were some positives.
1. Swam well.
2. Stayed calm when a group of us went 2.5 miles off course on the bike.
3. Stopped to help a guy who had a wicked crash on the bike. Nice that he was ok and Karma has a way of coming around sometime
4. Ran really well until I was directed the wrong direction (again).
5. Did my nutrition well.

I've never DNFed anything and truthfully I could have finished but was too frustrated and saw this better as a long training day. Had I finished the run it would have been 15+ mile run.

Fred, great attitude for what I imagine was a very expensive/frustrating training day.  I would have to say your taking it much better than I would.  Thankfully this is not your A race for the year, can you imagine those who have trained for their for first HIM only to be misguided or neglected while on the course?  I'm sure the race director is going to get quite the feedback.  But this race does bring up a few points:  Venue / Volunteers

- I have no idea what your race costs, but a WTC HIM event will cost you $250 plus your one day registration.  I know that after basically a years worth of training the last thing a Triathlete should need to worry about is a mis-marked course and bad course information. (How much for a can of road/spray paint to put arrows on the road or small signage at turns?)  For me the $250 is worth it because I know that WTC has the reputation for taking care of the details, it's their full time job.  As most are aware they have been buying up the top local HIM/IM events lately.  This is the case for my HIM in Racine.  There are a great number of independent races with awesome reputations which are run just as well.  However I would encourage everyone to check out race reports and talk with others who have already done the race to be sure it is a good venue prior to signing up.

- Volunteers - Will make or break any race.  Can't have a sucessful race without a large base of volunteer support.  This of course is especially true for a HIM/IM distance event.  Got to show your love for volunteers and volunteer when you have the chance.

Absolutely agree.   Fred, was it a first year event or an established race?  I tend to give first year events a little more leeway with making mistakes and especially with not having many volunteers.

I went and volunteered for a local 5k on Saturday for the 'Girls on the Run' organization.  That was an awesome event and they were well organized with the use of their volunteers.

I then went and volunteered at a local sprint tri on Sunday.  I've competed in races put on by the organizer and from a competitors perspective it they do a very good job.  From a volunteer perspective I ended up with a different opinion and appreciate the volunteers more at events by this organizer.  On more than a few occasions I wondered if they even remembered I was there to help them or if it was just that they only talk to the cute female volunteers.  I'll still volunteer, but most likely for a different race organizer next time.

We had a fairly large temperature swing happen over the last week here in Colorado.... from snow, rain and hail to 85 degree weather in a matter of a week.  It completely caught me off guard hydration wise.  Coupled with a decent amount of on going fatigue from training and standing out in the sun while volunteering... I ended up taking the weekend to simply recover.  I definitely wasn't taking in enough fluids for the past week and just felt too weak to get any good training in.

But today, I feel well rested, rehydrated and ready to get back to some solid training.  I kind of miss the colder weather though when you can be a little lax on your fluid intake.

Glad you feel well rested. yeah that first week of going from BSing hydration in winter to warm weather is always a wake-up call

Haven't yet decided if I'm going to workout or not. I was out of town working and ate at Chili's for lunch. Now it seems like sleepy time instead of workout time. We'll see how motivated I am in a little bit. I would like to get a run in today.

I just blogged about my latest bike ride/lesson learned in the mountains and thought I would post the link here.

Apparently, I need even more clothing for this sport!

PennState - 2010-05-25 5:16 PM Sorry to be not around so much the last few days, as I've been in Toronto visiting family. I've been swimming a bit and thinking about my disaster race a bit. Overall it was a good things as I news to continue to remind myself that this sport is primarily for fun and trying to hard to win my AG etc takes too much fun out of it. Essentially its all good now as a few days have passes. Anybody else getting any good training in?

I snuck an hour on the trainer before work this morning.  Yesterday was just strength training, and I used a new ab machine! I thought I had done well with my core work, but I can definately feel my abs today!  Mid-long run tomorrow, plus I suppose I should suck it up and get in the cold pool I have available.

I guess that is true, especially the routes you are taking!!!  I am learning to enjoy dressing warmer and riding in less than perfect conditions, but still struggle heading out knowing I will be colder than I like!!  Funny thing is I prefer the colder weather for running!

Training was good this morning-just an easy 1 1/2 hour spin on the bike-a-rooni.

I work for the local Y and tonight they are having a staff open swim so hubby and I are going to go after hours for a swim-we feel like rebels!

I had a race on Sunday-won the Athena division.  I was on the fence about racing this division.  I meet the 150+ lbs criteria but felt a little guilty...but, now I figure that if I race as an Athena I'm more likely to win stuff. =)

Despite all the injury issues I felt fine except the last 4 miles of the run, but really it was just a nagging ache in my side-no biggie.  If it had been Lake Placid then I would have slowed my pace down.  But, I went for it since it didn't feel like something that I could exacerbate.

I looked at the BT training plan and this is a recovery week for me, but I've got a 120 + mile bike ride coming up on Saturday. WOOHOO!

I took the weekend off (with the exception of volunteering for those two races, a 5k and a sprint tri).  So yesterday I was feeling a bit antsy to get out for a run.  Got home, didn't have much of a plan, so I got two bike water bottles together, grabbed my ultra waist belt, threw my cell phone, money, some clif shots and two clif bars in it and headed out the door.  Ended up being out there for 3 hours and doing 17.2 miles.  Felt great too, didn't care were I went or how fast, just went for a run.  My friends commented: "Dean Karnazes style huh?" ... I guess so, just not quite as far as him

Today I was still feeling awesome, went out for my usual group run... we started off easy and I realized I was just feeling TOO good to be going that slow, so I started increasing the pace every mile.  My previous PR for that run (~5.1 miles) is 39:39... even with starting so slow for that first mile, I set a new PR, 38:25!  And I felt I could have I could have continued that pace.

I now have a really hard decision to make.  I have the San Diego Marathon in just under 2 weeks.  2 months ago I ran a half marathon in 1:36 here in Denver.  Which is basically the pace I need to BQ.  Two months of solid training + sea-level = me thinking I can hold that pace for the entire marathon.  So my choice is:  Do I go for my original goal I set back in January of 3:25 (which I think I can easily do)... or do I go for broke, hit the half marathon point on pace at 1:34-1:35 and see if I can hold the 7:15 pace needed to BQ with a 3:10.  I could potentially blow up, but by that point, even if I did... I'd still be setting a new PR since the only mary I have done was a 4:02 back in February (I 'took it easy' that race to enjoy it and get the experience, plus it was hilly and at 4k feet in Sedona).
