Regular 165 Morgan Hill, CA | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Wesley12 - 2012-02-23 11:11 AM Training is going much better this week. Work still sucks but as long as the training is good, I can live with the other. It was perfect outside this morning. Got a little brick when it was about 65 degrees. Going back for another Masters swim class this evening and then back to work for the rest of the night. I hope everyone else is having a good day. Glad the workouts are going better this week, Wesley. Your schedule sounds brutal. Gotta work to pay for the play, I guess. It hit about 77 here today. Too bad I didn't have a swim scheduled -- just a short bike ride. I'm going to try to squeeze in an OWS tomorrow morning and an easy run tomorrow night. Hope everybody else is having a good week! |

Nice workout Carla, if I read your link right your avg power for the total workout was a lot better than you have been talking about here in the past. Keep training like you are and your bike will become impressive! Kenj - Does it matter if I had to work REALLY hard to hold on to that Power/Gear/Cadence for 60 seconds? I barely made the interval. When I look at the numbers, the "Rest Interval" Power readings seem too high. I didn't pedal at all during the rest interval, so I shouldn't see Power readings smiliar to the "Work" Interval... :/ In any case... I'd like to believe that these efforts will translate into faster splits outside... ...for now I'm just doing the work... "As Written"... and hoping for a small miracle come race day. ~Carla Edited by CarlaLThompson 2012-02-24 1:51 AM |

I rearranged my lunch hour so that I could go and had first lesson yesterday. Coach is sort of the old school, college swim team type. It's a mixed bag of participants, mostly older women (yes I am including myself in that Demographic). Some of them did not want to get their hair wet. The coach watched me swim a lap and said that my arm position/catch and pull look great and he would not change anything (wow) but my kick was very inconsistent so we would be working on that. I learned to swim in 2008 and the instructor used Total Immersion practices. This did get me confident in the water but I hit a plateau and haven't progressed much. We really didn't kick at all, so I am kind of excited about the possibilities this class might open up. After 45 minutes of various kick drills, my legs are kind of feeling it today. Does he have you doing vertical kicking? My swim coaches love that, I am just hoping they missed the article in Triathlon last month where it was suggested to do weighted verticle kicking drills! Yikes, I would need scuba gear! Kicking is an under appreciated skill in triathlon circles except by folks that started as swimmers. It may not help you win a tri, but a bad kick, as I have proven, can certainly become a liability. I have managed to at least get mine to a point where I go forward instead of backwards doing the kicking drills! Good for you Anne in getting signed up for the lessons!! Adult swim lessons are definitely a good investment. I'm on my 3rd session at our Y, and I have gained so much more confidence and strength in my whole technique. It also gets me to the pool on a regular basis. |

Regular 231 Maryland | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED robingray_260 - 2012-02-21 12:19 PM Got back last night from a long weekend at a friends "cabin" 3 hour drive from Anchorage to the middle of nowhere and then an hour snowmachine ride to the lake that their house is on. The definite highlight was seeing the northern lights for the first time- amazing!!!! The green curtains that move through the sky are mind blowing. no training as I just "punted it all and drank" Update on the boot - only wore it for short periods over the weekend and stuck with wearing my new insoles. Unfortunately the heel did not respond well and I have quite a bit of pain in the foot (especially in the evening). Not sure what my future plans are- a large part of me just wants to give up on trying to heal it as it hasn't worked so far and just do what I want. Very tired of the "wait and see" approach. Robin, I'm sorry to hear that you're still having problems with your PF. I know it must be frustrating, since you are such an active person. |

Truth be told....3 years ago I went to a masters class and couldn't swim across the length of the pool!! LOL The coach there got my technique down. Signing up not only got me in the pool for class, but the environment got me swimming outside of class. I didn't want to embarass myself so I would go on my own during the week to practice. I signed up again a few weeks ago and it has gotten me out of the no swimming rut again!! |
