Nothing wrong with that. That way we get back in the game much sooner. Darren- sorry about the bike, Is that the new one you got on craigslist? Hope it's an easy fix an up and running in no time. Beter for sure! The pressure is much more now as this is the second time for this race...scared of doing worse then last year...I will be very disappointed if I don't improve this year, all things being equal! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Update. I bit the bullet. I have new clip on pedals and shoes for cycling. I have a new rear wheel, cassette and chain, brake adjustments, re doing the shift cables, adjusting the shift tensions, genetal tune up to happen on Thursday the 19th. I got them to install the pedals, (they were extremely busy) so that I could let them know how they ride on the 19th. The whole family is going on a ride here in about 30 minutes so I can try everything out. My wife says it's "no fair that I have a nice road bike, and she's stuck on an old mountain bike." I tend to agree with her on this point except the one about me having a "nice" road bike. More to come about this one, I'm sure. I would love to throw down and get her and I our dream cycles, when we win the lottery. Thank You all for the advice/wisdom. I only hope this is the last $ put into said bike, It sounds like I may have to save a few $'s for some new ones. I would imagine that while your wife might be less than pleased with you now, you will be thanking your lucky stars to have made these upgrades by the mid-way point of your HIM ride. Fact is - you've had some really bad luck with your wheels and everyone needs a little something something to help them reach their goals. How did the family ride go? If your wife still pis*sed? |

I only hope this is the last $ put into said bike, It sounds like I may have to save a few $'s for some new ones. Ouch! That was a costly little stop at the LBS! My wife would not have been happy with that stop.... Your right. I have borrowed $1000 for each of the last 2 semesters of college extra. My intention was to get a new to me road bike/tri bike with first installment in fall and home improvements with 2nd. My wife has been making statements that lead me to believe she wants a bike. She asks yesterday what a crossover bike is, and I have great enjoyment talking bikes with her. I'm thinking that part of that first 1000 may go to purchasing her a new road bike/crossover. I'll keep exhisting bike, then when we ride, she won't feel left out pedaling next to me on a 50$ used mountain bike she currently rides. Then the next $1000 the following spring can go to a bike upgrade for me. The cool thing is that the pedals and shoes I purchased can go to my next bike. The upgrades to this one can be advertised for sale on craigslist, or I could keep this one to use as a trainer, and keep the other one fresh for races. Plus, my wife's getting on board. She detested the idea of doing a tri months ago, but she has been riding and running more these last few months than ever in her life. She's already signed up for a 4.3 mile race in July we're doing together, and she can regularly ride 10-15 miles on bike for excercise. I think it surprised her when I quietly mentioned that she was already doing the distances of a sprint triathlon regularly in her normal workouts. We have 2 all woman tri's in the area, and she has a good friend that's done both of them. I think she's in. The family ride went well (as well as a ride witha 2 and 7 year old can go.) The 2 year old's first time riding in the seat w/ mom. it's a new style where the seat goes up front on the tube from seat to handlebars, she loved it. The seven year old is on a new bike with training wheels. we just need to get her going more, she has very low confidence right now (lot's of tears). I ended up falling with my first time clipping in. I forgot I was clipped. fortunately it was in the neighbors lawn as I was next to the curb. Just fell, right in front of whole family and neighboors. Good times. Getting first training ride in today. 30 miles with new shoes and pedals. I'm excited! Edited by kevinbe 2012-07-10 12:29 PM |

It was incredible. We did a 40 mile an hour bike ride on a bike path along the coast of Little Traverse Bay. If you haven't seen Lake Michigan with your own eyes - there is no prettier shade of blue in the world than along the coast of michigan. At the turn around, we stopped and grabbed some coffee and a scone at a tiny coffee shop. I've never stopped on a ride to eat before and it was awesome! The food was incredible. It turns out that the guy who made the scones was also on a ride and had stopped there to eat and as we were raving about how good the blue berry scones were - he leaned in and said, "well, thanks son. Not only did I bake them but I grew the corn and the blueberries on my farm" So cool. Have never aqua jogged so i can`t comment. ¸ I say tie a rope around your waist and attach 6pack. Drag it behind while swimming. Swim until beer is cold then head for shore for refreshments! Warm lake=more comfortable swim but longer to cool off beer vs cold lake=freeze your nuts off swimming but shorter swim to cool off beer! OK - Wasn't a huge fan of the aqua jog. I've done it in the past but not with ribs that hurt. Not even sure it helped with the tired muscles. I did however burn enough calories to enjoy some guilt free cherry pie. 700 calories a slice (I had a little less than a full slice just for the record) makes for a damn fine tasting piece of pie. Love the idea of the beer can on a rope... too bad the lake is not cold enough to make that happen. In regards to the ribs - I've come to the realization that I've either pulled a muscle (likely) or broken a rib (not as likely). I went for a swim lesson with my wife this morning and could only manage about 12 lengths of the pool. Really gonna have to rest it if I hope to get the dam^ thing to heal. What makes it tough is that I haven't had a really good night's sleep since I did it... maybe drinking more beer will help. When my wife gets back from her workout (she hired a personal trainer up her for $20 an hour - how cheap is that!!!), I'm gonna head out on the bike for hill repeats. I'm gonna go scout out the highest hill near our lake and see what happens. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() clip in pedals are the shizzz. I rode my 30 mile loop today. I rode 3 days ago in 1:44 at 17.5 mph. Today, with the first ride with the new shoe and pedal setup, I got 1:38 with a 18.5 mph pace. I felt way faster and could really feel the up peddle motion on the backside of the pedal stroke. Thank you all for the advice and "push" to upgrade to the 21st century technology. I'm thinking carbon fiber fork and race wheels next.

If it ever gets too hot - feel free to come visit Northern Michigan. It's 75 and sunny today! (Bragging now but will be hating life later in the week when it gets close to 90) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SportzVision - 2012-07-10 5:30 PM trained in the 102 heat on Sunday...rode my bike 18 miles and swam 1200 at the half way point. Thought I hydrated enough but no such luck...my feet and calves cramped so bad in the pool! When I got home I had a Spaten Octoberfest...just because it tasted like Lowenbrau from my younger days! Sounds like a mother of a workout. I used to do that quite a bit when I was IM training. I would ride 25k to the pool then go for a swim, then maybe a run at lunch, then ride home. Not sure if hydration is the thing with the cramps in the legs though, may be more of an electrolyte problem. Regardless, you sure ended things right. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() thor67 - 2012-07-11 8:18 AM This heat is killing me. Last night ended up with a taper of a couple of cold beers and BBQ. Got the Big Daddy combo 3, smoked turkey, pulled pork and my fave, brisket! I managed to get up and on the spin bike this morning. Going to try hit the pool at lunch for a quick swim. God I know. I get home after riding home for work and all I can think of is drinking and eating. I took a day off yesterday and went to the zoo with the kids. Pushing a stroller and carrying the 3 year old on my shoulders. That, in 33C heat, is a bit of a workout. I was so beat when I got home I drank 2 litres of lemonade on my own (that is .5 cup of sugar), brutal. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() oh the bike. .....right. I really don't want to talk about it. $250 bucks to fix it. That is damn near what it cost. Shoulda had it tuned before I started riding it. Guess it was the first time I had it in the granny gear and it just was out of alignment and bang the derailluer goes into the spokes. Spokes are mostly fine, it is the derrailuer that is right messed up. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() After weighing in the 180's for most of last week, I managed 3 days of staying healthy and was back down to 175.5 this morning. At this point, I cannot afford Good swim today. I had to flip/flop swim and run workout as I'm pretty well cooked after yesterdays heat-a-thon. I took the 100 yard repeat workout in the pool and lessened the intensity, but shortened the rests. It worked pretty good as I kept all of them at 1:56-2:00/100 except the last one. I will run 11.5 miler tomorrow in 95 degree heat. This should make for some good times. I may have to really go inside myself to finish. Edited by kevinbe 2012-07-11 1:09 PM |

This is awesome. My wife takes a class at the Y led by a personal trainer ala biggest loser style, where they do like 10 excersises in 3 circuits in an hour. It cost 5$ a class. she does it 2-3 times a weak. She's becoming such a bad a$$, and actually loves getting up at 5 am and going in and "getting the crap kicked out of her" as she puts it. Hope your wife has similar experience and enjoys her time. money well spent. rest those ribs up. maybe stop swimming for a week or so and test them out after an extended break? My wife needs to come and join your wife's gym... She hated her trainer. It got off to a bad start when the guy - who she described as Hans - handed her a 60 pound barbell. When she said there was no way she could lift it, he handed her a 50 pounder... not a great start. I agree with you about the need for rest. I feel over today on my ride (I jinxed myself) and thought that I had really broken them. Just making it home was tough. I'm gonna keep biking but I will skip swims for the next few days and see how it goes. I had a good hill workout today. Next week I'm going to need to up the ante and do hill repeats to build up the elevation (today's hill workout was 600 feet of elevation, which is 1/7 of the gain I'll do during the century). Off to enjoy some smores and the all star game. Weigh in tomorrow... Gonna have to be good! My wife will do train her for free...well other then a plane tickets for our family, food, lodging and, oh yeah beer, unlimited. As a bonus you would have me as a training partner...well beer drinking for sure! Unlimited Molson... totally worth it! When you come out - you can pay me the $20 for winning the bet. 3 pounds to go! |

I weighed in today at 181.5 - my first loss since I ate an entire cow 2 weeks ago. I've got 2.5 pounds to go... With my fraternity brother here this week, a loss next week will be a miracle! Kevin - good job on the weight loss. Just think off all that beer you'll be able to buy when you win your part of the bet! My ribs are killing me. I sat down last night to watch the all star game and it hurt so bad I let out a yelp. Not good! So I took today off. It's a pisser since I will probably miss out on a swim lesson tomorrow morning with my wife. Oh well - off to drink a beer. PS - I'm gonna buy the total immursion DVD today - so I got that going for me! |

You just exerted yourself big time, (OLY), and hate to say it, you probably made it worse. 2 suggestions: 1) Ace bandage and Ice. 20 0n, 20 0ff x2 each night while on couch drinking beer. The beer will be a pain relief, no joke, also take Ibuprofen. They say 3 every 6 hours, or 4 every 8 hours, but I've been known to pop an extra or take within 4 hours. 2) See a doctor to find out if you have a cracked rib. They can't do much except tell you you have a cracked rib and to stay off of it. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well first race of the season this weekend. My son races Saturday and I go Sunday(Oly). All week predicting sunny and 31Celsius(87F) and now they are predicting cooler and showers. I can live with the cooler but not so happy about the showers, unless they hold off for the run. A lot of hills on both the run and the bike. Last year I had major cramping in the quads on the run. Had to walk up some of the hills. Hope to avoid that this year. After that we are off to Penticon for the rest of the week for holidays. Question: How far/long do you warm up for your swim? Basically in the past I tend to just get wet and get moving for warmup. I find my arms feel fatigued after about 200 meters but feel better as the race goes on... |

Not sure about the warm up but the fact that you're hurt at the start might point to a need for more warm up time. I would warm up for as long as you warm up in the pool. |
