I'm feeling very thankful to have a dry house. We got evacuation orders twice for flooding and the water got a few blocks from our house. So, I have not been working out. On top of that, apparently I bake when I'm freaked out. And eat. I made two dozen cheesy biscuits that disappeared come the next sun up. There were some chocolate chip cookies too- but at least half of them are still in existence. All of my old running biking paths are destroyed and a ton of roads are still closed. It's so weird I feel like I've been in a different universe for the past 5 days. I still have a tri this weekend- but I am really questioning doing it if it goes ahead (already postponed a week) b/c so many water treatment plants are out I just can't image the flood water is not nasty. Hopefully they will postpone it a little longer. Just wanted to check in and say hi! |

New user 180 Auburn, AL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Confession Time: I have been really slack since my last race, about 6 weeks ago. I cut my foot pretty badly during the swim (finished the race though) and it hurt to wear shoes for about 3 weeks after. I used that as an excuse to do nothing productive and have keep that up. My weight has been going up and my fitness has been going down. Last week I decided it was time to change things up. I convinced my wife I should do Ironman 70.3 Raleigh next summer. So no more excuses it's time to get after it. I have 37 weeks to get my self in fighting shape! I have managed to get in 3 runs and 1 bike since I set this goal so I'm at least moving in the right direction. I need to get in the pool though. 1.2 miles is a lot longer than my sprint swims of 400 meters if my math is correct. Wish me luck and once again thanks for all the support! Sorry be being AWOL for awhile.

If the water at the race is horrible then you will just have to swim so fast that your body only skims the surface I'm with you though on the idea of what got all mixed up in that water. |

I have been forced on the roads which has sucked. Of course, having the paths destroyed is a small inconvenience to that faced by many, but it sure changes things up. |

The beer consumption you ask, well lets just say I have a sneaky suspicion I would put Kevin's imbibing to shame, expensive beer, cheap beer, fruit beer....... Clearly, don't matter how much you bike and run when you are wolfing down the subs and sucking back the tall boys. [...] Anyways, work is much busier than it was before, but I hope to be around and am counting on you guys to keep me accountable to the diet. I know the feeling. After my housewarming party in August, I decided to quit drinking until after my marathon on 10/13. I've since determined that "pleasantly-buzzed-Charles-who-has-given-his-keys-to-his-wife" is much more fun to be around than "sober-Charles-who-f*ck-you-I-ran-20-miles-this-morning-and-am-sore". Also, those jerks at Red Lobster are having shrimp-fest again, with all-you-can-eat-shrimp. Shrimp are so delicious - to quote Denis Leary - meat is murder and murder tastes good, and shrimp are multiple murders in every delicious bite. The worst thing is that, despite giving up drinking and avoiding the shrimpocalypse, I still have managed to eat poorly. My consolation is that my 20-miler went well, and thanks to my new Hoka Tarmacs, I'm probably close to 100% today, and I ran mile #19 at my 10k pace, and mile #20 at 8:34; which is approaching my 5k pace. I feel good about the marathon, provided I can stay injury-free. Always feels good to finish a run super strong. That is a quality run for sure. I love the Tarmacs, super smooth ride. |

Good stuff all, and hope everyone has a great rest of the week and great effort to meet and exceed your goals. I lost .6 yesterday, and am hoping for another loss today. I am not totally Feeling it, but who cares, I'm making strides towards healthier self, and still allowing myself a beverage or two to boot. Workout was tough this morning to get motivated for, but I got in and got it done. I hate the 8:00 Tuesday and Thursday staff meeting, as I have to wake up :30 min earlier, but oh well. I'm taking a get r' done approach to all this. Next goal is a October HM, then I'm looking forward to a long cold winter of early morning runs with 3 layers on the top and bottom. I've been enjoying the heck out of my new to me cycle trainer these last few weeks. My wife has been back in the gym m,w,and sat, so I've been staying at the house w/ kids and using the trainer to get a ride in. I think that will help this winter keep a base level of cycle fitness for May HIM. Time to hit the hey, the early bird gets the worm. |

It took a bit (like to mother loving years), but I finally got my 100 mile gorilla off my back. I have spent the last 8 days in guilt free non workout nirvana, but I woke up Saturday feeling the itch and caved today with biking to work. So I am currently without a goal race. Maybe pick something up in February, but I got a couple months to think about that. In the meantime I am up 20 lbs from where I was on December 31, 2012. The big 200lbs, on the nail. Yikes. I tell you, ultra running is not necessarily for the slight of stature. I got 30 some days until this wedding and I don't want to feel like busted can of biscuits in my favorite GQ suit. Clearly, don't matter how much you bike and run when you are wolfing down the subs and sucking back the tall boys. So breakfast sub is out. Gonna stick with the lunch sub on days I run. Beer, yes beer is out, I figure that is good for a minimum of 5,000 calories a week. No more cream and sugar in the coffee. Just no more. So the plan is run easy 4 days a week. Run the stairs once a week. Maybe a long run on the weekend, but maybe not. Bike to work 3 times a week while weather allows. Foam rolling 5 nights a week. Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed I was determined to get in that 4 mile run today. Unfortunately, my ITB won. It continued to be sore this morning. Before heading out, I tried warming up and stretching to see if that would help. It didn't seem to but I went out anyway. I stopped after a 1/4 mile and really tried to stretch both my ITB and my hamstring right below the glut. I ran for another 1/4 mile and I was still in pain. about a 5 or 6 on a scale of 1-10. I thought about running the distance anyway but I know my real goal is to finish IMMT so I stopped and walked home. I'm icing it now - both the outside of my left knee where the scar tissue rubs against the ITB as well as my hip. Once I'm done with that - I will ice my hamstrings. I am determined to get over this hump. It will happen. As Alex says - its time to suck it up Nancy. I'll just go even slower next time. Prost! |

I don't know the knee pain, but can attest that the hip pain is no fun. That put me out most of this year. I only hope your relief comes sooner than later so you can get over this hump and begin your journey. What about the aqua jog you used so effectively in years past? would that help to do in place of runs while your on the mend. With me personally, when I've been injured, not just a little pain, but really injured, I almost have to rest that area for extended period, otherwise I just keep injuring or even make it worse. I'd think that the aqua jog just might help you continue some level of run fitness with little impact so that you can rehab and rest injury. Just my .02. |

Veteran 706 Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Getting ready for another 20-mile training run today. Hit my LBS up today as well - Specialized Shiv Expert, half-off, so $2,200 with full dura-ace, but only 10 sped. Hrumph. I really want a Di2 setup, so I had to pass, sadly. I'm also leaning more towards a Quintana Roo CD01 or Felt B2, since they are tuned more toward stable handling as opposed to the Shiv or Trek Speed Concept, which are more nimble, which in my hands, becomes twitchy. /sigh . . . bikes are so pretty and sooooo expensive. |

Veteran 706 Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed My second 20-miler is now officially in the books. There's a group that does them near the marathons in an organized fashion, so I ran with them. About 800 people showed up, and it was a great time. I finished last week's 20 pretty strong, but with an 11:15 avg pace, so I jumped in with the 10:30 pace group; I figured it if was too much, it'd be easy enough to fall back. End result: 20.23 miles @ 3:28:09, for an average pace of 10:21, with the last four miles around 9:40 pace; so I shaved about 15 minutes off my time. The last few miles from both are actually pretty interesting - today, an 8:30 finish for the last mile was simply not in the cards - so the pacing felt pretty good. I'm going to mull over it some more, but I'm thinking a 10:30 target pace for the marathon is a noble goal - so perhaps a 4:30 finish. The taper should help a bit too, especially given that I've ran 92 miles in the last two weeks. I'm still shocked by that figure - I still remember the look my gym teacher in high school, as he scowled at me for walking the mile run in our fitness tests. The ham sub supposedly has the least amount of fat. I figured, I am biking to work, running at lunch, and biking home. Whatever, those sauces, not good. It is a strange feeling. But also a very welcome feeling. I have spent a 5 years on this board constantly chasing one dream or another. First the IM, which took one year. Then there was the 100k, which took one year. Then there was the 4 hour marathon which took 2 long years to figure out. Then the 100 miler, which again, took 2 long years. I remember last year working up to the 100 miler and feeling just cooked, looking forward to it being over with so I could just chill. Then I didn't make it and had to worry about it for another year. I don't regret any of it but I am glad it is all over. For now. For the last week, things went well. I did have cream in my coffee twice and a couple of donuts and some chocolates. But had a very reasonable breakfast all days and stayed away from the brewskis. Haven't seen 200 lbs on the scale this week so I call that victory. On tap for tomorrow is the long run, easy 2 hours, no stress, no expectations. Going to be sweet. |

I thought about walking and taking a coors light penalty, but quickly put it behind. Lost 1.9 lbs. this week. I stopped tracking food about Wednesday, but did manage to keep Beer consumption to under a 6pk. Next weeks goal is to continue to keep it under 6, and track food for entire week. would like to see a 2+ lb. loss next week, but I'll have to get better at hitting my target and quit having honey nut cherios at 9:00pm. No cereal this week! After this week, I've almost hit 100 miles for the month. Getting back on the ladder is fun. Love the early morning fall runs! Have a great week BDAS! |

I just want to thank you all for your support and the warm coors light penalty I kept in mind the entire race. Time to celebrate and enjoy some tasty brews at the Depeche Mode concert, race report coming soon! Cheers! |
