Thanks Karl.  I guess I **sort of** work legs since most of my workouts are things like kettlebell swings, get ups, body weight exercise, so there is a little leg work in there.  I just worry a little since I'm one of those people who gains weight and size very easily in my upper legs/glutes, and I have noticed all good endurance athletes are pretty lean in those areas.

Jen, do you do anything else with the kettlebells?  I started with them when I started changing my lifestyle four years ago and really like using them.  And for Dina, kettlebells do seems to naturally address some imbalances due to the types of movements required to control it.  They're just a tool I guess, but I've really enjoyed the active movement of using them.

I just got back from a nice 5 miler.  It has finally started to really come down, so it was slow going but not much accumulation yet so it wasn't too bad.  It's interesting that sometimes 18 degrees seems not too bad, other times it feels pretty extreme.  Today it felt COLD.  Of course, there's a little wind so that probably doesn't help.

This is all very helpful. I have been doing both legs at the same time but wondering exactly what you just mentioned. I already know my weak side is my left. It is very obvious when I do my PT exercises. So now the weight will probably go down to 20 lbsEmbarassed but at least I am trying!

It can be hard to do, but forget the weight and just focus on the form and the effects.  Even if it's just air at first, getting the movement right and the stress on your muscles right is what really will give you benefits.  Remember why you're doing these lifts.  Always visualize your healing and what you're doing to promote that.

I'm getting ready for the storm, though it's barely flurries at this point.  I'll post some before and after pictures when it's over, probably on Sunday.  My plan is to run today at lunch and also tomorrow in the AM during the blizzard.  I'll sat out if it if the wind is dangerous, but it's looking like it will be doable.

Thanks for the leg extension discussion.  I often wonder if it's ok to work legs while still maintaining a pretty intense bike regiment.  My legs tend to blow up when I lift, so I don't really do any weight training for my legs, though I do some for buttocks/hip/core.  What think the weight lifters about not doing any leg workouts?

9 pounds!  I can't even fathom how that gets done.  Kathy worked for 20 hours before our first just wouldn't come out, so she finally had a c-section, much against her wishes.  For the record, I was 10 weeks early.  I sometimes wonder if my lung capacity would be higher had I stuck around - I know the lungs are the last to develop and the use of steroids to accelerate lung maturity wasn't used until the 70s I believe.

Yeah, same here....a bunch of my guys didn't show up for work today and it wasn't bad driving home around 2 at all.  Right now it's snowing like crazy though....I would say we are around 5 or 6 inches....just a dusting.  If I had to guess, I would say maybe an inch an hour at this point.  Nice fluffy stuff though.  Real easy to snow-blow or shovel.  The only issue with this storm is the wind.  There are some pretty good drifts.  The plows are doing a great job.

Today is my off day.  Besides snow blowing and shoveling like crazy, I'm pretty psyched to just sit and watch some TV today.  I have to head into work early tomorrow, so my longer bike will have to wait until I get home.

Saw this Garmin 405CX on sale today only for $129... looks like it is refurbished but comes with a 1 yr warranty... not sure if this is a great deal or not... brand new one on amazon is $160 w/ free shipping and maybe no tax depending on where you live.

Garmin watch

That's a pretty good watch, Will.  I have a friend who owns a slightly older model, but essentially the same thing.  If the size of the watch is appealing, you can't go wrong.  In my opinion, if you don't care about the size of the watch and are looking for something that will do multisport on a budget, get a Timex Global Trainer.  People end up liking the Garmin more just because they can easily upload the garmin to the website, but I've been using the Global trainer for a little over a year now and it's a great option for anyone on a budget.  The best part about this watch is that you can swim with it during your races.  I think you'll be able to find a used one for around $100.

I would love to look like female power lifter.... you mean to tell me as an endurance athlete that is not consuming 5,000 calories of protein on daily basis is not going to get me there? Darn.

5k calories a day will get you somewhere but I don't think it will get you to the finishing line faster.  At least not for a podium.

I doubt you want to look like some of the power lifters I used to see when I was competing.  My mom still jokes about a woman she saw in the bathroom at one of my meets that she SWORE was a man.  She remembers her name and everything!  She was quite the specimen.

pistuo - 2013-02-08 12:51 PM Dirk - you sure it's a good idea to add a 5th run?  Is it worth the risk?

Probably not!  But I am planning on waiting a couple of more weeks before I decide what to do.  I told my ART specialist today that I had to do some serious discussion with myself last night to NOT run a couple of extra miles.  My foot felt amazing last night!!!

Since we are discussing my foot, I'll give a report on my run today.

It went pretty well.  So well in fact, that I ran an extra mile.  16 miles in the plan and I turned it into 17 with 2 miles at above my marathon BQ pace.  The 2 miles at "pace" were supposed to be a little slower, around 7:30-7:45.  I ran them at 7:27 and 7:14 respectively.

My foot felt really good through mile 8 and then it began to have a small amount of pain up to mile 13 when it became moderate.  Once I finished the run I came home took 3 ibuprofen, had my Muscle Milk (made with milk) and ART about 1.5 hours later and now my foot feels pretty good.  A very minor amount of pain.  I plan to take some Aleve before bed to take away any inflammation overnight but I am not sure I need it.

Next week is a recovery week so I get to draw back a little bit and recover.  A 12 mile run will be on the plate for next Friday.  Man!  I love recovery weeks!!!

Will, for the watch I can't really provide much commentary on that one.  Only that I would make sure you can get some data from the bike with that one.  I love my 910XT but that is definitely in a different price range!!  I also know nothing about the Timex Global trainer either.  I would say Jonathan knows what he's talking about since he owns one.

Well I didn't get my swim in like I should've today and I feel like a slacker for passing on it. I did get the bike workout done earlier in the late afternoon and I wanted to go get a run in but it's not really snowing here much. We are getting freezing rain, sleet and snow so I had to pass on the run. I think running in that stuff with the wind is just too dangerous and not worth the risk plus I wound up having to work tonight so by the time I finish and we start getting some snow it's going to be too late to run. I'll wait until tomorrow and run after I dig out of whatever we wind up getting.

I heard yesterday that we are releasing some of our tree crews to head toward Ma. to help with the restoration that is bound to be required.

I do not want anymore snow or weather to impact my training!!!!  I am 8 weeks away from Boston and I don't want to take anything away from my schedule!  I am actually worried about some early spring storms keeping me away from any running at all, even my short stuff.  So far I have only missed one short run.  I am sure the 3 miles I had planned didn't really have any negative impact but about March is when we can begin some spring storms that can take me away from training for several days.

Anyway,  you guys be safe out there!  I don't want to hear anything about any injuries as a result of running in a blizzard or anything else.  But I have to admit, running out in that sounds like a great memory to create.  Kind of like when I ran the epic race through knee deep water December of 2011.  I would love to do that again!!!

Do you all have a reference for working with kettleballs like a website or video? The Y has a ton of them all lined up in pretty colors in the closet but as far as I know no one is using them/not been trained yet. I let the kids in my toddler gym class play pumpkin patch with the orange and yellow ones but that might be the most use they have seen! You know me, I'll pick up something new and throw out a shoulder or hip or something .

And I know just what you mean about the weather. We had a 20 degree day last week that was sunny with no wind and it was much nicer than the 38 degree day we had today!

Hahaha!  I used to go to a gym that had a bunch of power lifters.  Both guys and she-men.  I called one guy "monkey man" because he had to swing his legs and arms around himself just to walk!  I just don't get it.  I feel like us triathletes are much more healthy.

Just for the record.....I live in an area with a bunch of weirdos.

First, a couple of transients with pet yaks are parading around town.  About a year ago, they were squatting in a vacant house near my aunt's house with their yaks and goats.  I thought they were gone.  Nope!  They're back.  Not sure where they are living but they are taking their yaks for walks in front of the gym.  Yep!  I'm sure there are some laws that are being violated.

Have you seen that video of the axe-wielding hippie?  Yep....he's from here, too.

Good gawd!  I'm an openminded individual, however, this is a bit much.

I have a quiet minute to myself this morning so was able to do a little catching up.
I hope all of you east coasters are surviving the storm. We didn't get anything here just a lot of wind. Unfortunately for my husband back in Wisconsin he crashed his car, he is fine the car not so much, and one of another one of my sisters ended up in a ditch. She is ok too.
As I read, I feel like it is a recommendation to do no or very light weights, I have been doing some pretty heavy work (for me ) just 1x per week, but like I said earlier I love lifting ( no I do not want to be a body builder .... But as I close in on 50 I feel like I had lost so much muscle and honestly felt very weak. Since I started I have had a huge improvement in all 3 areas, along with the benefit of my cloths getting looser!

Just a quick update from the Northeast.  I got to work this morning all right.  They have been trying to keep up with the snow, but it's so windy that the roads have literally 4 foot tall drifts across them....like big triangles of snow.  It's very weird loooking.  There would be a 4 foot wide triangle with a peak and then bare road and then another one 100 feet down the road.  I basically was the only one out there, so I just pushed through with my truck.  Then walking into work, I trudged through snow waist high for about 100 feet.  Now I'm sitting at my desk all sweaty.

The three dogs at our house are in absolute heaven.  They couldn't be more happy galloping around in this mess.

Unbelievable this storm! We lucked out over where I am on the south shore of LI. I only got about a foot of snow but further north of me they got 2 feet. All the major highways on LI are closed. It's a mess cars stranded everywhere on the Long Island Expressway.

I got up eary and dug out the yard somewhat to take the dog out. She loves the snow and was running around like a maniac. I also dug out my running path. It tool me an hour or so and a lot of effort but I am going to do a long run today in the snow. I can't wait. It is still snowing but the worst is over. I still have to dig out the cars and driveway but will do that a little later. Still trying to warm up after being out for 90 minutes.

Jo sorry to hear about your husband and the car. I'm glad to hear that he is alright thankfully. I know it sucks with the car but that can be replaced.

That's hardcore Jonathan!

We're doing great over here, but my snow blower died toward the end of the first clearing late last night.  I got it done, but I'm hoping it makes it through the final clearing tonight.  Not sure what's going on with it, but I think it may just be a fuel line issue or needed a new plug.

I'm about to head outside with J as he absolutely loves the snow.  And my dog doesn't know what to do with himself out there.  He's a total spazz he's so excited.

I think it was bigfoot's cousin that was leading one of the yaks around.  He *almost* has more hair than the yak.  And......his uni-dread (which has to weigh 50 pounds) was tied up about a foot above his head!  Good grief!  I hope I don't run into them on my bike ride today!

BTW.....it's beautiful and sunny, albeit, very chilly.  I hope you east coast people come out of this storm with relatively little damage.  Sorry about the car, Jo.  Glad your husband is ok.

Man I just got done shoveling all this freakin snow. I think I spent 4 hours all total doing the yard for the dog and then the driveway. I also had to dig out my van as I couldn't move it because the battery died so I wound up having to do alot more than I should've had to do. Even with all that shovel which was a great workout by the way I am definitely going to go out in hour or so and go run. I didn't clear out my running path for nothing!

Same here Tony.  I am 6'3" tall and the snow bank is so high I can't see the first floor windows from the street.

Along those lines, I know I have said that my elbows have been bothering me, well after clearing all the snow they are just aching like mad.  I am supposed to get on the trainer, but I'm going to take some ibuprofen and drink beer.  I think that will solve this problem.

Warren, my buddy and I are going hiking tomorrow morning at Castle in the Clouds.  I know it's last minute, but if you want to get some snowshoeing in, let me know.

I would love to do join you, but I'm a single dad.  We sent Kathy to Aruba to have a mid-winter getaway for a birthday present.  Perfect timing for her.

I finally got the P2 ready for the trainer today, so I can't wait to ride it tonight.
