10 mile race today.  I knew I had gone out "too fast" but  I figured I could always slow down when I started to fade.  As it turns out, I faded, but not that much.  The result: new PR for 10 miles . . . 1hr:19min:07sec!  Not bad for a guy getting near 40.  If you asked me what the difference is. . . it has to be nutrition and mixing up my workouts with core training and the bike (I did 13.5 on the bike the day before the race.  I'm really looking forward to some nice weather now to get out there and do more.

Tim and Laura,
Youse guys are still doing the Ocean Drive Marathon next Sunday, yes?   One week away -- are you starting to feel the excitement of race day?    Checking the long range weather forecasts and thinking about what to wear...   Nothing like a little stretch of the legs on a Sunday Spring morning to make you feel alive.   Are you ready????

Hey Frank...Yup we are still racing next wknd, although I opted down to the 10 mile race. Laura is still doing the marathon though. I didn't have enough training time (and fortitude in the winter) to train properly for a full marathon.

Weather is looking iffy thought....cooler temps and possibly rain. I don't mind the either by themself by together it can create tough conditions.

What is a serpentine course?  I think I understand it where you swim in every lane.  So if there are 15 lanes you swim up lane 1, then swim back in lane 2, and so on.  So that you are swimming in a pattern that is snake-like.

I think you got it perfectly! The only other variation I can think of is you swim up and back in lane 1, and then up and back in lane 2, etc. It would depend on the size of the pool and the length of the swim.

I've done races both of these ways. There was a lot more body contact where you go up and down in the same lane, because it was difficult to pass. I understand pool swims are generally quite congested though.

How is everyone doing?  It's been a while!  What is everyone getting ready for?  How's the training?  How's the weather, has it been good for training?

Out here in Colorado, I'm getting ready for a 10k in about 3 weeks.  It's a typical spring which means nice weather one day and then 30mph winds the next!  Doesn't inspire me to get on the bike too much.  I'll be in San Antonio next week so I'm hoping the weather is a little nicer there and I can get in a few runs!  Hope everyone's training is going well!

Laura and I are doing well. We raced last wknd...she had a great race and qualified for Boston with a 3:40:21. I ran the 10-miler and set a PR of 1:09:33 so I was happy as well.

Weather has been great the last 5 days or so in PA. We did a nice/hilly 40 mile ride yesterday with of our close friends...it was great to not have to wear any long-sleeves or jackets.

Hope everyone us is doing well gearing up for those early season races!!

Hey, sorry for being MIA but I was in Cape Canaveral doing some testing for several weeks and just couldn't find the time to communicate.

Anyway, anybody doing the Lake Anna, VA sprint next month?

5k race out at CSU-Pueblo this morning.  The sun came out just before the race started.  I felt great this morning and wound up running it in 21:34.  Took 9th overall and won my age group!

Greetings,

I hope everyone is doing well.  The weather here in Colorado has finally warmed up and with the passing of the Memorial Day Weekend, the swimming pools are now open! I plan on trying to swim as much as possible during the next 2 months (possibly 5-6/ week) if my schedule allows.  Since I haven't been swimming in ages, I would appreciate any and all suggestions in terms of where to begin.  I figure I will spend the first 1 1/2 to 2 weeks building up a base so that I feel comfortable swimming 1000 yards or so, but I really don't know what else I should be doing? Ideas anyone?  Thanks in advance!
