I am so excited, my A race is this weekend on Saturday.  I'm not sure if I shared with the group why I ever even started training for a tri - last year my best friend, Ruby asked me early in the summer if I would do a tri with her.  I said yes but I was too lazy to start training and never ended up doing it with her.  Instead, I watched her cross the finish line at the Maple Grove Tri and felt pretty cruddy taht I didn't get my butt in shape to do it with her.

So, this year I decided to not let that happen.  This year, I am going to be racing with my best friend (who by the way delivered her second child on July 21 - just five weeks ago).  I'm so happy we are going to be able to do it together.

My goals for this race:

  • Beat my times on my first tri (it shouldn't be too difficult as the bike is much easier and the run is 1/2 miler shorter)
  • Beat her times last year
  • Have a great time

I can't wait!

There's 4000 feet of ascents in roughly 25 miles? 160 feet per mile? WOW!

I think my steepest ride has been about 30 feet per mile, according to map my ride, and that was killer. Is that what they are listing on their site? I wonder if that's off of somebody's Garmin or is it up into the Rockies?

This lists it out as 3015 feet of climbs which is still just sick at just over 25 miles. You better start training some huge hills and get used to keeping your cadence slower and steady and keeping your heart rate below 158 consistently.

The bike for the Olympic Distance Tri will now start and finish at Castaic Lake and follows a similar but shorter course than the Long Course Tri. The course is categorized as “European Style” for its narrow long climbs, steep descents and epic views.

Stamford had some descents like this and I was scared and yours are going to be much more dramatic. I'd also get used to doing these descents on the pursuit bars not the aero bars for more control.

I had an awesome brick this morning. First brick since the NYC TRI. Leading up to the TRI I was doing lots of bricks. Funny how weird it felt starting to run after just a 17 day layoff from bricks. It only took a quarter of a mile to get my sea legs under me but wow did I feel off especially that first tenth of a mile.

I'm going to seriously hate having to take my workouts back indoors. I left my house this morning at 5:42AM and sunrise wasn't until 6AM. Civil twilight is a half hour before sunrise so I had light but some of the back roads near my house are heavily wooded. It was a little bit unnerving when I heard cars coming for the first twenty minutes. With work I really can't push my start times back too much more. Scary that I was starting a full hour earlier not that long ago.

I know what you mean... I went for a 24 mile bike ride yesterday after work (which ended up being 26) and thought I'd be home with ample enough sunlight to do a 1 mile run but it got dark on me...  Looks like I'm gonna be shopping around for a bike trainer soon when daylight savings happens.  That or move my workouts to the morning.  =)

You should get a trainer before the season ends... Trainers are essential for recovery rides as the tempo will always be the same and you don't have to worry about elevation changes.  HR Spikes etc

This is really good information.  Thanks for finding it for me.  I'm glad it's not 4000 continuous (as a rep from Renegade Racing mentioned in an email while inviting me for a test ride, it looks like she meant total).  My MHR IS 184 and Z4 starts at 157bpm.  I agree with you with maintaining the cadence, power, and HR.  I have done a 2600 foot climb that's about 6-7 miles long near my house a few times so I'll be sure to get more practice in before that race happens.

Oh boy am I gonna love the descents!  I've got conventional drop handlebars on my bike so I'll be leaning forward and holding onto the drops/hoods and fingers on brakes.  With all the hills, I'm gonna save upgrading to aeros next season...

I was into body building in my 20's and didn't shave so triathlons aren't going to get me to do it either. However if I was to shave something it would be my legs long before my chest. I'm lucky as I'm not that hairy to begin with and have little to no back hair.

I think you should get a Brazilian first so that way nobody can see it and if that goes well get the legs next.

Yeah it's more of a safety thing than anything. If god forbid you ever crashed, and have hair on your legs. It's bad because it will put the skin while dragging on the ground

I did crash thanks to a Saab but I had on long sleeves and took the impact all in my upper half. I hadn't thought of it from a safety aspect.

Back from the Alaskan cruise and in Seattle.  Outside of alittle running I took the majority of the week off, but did tons of hiking and it was hilly, great views, wow.  Also, made my husband take the stairs on-board the ship everywhere....gotta burn off some of those calories.  My quads were sore for the first 4 days.  So back to MN tomorrow morning and actually looking forward to getting back to training.  Will starting with building my base and doing some 5K's.

It was fun to read the posts on what I missed during the week and my opinion is that you guys should ALL shave your legs!!!  Seriously, it's a hot look for a man honest, just look at those bikers in the Tour....Laughing  This could be a real male bonding experience for y'all.
