mehaner - 2012-09-05 11:18 AM car diagnosis:  OIL FILTER FELL OFF.  mother effer, i hope that car isn't completely screwed.

Yikes.  Did engine sieze up?  If so.  It's a gonner.

it likely happened when i left my house this morning, i heard the clunk of something hitting the undercarriage, assumed it was just some crap in the road.  i drove to work - 15 minutes - car was shaky and noisy and "surge-y" - like it stopped running for a second when i was moving faster/steadier, oil light came on, stalled once when downshifting to make a turn.  After about 3 hours, I drove it across the street to the nearest service shop - 2 minutes.  No issues besides shaky, noisy.  Oil light still on.  Grand total of 10 miles, maybe?

If it was still running you should be ok. It might have cause some wear but that won't be present for a while. If you have an oil pressure gauge in your cluster watch and see if it's lower than normal. I have seen cars that have done this before and they were fine after.

230K baby.  i never want to get rid of her, but i also can not justify rebuilding the engine in a 10 year old car...

Rebuilding the engine will cost what sales tax on a new car is...Maybe not as bad as you think.

bradleyd3 - 2012-09-05 12:16 PM Why do they call underwear for guys....underwear. But for the ladies, it's intimates?

Should we call them undergarments?  Panties .. as they are small pants .. sort of.

Undergarments sounds like what an 85 year old lady would call them. And calling them basically "small pants" is not sexy..... Hey honey.....I've got my small pants on for you tonight....the purple ones....rwarrrr.

I don't know ... I'm pretty turned on right now.

What caused this: A) Purple Small Pants or B) Rwarrr

I think it is your avi with the little blue condom on your head.

And my tatted up arm with bulging triceps?

Because they don't leave skid marks all over it like men do.

Pittzee, it's good to know I can always count on you for company on the low road.

Is there even a road that goes that low?

There indeed is a highway to hell. I am it's toll keeper.

I thought you were The Ferryman.

Charon went out of business when Moses figured out how to part the seas or so I heard.

Clever allusion.

TAN is full of smart people and engineers so I will ask a question.

What creates oil pressure in an engine?

What creates oil pressure in an engine?

Is this a setup?

There is an oil pump...  My ME professor had one on his desk.  It was cool to play with when I was getting lectured about my poor behaviour and worse grades.

Yep it is

An oil pump creats oil flow but not oil pressure.

Jackarse - just waited for someone to step into the trap didn't you?

It's a bit simantics though.   A pump does not create pressure, it only creates flow. Pressure is a measurement of the resistance to flow.  If you have a pressure guage on the intake line and the discharge line, the discharge will read much higher.  But it is the RESISTANCE to the pump's flow that is read on a pressure gauge attached to the discharge line, not pressure itself.

Same thing that causes pressure everywhere. How much oil there is vs. how much space there is for it to be in/on. The rest of the space is either taken up by something (which affects pressure as it will create its own) or nothing (a vacuum, which can alter the how much space the oil does or doesn't take up and move it to different places).
