I also had a question.  I am doing the Seattle to Portland bike ride July 9th $ 10th.  I just got an email from a site called Zozi.com offering a $37 half marathon. It's the week AFTER the bike ride.  Think I could do it?   Just seems like too good a price to pass up. It's 51% off and there's champagne and chocolate involved at the end too.

You've got enough time to train for the 2-day ride and the half-marathon mid-summer.

What would you consider the risks?  Assuming this is an organized ride and not a race, you shouldn't have a lot of pressure to go fast and trash your legs on the ride.  The risk of crashing (low, but not zero) or sunburn (low, even with sunscreen) taking you out of the marathon isn't high and the entry cost pretty low, so probably worth taking.  (I'd signed up for IMCdA and Steelhead in 2009.  The crash at CdA took me out of Steelhead...

I did a 30-mile trail run 7 hours after running a marathon, so I'm not going to weigh in on whether it'd be a smart decision or not.

It's a 2 day leisurely ride, completely organized and I have a support group following me (aka Hubby in our van. lol)  I will be taking my sweet assed time and it's not terribly hilly either, by the time the event comes around I'll have done 2 centuries. I'm just worried my legs will be a bit fried.  It's just because I cannot pass up on a good deal, but I won't sign up for it if I'm not able to go for it.

Is it Centuries or Century's?

ricmachado - 2011-02-17 2:21 PM I don't have a place to swim, and cannot afford one right now, so what is a good substitute for the swim workouts on the training plans? I started to use the elliptical at the gym instead of swim, is this a good idea o should I increase bike ad run time instead? or even use the schedule time as weight training?
I'm only doing one duathlon and a couple of runs this year, and maybe a marathon in Nov.

It sounds like since you are doing duathlons and running events this season imo you could skip the swimming for now.  However like McFuzz said the sooner you get in the water and get comfortable the better. I am not currently swimming much but I have a competive background in it and am trying to use that time to get better at the bike and run.  Unless you really like the elliptical, I would switch it to either bike, run or stength training - which will yield better results in your races.

I don't really like the elliptical, but it is what the wife likes and I usually do it when she goes to the gym with me.
I "can" swim, but never learned or had classes so I'm sure it can be improved with some lessons and some water time.
Maybe for next year I'll join YMCA to use their pool, but this year it was out of question ($$).

Hello all!  Boy my day off couldn't have come at a better time!  Yesterday after school my youngest daughter Olivia, 6, got her finger caught in a classroom door and almost severed the tip.  It happened just as a big storm was hitting town.  We just have a clinic here--took her there first, they took one look and said 'take her in right now'.  Well, 'in' is Salt Lake City 120 miles east of us.  We took off and battled blizzard conditions and high winds (saw two semis that got blown over).  Long story short...made it in safely to Primary Children's Hospital.  Liv ended up with 8 stitches to keep the tip and we finally got back home around 3:00am.  Needless to say Liv and I took the day off from school today.  She's a trooper--can't wait to go to school tomorrow and show off her splint, although she's bummed that "I guess I can't play basketball with the boys for a while."  So glad it turned out as well as it did.  I'm guessing this may be the first of many trips to the ER with my little tornado!

Question,

This week I had to travel to NY for work -- wow it is cold out there.   Due to the traveling and work, I did not have a chance to train or do anything active for four days.  My question is this: when you miss an extended period of training time and you are following a program that gets progressively harder, is it better to continue with the workouts as if you have not missed a day, or should I go back and do the workouts I missed?

Trust me unless your a natural "can swim" is not really swimming.  I was self taught, liked water but really did not like swimming.  Took lesson with the park district last month and oh my what a difference.  I still don't swim very well yet but I'm getting there with practice and I'm actually starting to LIKE swimming.  Learning how to breathe and move your arms is HUGE.  Understand the no access to the pool thing.  Now that lessons are done, I only have access to swimming on Sunday's at the local High School.  Gyms with pools are way too expensive here also.

As long as your not signed up for a tri don't sweat the swimming.  Cross that bridge when you get there.

Thank you everyone for the thanks in regard to my hubby.  He's on his way home and is at his second stop and it looks like he's stuck there for about a week but he's out of Afghanistan anyway so it's fine with me.

Nate - Sorry about the promotion, guess we just all have to focus on the positives when things like that happen.  Awesome on keeping up the training!

Steph - Yeah my 'stroke thought' right now is 'I hope I can make it to the end of the pool' so I'm thinking I should change that to something a bit more positive. : )

Ree - I did try the hip rocking and it makes a world of difference in keeping my body up in the water...I mean huge!!  Not sure if I'm swimming any faster but it is definitely easier which means I can go farther!

Training today was a 40min swim.  It went well and I did 2x200 freestyle with no stopping other than the extra few breathes I get at the wall when I'm turning around.  That's huge for me because before the furthest I could go was 100 and that would kill me.  So thanks all around for the swimming advice, it appears to be working! : )  I am soooo excited about this!  Now I just need to get a road bike instead of a mountain bike and I'll be kicking some serious butt at triathlons!  Ok, not really but a new bike is on the wish list!

I'm not walking 13 miles. What I mean is, I walk a lot. I don't get in the car like most people. So... should I hop in the car to do some errands. I guess if I have to ask...

Swimming simulation - i've had a number of trainers tell me the closest thing is the erg or rowing machine. Concept2 has some graphics on how to row properly, so if your gym has a rowing machine that might be good in place of swimming, at least for a while.

sj - i always thought i was such a good swimmer...oh boy! sometimes i look up thinking i'm almost at the edge and OOPS! I've got another 10 yards! gotta get some of that anti-fog stuff. )

the coin thing is working out though. ours is an infinity pool so there's no dry edge. I take a bunch of pennies and i move them from one square of tile to the next to count 100 yard increments. Otherwise I forget how much I've done!

Sitting here icing the quad.   Not sure I should have run this morning. I was doing so well before this $@#! injury.  This is so frustrating for me.  I don't even know how it happened.  Seeing the chiropractor on Sat so hoping will get some more info.  If he tells me to stop running, I'll listen (even though that will be hard).  I'm very impatient about these things, but I guess I need to look at the big picture.  Down time now will be better in the long run (ha ha).

Did you run it at night? Where you possibly not all there upstairs? WOW!

Um...yea, we started the marathon at 6PM (it was a prediction marathon, so we could start whenever we wanted after 6PM.  The winner is the last person to cross before midnight, but no watches, clocks, or running computers/pacing aids).  Finished at 11:17 (good for 3rd place as it turns out) and then started the ultra at 7AM.  There were two of us that ran both the marathon and ultra, so I wasn't the only whackjob.

x3 and that includes letting them go mentally.  As Robin said, you will probably feel better because you're more rested.  Resist the temptation to push harder during your next couple workouts to "make up" for the ones you missed.  Follow your plan.

ingleshteechur, you might appreciate this little bit of insanity,  my daughter (4yrs old) climbed up on my bathroom sink, got hold of some nail polish and proceeded to use it as eye shadow tonight. Big horrible mess. there was a moment where I  thought I was going to have to take her to the emergency room but I washed her eye out and shes ok. The nailpolish (silver) is stuck in her eyebrow, will probably be there for a couple of weeks.
